24.01.2022 The Parthenon in Autumn. Subdued light, overcast stirs yet the architectural brilliance merely assumes a different hue. #parthenon #ParthenonMarbles

24.01.2022 "The outgoing president incited violence in an attempt to retain power, and any elected leader defending him is violating their oath to the Constitution and rej...ecting democracy in favor of anarchy. This is not law and order. This is chaos. It is mob rule. It is dangerous. This is sedition and it should be treated as such." (National Assoc. of Manufacturers CEO Jay Timmons). See more

23.01.2022 Melina Mercouri, the Greek Minister for Culture who most effectively raised the important question of reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, would be 100 years old today were she still with us.

23.01.2022 The doors of Greece’s museums may still be shut to the public due to the countrywide lockdown, but that hasn’t stopped the Acropolis Museum from making its collections and research more accessible than ever.

22.01.2022 The Parthenon Marbles do not belong to Britain, they belong to themselves and ONLY to themselves, and when they are reunited in Athens, they will be telling us of 2500 years of glorious Greek history. Emanuel J Comino AM Chair IOCARPM

21.01.2022 This piece from Neos Kosmos has a video of the inaugural ceremony for the new lighting of the Acropolis. Internationally acclaimed lighting specialist Eleftheria Deko was selected for the project, funded and implemented by the Onassis Foundation. According to the announcement of the Ministry of Culture, the new study uses lighting gradients in intensity and shades of white, between the outer and inner parts of the monuments, in order to highlight their architectural elements and enhance perception of their reliefs, depth and plasticity. As part of the technical upgrade, light pollution is reduced.

20.01.2022 Yet another atmospheric view of the Parthenon. This is the only place for all of the Parthenon Marbles.

20.01.2022 This is a reminder that of 20 June 2021 the Acropolis Museum celebrates its 12th anniversary. Have you been. We would love to see your images from the Acropolis Museum. Please follow us, and post your photos or videos of the Acropolis Museum, the eventual home for all the surviving Sculptures, Metopes and Frieze from Parthenon.

19.01.2022 Thanks to the British Committee for this post.

15.01.2022 It is impossible not to be awed when one stands in the shadow of the great Parthenon and looks up at its elegantly carved Doric columns towering overhead. The quality of the craftsmanship, the stunning white Pentelic marble, the sheer size of this 2,500-year-old temple dedicated to Athena Parthenos the virgin goddess and patron deity of ancient Athens are all features of a unique, world-class monument that strike us immediately. However, there is much more to the Parthenon than first meets the eye.

14.01.2022 As a global pandemic alters the way we live, work and dream, there are those things that remain fixed. Immutable ideas and everlasting symbols that act as beacons of hope and equip us with courage and a clearer grasp of our small yet vital role in a bigger picture. In this dim hour, Athens shines a new light on its world-famous icon. It has been tested for months and now it's time for the Acropolis to glow brighter than ever before. The new lighting system is the work of award-wining lighting designer Eleftheria Dekoshe won an EMMY award for her lighting at the opening and closing ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Gamesand is donated by the Onassis Foundation. 13.01.2022 The British tabloid press publishes items like this from time to time. The reality is that there has been a significant growth in support for the return and reunification of the Parthenon Marbles.

11.01.2022 An interesting video on the history and development of the Acropolis monuments. Here are the video notes: "This video contains a description of the monumental buildings in the Acropolis. Especially it has a very interesting analysis of the proportions and optical refinements of The Parthenon.... This monumental work is a peripteral octostyle Doric temple on the Athenian Acropolis dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. Its construction began in 447 and was completed in 438 BC although decoration of the building continued until 432 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, considered the zenith of the Doric order. The construction of The Parthenon, made almost entirely of white marble from Mount Penteli, was initiated by Pericles in thanks to the gods for his victory against the Persians. The architects in charge of the work were Ictino and Calicrates and were, in most cases, under the direction of the architect and great Athenian sculptor Phidias, author of the sculptural decoration and the great statue of Athena Parthenos which was located as the centerpiece of the temple (measuring forty feet high and for its elaboration 1,200 kg of gold were needed)."

11.01.2022 As we move further into the digital age the possibilities for conveying essential information about the Parthenon, and the Parthenon Marbles campaign also grows. Ideas, anyone?

10.01.2022 A poorly researched article. We are republishing it because we would like to put the record straight. The article correctly states that Melina Mercouri was Greek Minister of Culture from Oct 1981. Minister Mercouri was inspirational in speeches that brought awareness of the Parthenon Marbles into the modern era and she promptly called for an international movement to campaign for reunification of Parthenon Marbles. The article correctly explains that The movement to return... the Greek marbles (that have been curated in the British museum for over 200 years) to their motherland started in the 1980s then it continues incorrectly: when the then Greek Minister of Culture, Melina Mercouri, initiated the global campaign International Association for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures. The organisation formed in October 1981 was this committee, the International Organising Committee - Australia - for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles. The International Association for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures was not formed until much later.

10.01.2022 On July 29, 1982 Melina Mercouri, Minister of Culture and Sciences of Greece, addressed the World Conference on Cultural Policies, organised by UNESCO in Mexico, and told the world that the #ParthenonMarbles must be returned to Greece. This signified the beginning of the modern campaign for their return. The following year she asked our Committee, formed in 1981, to lend assistance to the newly formed British Committee, now known as The British Committee for Reunification of ...the Parthenon Marbles. She was plain in her comments in Mexico explaining that: Lord Elgin claimed that his action was motivated by idealism, that it was necessary to save these marbles form uncultivated hands and indifferent spirits. Let me tell you a little story about that: The Acropolis was occupied by Ottoman forces under siege by the Greek army of national liberation. The Ottoman occupiers of the Acropolis were running sort of ammunition and began to destroy the columns to extract the lead for making cannonballs. The Greeks sent them a message which I think was historic: Don’t touch the columns of the Acropolis; we will send you cannonballs. And they did. It was these uncultivated hands which carried the cannonballs, and these indifferent spirits which gave up their lives in defense of their patrimony. She also said: You must understand what the Parthenon Marbles mean to us. They are our pride. They are our sacrifices. They are the supreme symbol of nobility. They are a tribute to democratic philosophy. They are our aspiration and our name. They are the essence of Greekness. #in_athens #parthenon #ParthenonMarbles #Elgin #BritishMuseum #TheAcropolisMuseum #Byron #Acropolis #Architecture #PedimentalSculptures #Metopes #Freize #Athens #BringThemBack #Sculpture #History #Geography #Helios #Selene #Cosmological #Imperial #BritishEmpire #melinamercouri

08.01.2022 Another image of the new lighting at the Acropolis.

07.01.2022 The Parthenon’s light reminds us of its importance. The first temple to place gods and humans on the same level, our beacon of democracy. When Elgin removed about half the existing Metopes, Frieze & Pedimental sculptures they became the tools of the British establishment The British Museum’s presentation of the Parthenon Marbles, taken by Elgin, is abstract. No longer can they forcefully radiate the message of democracy, they have been used to serve imperial visions. Now the museum argues this distortion of their message is creative.

06.01.2022 Congratulations to Emanuel J Comino the founder of this committee, the first outside Greece to campaign for the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles and their return to Greece. Emanuel worked closely with Melina Mercouri and the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles.

05.01.2022 We extend qualified support to this initiative that may only be taken up by citizens of the United Kingdom. Please read our comments in full. Speaking at the 2015 Athens Colloquy on the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, Chair of our Committee, Emanuel Comino, said this: ... "It is of the utmost importance that we lobby British politicians rather than going to court. Ultimate success, to a large measure, lies in changes to the British Museum Act of 1963. Such change will benefit from stimulating and encouraging public support in Britain." Our position has been to consistently support the need for statutory change in the UK. Many others have made this point over the years and initiatives involving the lobbying of politicians have been taken. If this petition stimulates awareness, then it's a good thing, but the question that arises in such cases is, what next. While we naturally extend qualified support for this initiative we are concerned that there is an unfortunate reference to the Benin Bronzes in the explanatory detail for this petition. Our focus is the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, not anything else. So while the principle is clear, change the British Museum Act, it is clouded by this additional detail. Melina Mercouri made matters most plain in her 1982 address to World Conference on Cultural Policies, organised by UNESCO in Mexico when she said: "We are not naive. The day may come when this world will create other visions, other concepts of what is proper, of what comprises a cultural patrimony and of human creativity. And we well understand that the museums cannot be emptied. But I insist on reminding you that in the case of the Acropolis marbles we are not asking for the return of a painting or a statue. We are asking for the return of a portion of a unique monument, the privileged symbol of a whole culture."

02.01.2022 Though this is a reproduction with the original stuck in the British Museum, the statement this work makes, when in the place it was intended to occupy, is unmistakable. This is a shot taken after noon. It conveys a real sense of the horse’s exhaustion after pulling a chariot across the sky. What an extraordinary work the Parthenon is. This is just one of its countless dynamic aesthetic elements.

02.01.2022 Posting a link to this ePetition, though it’s for the UK, because changing the British Museum Act 1963 is the easiest way to gain reunification of the Parthenon Mables. Allow the Trustees of the British Museum to accept repatriation requests.
