23.01.2022 Blessed Sunday everyone. Heres a blog written by a young Fiji-born lawyer, Claudette Herman, who lives in Auckland. Her blog explores colourism / racism within our own Pacific communities. It is a piece based on her own personal experiences that we, as Pacific people, are silent on. With recent mounting global discussion on George Floyd and black lives matter, Claudette talks about subconscious views and reasoning formed regarding the elevation of a race within our own communities. Its a timely piece and thought-provoking, especially in urban centres like Auckland, where there is a significant Pasifika community. https://itmakesyouthink.blog//it-starts-with-a-simple-haha/

16.01.2022 Today is Mabo Day we celebrate the life of Eddie Koiki Mabo, a Meriam elder from the island of Mer (Murray Island) in the Torres Strait. We honour Eddie Mabos legacy and reflect on his fight to overturn the doctrine of "terra nullius" as it applied to Australia (at that time), a Latin term meaning "land belonging to no-one". On 3 June 1992, 28 years ago, the High Court ruled that Australia was not a land that belonged to no one, thus overturning the doctrine of terr...a nullius, and paving the way for recognition of the indigenous peoples of these land and waters. This also marks the end of Reconciliation Week. Lets all come together and push for change. We share in the words of the late Rev Martin Luther King Jr "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" #MaboDay #blacklivesmatter #LetsMakeABetterWorld #Push4Change
