25.01.2022 I pruned enough rosemary for at least 2 years worth of eating and skincare making and Im also attempting to grow my own by striking as many as possible. If only 2 of these strike Im set for life! I dry it out and then blitz it to a powder for cooking to add to everything its the nicest way to eat woody herbs I reckon! 21.01.2022 I’m reflecting on my first 5 years of business. 4 of those I’ve spent teaching sustainability workshops and I’ve done the maths and realised I’ve taught close to 2000 people how to make their own beeswax wraps, almost 1500 people to skincare out of edible ingredients found in the pantry. I’ve worked with some wonderful communities, organisations, corporations and festivals. I have honed my skills and brought my business into line with my ethics, changing my packaging and usi...ng what’s available around me to make products in a small batch, handmade way. In a way that is easy to teach to others, to help free them from the hamster wheel of consumerism. I hope to expand on this particular idea this year to really spread the message of using what you have, where you are, to increase your positive impact! First up, my all time favourite bulk store in Marrickville @villagewholefoods family owned and operated by Suzanne and Paul and an excellent support staff! Thank you for being the first to stock my deodorants and balms, your constant orders have keep me going, particularly this year. I buy a lot of my ingredients for my skincare workshops in bulk at Village Wholefoods too! They have worked so hard this year providing staples and treats to the community and I’m so glad they have made it through the pandemic. I hope you find time to rest up a bit guys! 10.01.2022 Ahhh lip balm, tis the product that started the ball rolling for my skincare business in 2013. I had a lot of store bought crap filled with rubbish you dont want on your lips. Parrafin, petroleum jelly to name a couple. Lip balms should only contain butters, oils, waxes and a touch of vitamin E (maybe a bit of zinc oxide for sun protection). All of ours have the added benefits of calendula infused preparations made right here on the farm with oils from up the road they ar...e an essential item in winter for cold, dry lips, apply before bed and youll wake up with smooth kissable lips every time! There are so many accounts sharing tips and ideas on plastic reduction here on Instagram follow the hashtag #plasticfreejuly and youll find them all! Plastic reduction is a great place to start on your low waste journey but lets remember its only part of the story. Finding plastic free alternatives to items in your life opens up the opportunity to challenge other areas that cause ...damage as well. I stopped buying paper towels over a decade ago, most are wrapped in plastic and made of virgin forests even the recycled versions use a lot of resources in far off places before they reach our kitchens. Tea towels are a great alternative, abundant in op shops and are very affordable. Washed in cold water and air dried they present a durable and reusable low impact swap. I use them to wipe up spills and if its a big one, like the banana smoothie that was poured not spilled on my second hand 50yo Persian rug today, I use a bath towel instead. I use them to pat off excess cooking oil if my homemade fries are too oily (yes it makes the tea towel oily, I soak it in laundry powder before it goes in the wash and it comes out clean) I use my pretty vintage ones for hand towels and wash the windows and bathrooms with the old ones and when they are tatty and useless they go in the rag bag clean and dry for my husband to use in his workshop and then finally buried in the soil to compost. Trees are precious, they literally keep us breathing, so maybe try to go without your paper towels this July and see if you miss them We all know trees turn carbon into oxygen right!? Did you know that the carbon a tree stores over its lifetime in its boughs is expelled into the air when its chopped down? We need to keep them in the ground! Just oils, butters, waxes and plants. Our products are handmade by me and my Mum using predominantly locally grown ingredients. ... We up-cycle amber jars and bottles from other businesses into our supply chain. Our product packaging is compostable and refillable as well as recyclable. Our post packaging has always been compostable and usually second hand. We always reuse boxes, packing peanuts, corrugated paper and cardboard to wrap your orders. Our deliveries are carbon neutral, reliable and quick. We proudly use Sendle. We also offer free pick up in Sydney. 04.01.2022 Covid times are giving me space to get more creative with using all the edible parts of homegrown produce. Our food waste issue now is about preserving the abundance of the garden. A privileged position for sure but nonetheless challenging. So, Ive borrowed a juicer to turn all of our citrus into juice (before it spoils) to freeze for making into cordials, syrups and citrus butter for tart making (I can dream) the kiddos wanted to experiment so we picked carrots and beetroot...s from the garden and chopped up some watermelon, and citrus and made juices. They were delicious and colourful but jeez the leftovers are insane! So Im using my trusty guide @cornersmith salads and pickles book (on sale rn thru their website) and Im turning the carrot and beetroot tops into bouillon (veg stock paste, lasts a year on the shelf) and the watermelon rind into pickles using up all the leftover pickle juice in the fridge (I save all the leftover brine up in a jar to use up) and of course all the citrus peels are going in the dehydrator for my skincare. The leftover pulp will go into the compost because building good soil is very important now we have a veg patch. I used to bake it into a cake for the kids but they are on to me now so wont eat it! You can also make tabouli outta carrot tops (so similar to parsley) and beetroot leaf chips (like kale) for a bit of variety. 02.01.2022 Pandemic Gardening. Again the success Ive had in the garden is due to the privilege of time that covid has brought me while still being able to work remotely. Not afforded to all I fully appreciate. But its not just luck, this was planned, by my partner and I, to move to a place we could afford to thrive in not just survive, as we were in the city. To regenerate land and grow our own food. Like many, we found the time to dedicate time to doing things properly while in lockd...own. Built soil, garden beds, chopped and dropped, sheet mulched and set up the dam to water the crops, bought seeds and set to work. It took weeks of back breaking work for my partner while I worked, parented, grew seedlings and made snacks. Now we reap what we sowed less than 4 months ago and share it with all we know. This box has all our love and toil in it and is going home with friends. I love growing food, I love cooking what I grow but mostly I love to share it with those I love! They reached out to me in March to go online with my workshops and I’ve worked every week since. Creating kits and sending them out to individuals, corporations and not for profits wanting to keep their employees entertained. It’s been wonderful to teach people all over Australia and have conversations about how they were coping during lockdown (I’m looking at you Melburnians) while making beautiful skincare products, green cleaning products or beeswax wraps.
