25.01.2022 Last week we introduced you to Ava the Hahns Macaw....this week we want to introduce her brother, Tico, the Blue-Fronted Amazon! Tico also had a bit of a rough start, he had a deformity in his leg that meant he needed to be restrained to have splints placed on his leg at a young age to try and correct the issue. Unfortunately this meant that he developed some fear of hands / handling and men. ... When Lee arrived last Saturday for her session with Ava, Tico and their humans (Craig and Robyn). Tico would lunge, growl and spook if Craig approached him. Although he would step up for Craig, he would then continue growling and lunging in Craigs direction. In the video below you see Tico and Craig working together on some basic point to point training, the wonderful part of this video is that Tico is not engaging in any of the previously displayed behaviours! By allowing Tico to do things on his terms and in his own time we have quickly built up his confidence around Craig! It wont be long until Tico and Craig are best of friends! Thanks for sharing this progress video with us Robyn and Craig

Lee has some big plans for planting and perching the space over the next few months, so keep an eye out for some updates as she goes! ... Although we know this isnt possible for everyone, even small aviaries or flights are exceptionally beneficial for your parrots! Show us your bird projects below!
22.01.2022 A Thursday reminder to always remember to reward the basics! Theres an old idea in animal training that once a behaviour has been learned and is reliably on cue, we can cease rewarding that behaviour all together. But think about it like this; you take a risk by starting a new job, you dont totally have your head wrapped around your responsibilities but you put in the work and learn. You get better and better at what youre doing until, finally, you make employee of the mon...th! How good!? The CEO who has mentored you this whole time sits you down, gives you a pat on the back and says "Well done insert name here, youre doing an amazing job and because youre doing such an amazing job were going to stop paying you!" Thats what it can be like for our animals in training sometimes. So make sure you go back and reinforce foundation behaviours like your step up and step down from time to time, to keep the behaviour reinforcing and to keep chewing the clicker from becoming more interesting than training.

20.01.2022 Sprouting Yum Yums Sprouted seed is an extremely valuable addition to your birds diet. It has a better nutritional value than either dry or soaked seed. The chemical changes that happen with sprouted seed means that there is more available protein and less fat. Starch is converted to simple sugars, protein to amino acids and oil to fatty acids, all of which are a tasty, readily absorbable addition to your birds diet. Find the links in our comment section of how to sprout... and source good quality seeds. See more

16.01.2022 An important message from Jester.....
16.01.2022 Meet Rio the Blue-Fronted Amazon parrot! Rio is 18months old and has very recently joined his new family! Rio and his family had their first session last week with our Sydney Consultant, Rebecca, to ensure they were getting off on the right wing! Rio *loves* being on the shoulder so his family are working on building more positive associations with hands through recall training and pairing hands with safe, stable, positive places to be.... As a bonus hes super energetic so recall training up the hallway is a great way to expel some of that extra energy! Rio and family are progressing really well and we are looking forward to seeing how he goes over the next few months as he settles into his new home!
16.01.2022 Prepping some foraging enrichment examples from stuff around the house for my consults tomorrow. Ill be working with some beginner level parrots.... what were some of your learnings introducing foraging to your bird(s)? Any recommendations for what I should make up? Natalya
16.01.2022 How to Introduce a Foraging Tray..... continued! Previously we demonstrated a few methods to help familiarise our birds with their new tray from afar. This week, we are showing you how to continue developing their confidence and their skill interacting with it. ... Getting them to touch and enter the tray for their favourite items is pivotal before we add in more items such as substrate! How has your foraging tray training progressed so far? Show us in the comments below
15.01.2022 Bites hurt and make us think twice about putting our hands near our parrots again.. do you notice you feel worried about the possibility of a bite? Does this cause you to use jerky unsteady movements? As you know we are big on learning to read our parrots body language and detect early signals before a bite. However in some cases your parrot may have been practising biting for a long time and be quick to escalate. ... A simple way to help you and your parrot feel safer is to put some space between fingers and treats. Treats can be offered to your parrot on a spoon as youre moving through a behaviour modification program. Note: if your parrot seems fearful of an item like a spoon get in touch so we can help you find the best strategy for your specific situation
15.01.2022 Would you like to step up? Take the time to practise established behaviours like the step up Combine this with regular positive reinforcement & it will help maintain a pleasant association with your hands. ... Remember, when we ask for a step up? It needs to be met with an invitation to proceed from your bird... Watch to learn more
13.01.2022 Meet Cheeky the Indian Ringneck (aka Rose-ringed Parakeet)... As you can see Cheeky has a bit of a habit of plucking out his own feathers! He also has a bit of an issue with excessive vocalisations when his favourite human leaves the house. Our Brisbane consultant, Lee, met with Cheeky and his wonderful caretakers today to help them work through these issues. ... It would be an understatement to say Cheeky is a ladies man! Upon arrival Cheeky immediately set his mind to wooing Lee! We have made some changes to Cheekys diet, environment and enrichment protocols while adding some training exercises to help modify these behaviours! We are looking forward to seeing Cheekys progress over the coming months!
12.01.2022 Typically when we see you for a first consult, there is a learning history established between you and your parrot. Were going to teach you how to teach your parrot new skills and undo old ones. Were also teaching you new skills (AND undoing some old patterns!) Well give you tips on helping your parrot to effectively learn (many of these will apply to you also ) Youll hear us talk about breaking things down into baby steps for your parrot... making things achievable...... setting up for success... positive reinforcement... Well same rules might be relevant to you. Do you have good intentions when you agree to homework buuuuut realistically it might get left to the last minute? Do you find 1 homework activity more doable than 10? If we asked you to commit to 2mins daily training or 20mins which do you think youd manage to get it done? Does it help you to have written reports to refer back to? Would you feel better if you knew we would notice AND cheer you on for the little wins instead of making you feel bad because things didnt go to plan? Humans are learners too! Check in with us regularly and please feel free to let us know you have a busy schedule, youre managing an illness or you just had one of those weeks. Most importantly, check in regularly so we can remind you that youre not the worst parrot owner who ever lived youre actually awesome! Well trouble shoot when things go pear shaped (because success isnt usually a straight line). Let us help you see all the small wins youve made and keep you and your parrot moving forward
11.01.2022 Its Friday!! Time to take a bath , relax and prepare for the weekend!

10.01.2022 This is little Ava, the one-eyed Hahns Macaw! Isnt she just devine Like many parrots Ava is very attached to her humans, so much so that she wont step off their shoulder and likes to spend all of her time with them. In this video clip you see us working on teaching Ava to stay on the hand instead of climbing back up to the shoulder, we also worked on teaching her to voluntarily walk from the shoulder to the hand so that we can easily ask her to step off onto her play sta...nd or cage. Ava has also developed a habit of screaming when her humans are home if she isnt sitting on them, so today we also discussed strategies to help encourage Ava to be more independent! We are looking forward to updates on Avas progress over the next few weeks!
09.01.2022 What could be done better in this session? It would be too easy to get frustrated and blame Rosie for being stubborn/dumb/ insert any other negative adjective here... Consider Melbourne Consultant Natalyas body language and movements as well as the environment set up... How could Natalya and Rosie be set up for success? Comment your ideas below... Extra info: this is in the evening when Rosie would normally be settling for bed she can hear her mate separated in another room the environment is not super familiar to Rosie the clicker is a new sound

07.01.2022 BAFFLE CAGES Baffle cages are one of our all time favourite enrichment toys! We firmly believe every parrot owner should have one of these super versatile, long lasting toys in their cupboards (or if you are like us...a couple ). Aside from withstanding even the strongest of beaks they can be stuffed with a huge variety of different things..everything from fresh fruit and veggies, to paper, cardboard and pellets and even bark/leaves/gumnuts/pine cones, flowers and other f...un items!! What do you stuff in your baffle cages for your birds? Shows us in the comments
07.01.2022 Stationing!! Such a handy and versatile behaviour! We love this example of using stations to work with multiple parrots!
07.01.2022 Scammers and Fake Accounts It has been bought to our attention that scammers are now utilising our business to legitimise their profiles. They do this by linking their profiles to Parrot Life as employees. Unfortunately in a massive oversight Facebook does not provide any verification/checks or allow businesses to prevent this from occuring so we cannot remove these people. All of our staff have profiles which you can find on our website www.parrotlife.com.au - if they d...o not appear there, they do not work for Parrot Life. Additionally none of our staff breed, raise or sell parrots and would not be engaged in this kind of social media post. If you see someone posting like the below example please immediately report them to Facebook as a scam / fake page. Please do not purchase parrots over social media (Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram etc) as many posts on socials are scams!

05.01.2022 Its been a hot minute since we talked about the enrichment provided by browse! As always we would like to mention the amazing benefits of browse: it encourages natural behaviour, it provides opportunities to chew and learn, its cost effective, it provides screening and a sense of protection etc. Now that its Spring however most Australian natives are beginning to bud and bloom making it even more engaging for our birds!... So get out your secateurs and go for a walk! Your birds will thank you for it. Just ask Gimli the Corella!
04.01.2022 Does anybody else have a feather baby that is just too clever? Have you tried one of our foraging tumblers? These are good for your master foragers to use for their everyday pellet portion (with a hint of paper cat litter just to make it that little bit harder). Foraging and mental stimulation is just as Important as physical stimulation because when we have busy beaks they are less likely to perform unwanted and undesirable behaviours. ... The tumblers are a good addition to your bird aviary and good news is we have them in stock in our shop along with other great foraging and enrichment items - check them out at http://www.parrotlife.com.au/parrotlifeshop
04.01.2022 Spring time in Perth providing the best outdoor office for Cassie and Ebony.
04.01.2022 Positive interactions Meet Mr Mac the blue and gold macaw. Positive interactions are super important when it comes to our parrots and our visitors. This quick little video is an example of how a slow introduction and food is the best way to any parrots heart
03.01.2022 Hormonal Behaviour As Winter draws to a close and Spring begins to bloom we will begin to see behavioural changes in our birds. Hormonal change can be a difficult issue to navigate, with many behaviours being difficult to interpret and a lot of very conflicting information being spread online.... To do our part to help, we will be hosting a live Q&A on hormonal behaviour over on our Facebook group A Parrots Life - Parrot Behaviour Help on Sunday the 6th of September at 6pm QLD time! Feel free to join if you havent already, especially if, like in the video below, you have a cockatiel looking to build a nest in your armpit!
03.01.2022 Perth consultant Cassie is spending her day in the yard with the chooks. There is no better feeling than relaxing with your children (the feathered kind)
03.01.2022 Bathing Opportunities Bathing is important. We all know how rundown and grumpy we can start to feel when its been too long between scrubs and believe it or not our birds can feel the same way! At Parrot Life we always like to look at behaviour as a complete picture and a huge part of that picture is a birds general well-being; is a birds diet affecting its demeanour, does a bird have enough agency in its environment to make meaningful choices, does the bird have acces...s to bathing? Does the bird make the choice to bathe? For many birds, providing a large bowl of water in their environment will be enough to encourage them to bathe but for some we need to get more creative and think about species specific behaviour! As a Tropical Parrot, Eclectus Parrots are more likely to engage in bathing if they feel the sensation of water falling on their feathers (like the rain) so misting them with water or gradually taking them into the shower are great options! Have you ever noticed how many cockatoos and galahs you see when its raining? This led me to take my galah, who never bathed, out into the rain on a harness and she absolutely loves it! I get absolutely soaked too but its great fun! And of course in the case of our little budgie here, a light drip from the tap can be all it takes. So remember, our birds need to bathe, so get creative and have fun with encouraging them to do so! Patrick - Sydney Consultant
01.01.2022 Could this be a good or a bad idea teaching Joey the little corella to ring a bell for treats?? Probably bad because Joey is chunky and loves food But oh so good for his mind Show us your birds learning new novelty behaviours
01.01.2022 Meet Stu-pid the Lorikeet. Cassie stoped into The Unusual Pet Vets at Murdoch University this week to drop off some brochures and little Stu got a quick training session. Here Stu is learning step up and step off. You may notice Stu is quite reluctant, he is unsure if Cassies arm is a stable perch, this is due to having poor eye site as a result of his mutation. We cant wait to see how far he and his mum progress
01.01.2022 Chickens also need enrichment Here are some of Cassies baby chooks having their first little play in the sun with a mini foraging toy. How do you keep your chickens entertained?
