09.01.2022 A solution can create a problem. Luckily the solution to the second problem is pretty cute. When we ceased the use of glyphosate entirely in 2016, then moved away from all other herbicides in 2017, I thought we had the perfect plan to deal with the grass in the vine row. This was always going to be tricky as due to our unusual trellising system the undervine area is actually 2m wide with access issues. The plan was a rather expensive undervine mower converted to suit our uses... with various hydraulic adjustments, springs, levers and blades. Unfortunately, after a lot of broken posts, four days, and rather a lot a swearing it became apparent that this was not the ideal solution. Along came the sheep. High value, rare Babydolls which I have spoken more about in a previous post. With them, and their gorgeous lambs came another problem - foxes. And the solution to them Magnus! Magnus is a Maremma Sheepdog, which is a livestock guardian dog breed. Indigenous to central Italy, they have been used historically for protecting sheep from wolves but also work admirably against foxes in Australia. The name Magnus was given to many Norse Kings, it originates from Scandinavia and means Great Warrior. 07.01.2022 An important part of our Regenerative Agricultural approach to farming our land is the integration of livestock into the system. These guys are a rare breed Southdown sheep, affectionately known as Babydolls. Their short stature allows them to run in the vineyard all year round as they cannot reach the canopy. Once we have enough sheep they will be rotated through the property to mimic what their grazing patterns would have been in the wild. This has been shown to have huge b...enefits for soil health. We have not used herbicide in our vineyard for some years now, and due to our unusual trellising system undervine mowing/ploughing is near impossible. Not only can these guys and gals get right under the vine row, they will reduce our tractor use significantly - which in turn will reduce our farm emissions, reduce labour costs and reduce compaction issues - and at the same time every one of them is a transportable fertiliser factory! Unfortunately, they are so rare that it is difficult to get enough of them to do the job. We have therefore started our own breeding program and are very pleased to say that our flock has already grown from 4 to 8 this Spring. We also just got a delivery from Western Australia with 7 more. 05.01.2022 We’ve been farming our patch of dirt here in the Macedon Ranges according to Regenerative Agricultural practices for three years now, and wow what a difference we’ve seen, even in that short space of time. Noticeable improvements in grape quality and a massive increase in biodiversity on the farm. But it's not just about that. Yes, it enriches our soil and increases biodiversity but it also improves the water cycle and increases the carbon storage capacity of soil dramaticall...y - to the point where if enough farmers farmed this way it would actually have the ability to reverse climate change. I know that’s a pretty big statement, but I've done a lot of work on this, and its correct. This is part of how we, as a family and a business have decided to do all we can to look after our planet, our patch of dirt, those that enjoy our wine and us. 04.01.2022 I had never nurtured the dream of becoming a vigneron/winemaker although some time spent in Italy had sparked my enthusiasm for good wine. I had been working in England to save the money to go to Perugia University and whilst there drank some beautiful wine made by ‘peasant’ artisan winemakers in the hills above. What made me think I could do the same, I don’t really know; hubris, I guess. Whatever it was, it saw me and partner Sue Mackinnon in September 1973 inspecting a sm...all property of some twenty acres with a substandard house and a couple of gnarled and ancient vines, the remnants of a bygone vineyard. So we bought it, 200 kilometres from Melbourne, where we lived. Our friends, justifiably, thought we were mad. Neither of us had ever grown anything in the ground before so we had to learn, we did know however that anything we grew would have to be grown organically, no pesticides, insecticides or herbicides. We worked and lived in Melbourne and attended to the needs of the property on weekends as we slowly developed skills, bought a tractor and a few implements and planted our vegetables and vines, not imagining, of course that a few years later we would be commissioned to write ‘The Grass Roots Vegie Grower’s Companion’ or that I would be commissioned to write ‘Establishing Your Own Vineyard’ which I did under the nom de plume of ‘Grenville Nash’. 03.01.2022 To all our loyal customers, We would like to wish you a very a safe and happy Festive Season. Its been an interesting roller coaster ride of a year, but we were overwhelmed and humbled by all the dedicated and supportive Passing Clouds fans out there. As a business we have got through it and the light at the end of the COVID tunnel is a little bit brighter! As usual we would not have survived this year without our brilliantly talented PC team - who endlessly keep the cogs tic...king in this business. 02.01.2022 Cam is pretty chuffed with this review from well renowned wine critic, Huon Hooke from The Real Review on our 2019 Estate Pinot Noir. Deep red/purple, impressive colour for a young pinot. Deep rich, red and dark cherry aromas, spicy and herby, screams pinot noir and is all about fruit, not artifact. Pot pourri; a hint of clove. Complex and not easily described. The palate is full and rich, generous and rounded - lots of ripe, soft, rounded tannins.
