25.01.2022 Do you want to work at Parliament on King? We’ve got a few shifts a week, mornings and weekends and we could really do with a hand. You’ll need to be a solid café all-rounder with an RSA, looking after the food, the coffee and the service.... But there’s more to it than that: as we slowly reopen from our Covid hiatus, we’re re-setting, lifting our food game, it’s a chance to reimagine what we can do, and how good we can be, so if you’re into food and coffee and want to make a mark, this could be fun. There’s also the other things, like making our refugee and asylum seeker team welcome each day as they turn up for work in the kitchen (here’s a photo of them in action from last year), or just turn up for company and conversation. Not to mention helping with our soup kitchen, welcoming our guests and other happy things. You can make someone’s day, every day. If you’re interested, get in touch, you can reach Ravi on 0414 235 3125, or if you know someone who could be perfect, please spread the word. We’re also open on Saturday and Sunday, so if you want to come and check it out before you call, you’d be welcome. Hope to see you in the café. Contact: Call Ravi on 0414 235 325, email [email protected] or message our Facebook page. Where: Parliament on King, 632 King St, the ‘Paris’ end of King on the thoughtful side of the road, just up from the marvel that is St Peters Station.

23.01.2022 Merry everything and happy everything always to you from all of us @parliamentonking Miao makes Marvelous from gingerbread, and it’s extraordinary, as is customary at festivus. Open Saturday and Sunday then we’re closed until the end of the first week of January. I know, it’s been a strange time, stay safe. #parliamentonking

23.01.2022 ‘What should I drink during the during the mayhem that is unfolding?’ Good question, we’ve been experimenting, we are afrer all, dedicated professionals - and have good news for you: cocktails. Cocktails go perfectly with dystopia; it’s a proven fact, maybe even science. You should come in on Saturday and Sunday and conduct the experiment for yourself. Or on yourself.... Or on someone you love, or just by yourself, sitting in a tranquil pool of sunshine like a Zen master. Or with a Zen master and cake. Have cake too, or a snack, we’re all about RSA here, that and sanitising, and having you 1.5 meters from the nearest Zen master or anyone for that matter. Except puppies, so if you’re one of the people who walk here with your puppy, nothing has changed. Crazy times. Here’s a picture of one of Pauls photogenic cocktails, he took it himself. He’s even decorated with coffee beans because we’re doing coffee (and cold brew) cocktails how adorable is this photo, look at those little beans! We’re open all day Saturday, until the soup kitchen kicks in, and on Sunday until we get tired. See you here. X

22.01.2022 Miao’s gingerbread house, in the middle of the woods, made with love. These are strange days. Stay close, even when apart. Wishing you happy everything always, from all of us @parliamentonking

15.01.2022 We’re open Saturday and Sunday! And Paul is making croque monsieur, and he’s French, so it’s the way he remembers it from back home, here’s a photo of what they look like, it’ not my best photo, I took it late, at night, when I was tired. I was more interested in sleeping that food. You know what that's like. I regret not doing a job that does Paul’s croqe monsieur justice. I’m sorry Paul.... Oh, and Della is baking again, and that’s always wonderful. And it’s raining, so there’s espresso martinis, of course. Come and watch the rain with us. And there’s the soup kitchen on Saturday night too. As always, made by our asylum seeker and refugee team, the soups will be free to anyone that is struggling, or ‘pay what you can afford’. We’ll also be offering fresh-frozen soups for people to take home, for $5 per soup. Best of all, we're also delivering free soups to those in need. With our soups, there’s always vegan option, with recipes form the countries of origin of our refugee and asylum seeker team from rich Burmese coconut cream, to hearty Persian vegetable, they’re just wonderful. When: Saturday, from 9 am until 5.30 pm and then soups, until they run out. Sunday, from 9am until 5.30 pm. Where: Parliament on King, 632 King St, the ‘Paris’ end of King on the thoughtful side of the road, just up from the marvel that is St Peters Station. They get paid, and food is made, and distributed for free, to those most in need.... And right now, more than ever, many of us are facing challenging times. We’ve been lucky, thanks to a community fund raising campaign, a donation by Vivcourt Trading, a grant from The City of Sydney, and the generous help and support of dedicated volunteers, we can keep our soup kitchen running for many, many months to come it also means we can make and donate more beautiful meals. So, if you know someone who needs some lovely meals, or if your community group, organisation, charity, or service can get some to those in need, please let us know, we may be able to help. Every meal is made and given with love by our skilled asylum seeker and refugee chefs (the photo is of our very lovely Bangladeshi chef Fatema). 14.01.2022 The soup we make and give away to those in need, is made the same way, to the same standard, using the same ingredients as the soup we make when we cater or do dinners. The only difference is that instead of being $12.50 a bowl in the café, we give them away for free and they are given as they are made, with love. If you’d like to try making one yourself, here’s one of our chefs recipes on SBS Food.... https://www.sbs.com.au//sallys-famous-lentil-and-vegetable Friday means we are cooking up a fresh batch of soups to deliver over the weekend. 11.01.2022 Wait for it.... and so it came to pass that a ziggurat of Churchill willow pattern plates, perched precariously above the chasm of the sink, came to meet their destiny at the merciless hands of gravity. Plates, no matter how adored, are just stuff. And this is the destiny of stuff. Paul’s fingers are treasures. And one was hurt. The prized ‘bird finger’. The nine surviving fingers went on to make more coffees. ... If you’re around this afternoon, come and see Paul’s fingers. Behold their magnificence. We love you Paul.

10.01.2022 Still life drawing; for this weekend’s Newtown Festival Backyard Party, at Parliamewnt on King. If you like to draw, you can join our Newtown Festival Backyard Party in the café. 02.01.2022 Just a brief update on how wonderful you are and some photographic evidence of your wonderfulness and a thank you. So, you may know the story: last Thursday we put out a call on the Parliament on King FB page to help stock the food bank at the House of Welcome who support many of our refugee and asylum seeker friends and some of Parliament’s own refugee and asylum seeker team. And what happened is enough to make you believe in miracles. A reminder of how beautiful our fr...iends and neighbours are. Of how lucky we are to be here and have each other as neighbours and friends. So, you can see in the photos, this is what kindness and decency can do. I look at it now, days later, and still feel that happy-warm hearted feeling you get when you see something kind happen in the world. We literally need a truck to get it all from Parliament on King to the H.O.W, we managed with a ute - behold the magnificence of this heavily laden ute! There was so much in the tray that we had to fill the back seats. Thank you, from all of us, and thanks for looking each other. One last thing to mention, that marvellous looking person in the photo is Marjorie (not the pirate/ lumberjack person I really need to shave that ISO beard) anyway Marjorie is from the Welcome Merchant, and it was her idea to put this together, like and follow their page, if you can. They make fabulous happen on the daily. We’re open on the weekend if you want to stop and say ‘hi’, if you were a donor, let us know, you are wonderful and we’d love to shout you a coffee. Where: Parliament on King, 632 King street 2043, the Erskineville end of King, just up from St Peters station. Contact: For more information, contact Ravi on 0414 235 325. Email, [email protected]

01.01.2022 This was sweet. a little movie about us! A while back a French journalist, living in Australia did a radio interview with us for the French media, she also shot some footage for her own side project, which became this little movie. I think it’s a sweet little introduction to what we all do thank you!

01.01.2022 We can make you happy from 7.30 in the morning. Actually, Sue can make you happy, she makes everyone happy, even birds love Sue. You could write songs about Sue - and everyone would want to sing along. People would play those songs at special events, like birthdays and weddings; that’s how lovely those songs would be. Yes, we’re now. Open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 7.30 am until 10.30 am, and Sue will be running the place; and there may be birds. See you in the morn...ing. 01.01.2022 Let me share something with you, that really changed things for me today. At times I feel quite alone with the problem of how to keep our soup kitchen running, there are sleepless nights, and days when the anxiety really gets in the way. Then there is today - and a stranger called Joan M Haslam, who I’ve never met, who lives in Victoria, who sent me a cheque for $100.... A bit about the soup kitchen first at Parliament on King, we’ve been paying members of our wonderful asylum seeker and refugee team to make food, (soups, noodles, rices), then donating them, for free, to those in need - international students, the homeless, people feeling the pain of these difficult times. anyway, back to Joan. I can get swept up in the anxiety of it all, and I forget that I’m not really alone; there are others, who care for the same problems of the world that trouble me. Sometimes you just need someone to make you see what’s always been there. So, thank you Joan, for the reminder, and your kindness, I was not having my best day until your letter arrived, I am very grateful. We’ll turn your $100 in to meals for those that need them, and work for those who are struggling . If you want to help, you can donate too if you’d like. I’d hoped that our social enterprise catering would have recovered, so that we could cover the cost of the soup kitchen from revenues, but given what’s been happening, I’m really not sure when this can happen. So, I might need a little help for a little while longer. I might do a Patron or something, if you have an idea of the best way to do this, let me know. Thank you to all the beautiful volunteers that keep this working, and all of you who have supported us, or donated, since this began; thank you for being part of this. If you want to get in touch, message me at Parliament on Kings FB page, call, or email [email protected] Ravi
