10.01.2022 As today marks the first day of Summer, we look back on #60Mins' 2005 'Sunburnt Country' - a story that could save your life. These three everyday Aussies belie...ved they were invincible, but then got the terrible news - skin cancer. 12 years on, we encourage all of our viewers to revisit their heartbreaking stories as a reminder to slip, slop, slap. | Full story: bit.ly/2hilHfF See more

05.01.2022 I was in two minds whether I would post about my situation 6 months ago. Now I’m considering it a community announcement. September 2019 I noticed a strange pi...nkish spot on top of my right ear. As I had a BCC cut out of my back in 2018 I thought let’s move on this one quickly. 11 days later after GP (who said it’s probably nothing) referral, dermo and biopsy results confirming it was a melanoma, I was in surgery. The spot was deep enough to warrant a biopsy of the nearest lymph node, those results confirmed that the melanoma had spread and there was a 2mm deposit in the lymph node. First two photos below are prior and after the September surgery. Treatment from that point was full body scans every 6 months and local ultrasounds every 3 months. Full body scan and December ultrasound scan are all clear. Happy days! 1 week prior to the March ultrasound I feel a lump in my neck just below the jaw line and so I brought the ultrasound forward. That lead to a needle biopsy of that lump and confirmation of more melanoma present. Wednesday just gone I went into surgery again for a neck dissection where several lymph nodes have been removed along with the dodgy one. Pathology results on all that will confirm my ongoing treatment path. Final photo is me at the moment. I am well and doing ok!! MY MESSAGE: Don’t let your skin checks slide! Any suspicious spots get them checked as a matter of urgency! If this prompts one person to find something early enough that they avoid the path I am on, I’m happy I shared. Also, kids use sun cream rain hail or shine and at night if the moon’s bright! Cheers, Rob. BTW. Feel free to share if you’d like to spread the message. ************************************* UPDATE 23 April. I am amazed at how far and wide this post has gone and has also had the unforeseen advantage of putting me in touch with several people going through the same process at different stages. So thank you to everyone who has shared. An update on progress: I received my first set of pathology results a few days ago. 19 lymph nodes were removed during the neck surgery and 2 came back positive for melanoma, so the one I could feel and one other. Not too bad a result. It means I probably won’t need radio therapy. I now have my referral to an oncologist and I will then find out what form further treatment may take. ****************************** UPDATE 25 May My final update to this post. This week I start systemic immunotherapy treatment to ensure this nasty disease doesn’t come back. I also have added a pic of what my neck looks like now. I’m very happy with how well it has healed in a bit over 6 weeks. Thanks again to all people who have shared and wished me well. *******************************
