25.01.2022 ROME'S COLOSSEUM SPARKLES AFTER $28 MILLION RESTORATION. More than US$28 million was allocated for the cleaning of the monument, which was built to host gladiatorial contests nearly 2,000 years ago. The multi-million restoration project of the Roman Colosseum ended its first phase this weekend after three years of cleaning efforts to remove decades of grime caused by traffic pollution in the Italian capital. "The stone had been so blackened that the Colosseum almost seemed to... fade into the background for Romans who passed it daily on their commutes," the project director Rossella Rea said Friday. More than US$28 million were allocated for the cleaning of the monument which was built to host gladiatorial contests nearly 2,000 years ago. The money was donated by luxury shoemaker Tod's. Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi hailed the project as an example for protecting the country's vast cultural heritage, also praising private investment to a site that attracts 6 million visitors a year. The Colosseum stayed open to tourists during the restoration of its exterior, with scaffolding covering only one section at a time. Scientists from Yale University say inviting good bacteria, into your home can help to prevent allergies and possibly asthma. In a paper published in the journal Trends in Microbiology, they make a case for building homes that let the right microbe in, rather than trying to keep all bugs out. Its a common misconc...eption that all microbes found in ones home are hazardous to your health, says Yale Professor Jordan Peccia. They point to past studies showing that kids who grew up on farms, where they were regularly exposed to bacteria, were less likely to develop allergies. One particular study found children from a Bavarian family, a population known for its farming lifestyle, had less than half the levels of asthma compared to a suburban European family 5.2 per cent compared to 19.1 per cent. This was likely because the good bacteria sends signals to white blood cells, known as T-cells, to prevent an unnecessary immune response. When someone has an allergic reaction to a substance, such as dust or pollen, their immune system overreacts by producing antibodies that attack the allergen, causing them to wheeze, itch or get a runny nose. As the scientists learn more about which microbes are beneficial to human health, they suggest building design could potentially be used to change the exposure to these good bugs through ventilation, building materials and layout. As more and more beneficial microbes are identified, we architects, engineers, and the general public need to think about how we can facilitate our exposure to them, Prof Peccia said. Its acknowledged the research is still in its infancy, and that one obvious hurdle to improving a homes ventilation is poor outside air quality in many cities. However, one way to train the immune system is through exposure to animals, especially cats and dogs, says Prof Peccia. Not everyone should run out and get a dog, of course, he says, but we can work to develop new, quantitative approaches for solving these problems something better than our portable air filters and inhalers.

Tuesday and Wednesday are holidays in Nigeria to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The US State Department in June also issued a warning over the possibility of terror attacks in South Africa ahead of the month of Ramadan. From 9 a.m. to noon on nearly every Saturday from May through October, volunteers staff HazWaste Central. Run by the Regional Water Authority on Sargent Drive in New Haven, the service is available to residents throughout the region. Each area town takes a turn staffing the program with volunteers. North Haveners will be there July 9. Theyll be checking IDs, logging people in and keeping track of who comes from which towns, said Lynn Sadosky, Director of Public Works. Each town is charged depending on how much is brought in from that particular town. The program is designed to make it easy and convenient for people to properly dispose of hazardous trash such as pesticides, paint, cleaning products and the like. Its a great service that allows people to clean out the garage and dispose of it the right way, Sadosky said. It helps eliminate illegal dumping down storm drains or putting it in regular household trash. According to information provided by the Regional Water Authority, household hazardous waste comes from everyday products used in the home, garage, yard or garden. Typical products that can be brought to HazWaste Central include: aerosols; floor care products; polishes; drain cleaners; disinfectants; gasoline, car batteries; paint thinner; transmission fluid; pesticides; artists paints; moth balls; fluorescent bulbs; mercury containing items; and batteries. Sadosky also points out that people who use the service do not get out of their vehicles and the people who volunteer to help do not come in direct contact with any of the hazardous materials.
