25.01.2022 The remarkable Aboriginal cultural heritage of the Grampians continues to be revealed, with recent rediscoveries of ancient cultural material in the national park. Known as Gariwerd to Traditional Owners, the Grampians is home to precious native plants, animals and ancient cultural heritage, including the richest concentration of rock art in Victoria. Archaeological excavations of Aboriginal sites in the park indicate occupation sites that are around 22,000 years old. We h...ave a legislated responsibility to protect these cultural rediscoveries, so will be putting in place protection zones and signage at two locations so that people dont inadvertently enter the areas and cause harm. The protection zones cover areas used for rock climbing and bushwalking, while other sections currently remain open to the public. A long-term approach to protecting these places will be determined by a new management plan, a draft of which is expected to be released for further public consultation later this year. The Grampians landscape is embedded with remarkable natural and cultural values, much of which is still being identified. Its a privilege to partner with Traditional Owners as the Gariwerd cultural landscape is further revealed and to ensure these special places and stories are carried forward to be shared for generations to come. https://fal.cn/39J88

01.01.2022 Demand for firewood is higher than ever. When firewood is illegally collected from parks and reserves it destroys trees and hollow logs that provide essential and safe homes for birds, reptiles, native mammals like possums, gliders and bats. Lets protect Victorias environment by sourcing firewood from a reputable supplier, or from a legal and designated firewood collection area. If you happen to see any illegal firewood activities, you can report it to Parks Victoria on 13 1963 or the Office of the Conservation Regulator on 136 186.
