23.01.2022 Today is the first day of summer and many of us are looking forward to spending time at the beach. This Friday is #BoardiesDayWA which promotes Surf Life Saving WA volunteers who keep Western Australian beaches safe for swimmers. Our beach loving Building Services team at #WAParliament certainly didn’t mind getting into the swim of things to help support this important day. #firstdaysummer #PerthSummer

18.01.2022 #WAParliament is very excited to receive the final Parliamentary Research Program reports for 2020. As participating university students breathe a sigh of relief that the academic year is finally over, Parliament will be collecting their research reports for our participating members to review and potentially use for policies in the future. We thank our participating members, supervisors and most importantly, the students from all five universities: Edith Cowan University (ECU), Murdoch University, The University of Western Australia, The University of Notre Dame Australia and Curtin University for their hard work in writing valuable research material. We wish them all the best for the future. #MPs #UniversityStudents

16.01.2022 As our personal and professional lives go increasingly online, it’s important to be aware of the risks of cyber threats and be proactive about how we share and store information securely, particularly on International Computer Security Day. The Australian Cyber Security Centre has a range of resources and tools for businesses and individuals to help make Australia the most secure place to connect online. #ComputerSecurityDay

14.01.2022 #WAParliament is currently hosting an impressive three metre aluminium tree in the Forrest Foyer. Designed by artist, Stuart Bryce, ‘Pine Ali’ is a modern take on the traditional Christmas tree. Stuart drew inspiration from Norfolk pines which seafarers use to navigate to safe harbour. It is the hope of the artist that everyone who is able to travel to Western Australia for the festive season arrives safely. The tree will also serve as a focal point for staff donations to the annual Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. #SalvationArmyChristmasAppeal #ArtInWA

09.01.2022 #OnThisDay in 1879, Edith Cowan (nee Brown), the first woman member of Parliament in Australia, took a ‘hop, skip and a jump, down the aisle’. Eighteen at the time, she married James Cowan. He was Clerk of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1875 to 1879 when he left to become Registrar and Master of the Supreme Court. They were married in St George's Cathedral, Perth. The couple had five children, Dircksey Constance (1880), Norman Walkinshaw (1882), Hilda Edith (1883), Ida Marion (1885) and Helen May Burdett (1891). The Johnstone, O'Shannessy & Co studio photograph was thought to have been taken while Edith was on her honeymoon in Melbourne. 09.01.2022 #OnThisDay in 1915, Mr J.J. Holmes (seen in the photograph below) introduced an Anti-Shouting Bill which was passed by the Legislative Council on the same day without debate. However it was defeated in the Legislative Assembly on the casting vote of the Speaker. Anti-shouting was not about the volume of the debate in the chambers but the tradition of paying for a round of friends’ drinks at a pub or in the words of the bill: ‘An Act to prohibit the supply of liquor to any person on licensed premises except same is applied to and paid for by the person by whom it is consumed and for purposes connected therewith.’ Mr Millington MLC thought the bill would come under the ‘title of freak legislation’. #WAParliament #WAHistory #WALegislation
