25.01.2022 Brought some new shelving yesterday and enough stuff to make a cheap, basic table with minimal tools (a drill pretty much). Expect some new pictures and updates over the next week or so as I manage to get cracking on the setup!
22.01.2022 Hmm...I wonder what could possibly be in this box?...
21.01.2022 Took the wife to a leather store the other day and instantly regretted it. She found a new outlet to satisfy her love of all things teal... She now has a brand new card holder for her cleaning business. I asked if I could have the first brown one I made for her now she has a new one in her favourite colour, she very sternly informed me that I couldn't. I swear she is aiming to use a different one every day of the week... I didn't have a small enough snap for the thickness of the leather so used adhesive hook and loops instead. She later informed me that she doesn't want me to replace the ghetto fix with a proper one once I buy more snaps. I think she's crazy but the customer is always right I spose :D
19.01.2022 Table top glued! I ran out of big boy clamps for the middle cowls (the boards squeezing the tabletop flat) unfortunately so I am hoping these ones will suffice...yeah o.k, they are more for looks and to make me feel better but oh well! More sanding to smooth down the slight board bows will be in order :D I also much would have preferred five pipe clamps on a table this long but the four I have will have to do! I also managed to crack one of the plastic covers when I went to t...ighten up so that was a major bummer as I had to pay extra for those but oh well! Must have copped a dodgy one as the rest held up fine. I also would have liked to clamp the cowls further in but don't have flat enough clamps for the space underneath so it is what it is. To anyone wondering, yes this was an absolute nightmare to navigate (you're gunna need to shift your butt Maddie!), I'm not a young fella anymore and have a dodgy foot among other things so I have decided we simply must have a bigger shed before I do another one. I wonder if I can talk our landlady into knocking down a wall and extending! :D Now, for the next 24 hours, nobody so much as BREATH in the shed!
17.01.2022 Work table for $55 ($58.60 if you count the price of the screws) anyone? Yes please! One $20 sheet of malamine, five $7 legs from the big green shed and 30 screws later and wahbam! Instant work bench. Throw in a cheap $20 stool and it is a low cost way to get up and running with minimal tools. Just need a screwdriver. Given that it is malamine it has the added bonus of being easy to clean and glue won't stick to it. Win/win! Oh and don't mind the messy space. It is a work in progress. A trip to the dump is in short order! :D
16.01.2022 One brand new, scrapwood work box for the wife. She is a cleaner and struggles finding a decent bag or container for all her cleaning gear that won't fall apart on her, while still making it easy to access everything and not be too unwieldy to carry. I took the liberty of pinching some her stuff and loading it up for a test run. So far so good! I'd better put it all back where it belongs before she expects me to use it...
15.01.2022 O.k I have been a bit slack posting. Give me a break, I've only been here a month! :D Here is how things are progressing so far... New shelving (I love these things. $44 from bunnings, bargain!) - check! Unpacking - 90% check!... New workbench - check sort of. More to follow on that in it's own post... All the moving boxes and clutter like the mower, etc sorted out - not yet!
15.01.2022 Workspace is empty. Tools are gone. Big changes are on the horizon. Stay tuned...
15.01.2022 One brand new stitching pony made from scrap wood. Once the jaws are lined with some scrap leather she'll be good to go! This will definitely make it easier to stitch larger items. Sure it doesn't stand upright very well by itself and makes it harder to store than a conventional one, but well worth the tradeoff and I can always modify it later if it annoys me too much.
15.01.2022 Well Frankie is back together and mounted on his new stand. Based on my previous I-beam style sawhorse I built - this stand is nice and solid, has room to mount my stitching pony to for when I need to saddle stitch and above all is super portable. Even doorways are easily traversable. I will need to get some more bolts and wing nuts to mount the stitching pony but for the moment a clamp will suffice. I still need to clean the bobbin holder and fine tune things like the tension springs but all good signs so far. I am still up in the air about adding the spool holder bolt for now as eventually I will probably get a decent one and attach it to the sawhorse. I also have ample options to add a motor and foot pedal further down the track if I get tired of hand cranking or want two free hands to control material.
14.01.2022 Quick little afternoon project making a rustic planter box out of fence palings and scrap wood for my wife's friend's kidlets to have some weekend fun with. They are only little tackers so it needed to be low and not too wide. Once the glue dries, a quick sand and she'll be ready to green up a patch of garden! Gotta love working with fence palings. Nothing squares up and everything is bowed and warped! It is great for that Australiana look we all love though - bush or beach c...hic is easily obtainable with some whitewash or worn paint effect. I am leaving this one raw however, in case they want to give it the once over themselves! Also, note the offset middle supports. This is not intentional. Long story short - measure twice, cut once! It is what it is and I will own a mistake any day, it just makes you hungry to learn from them and do better next time. Wear them with pride and never be ashamed to admit error. Nothing in life is ever truly perfect and you will drive yourself crazy chasing it. Falling just shy of a high set bar is "perfectly" fine! :)
12.01.2022 Out of the shed today, building and installing 5 metres of temporary fencing to keep my father's dogs in and allow more parking space for his new car. Terrible photography I know but it was a long day and my phone is old haha
10.01.2022 Another quick update on Frankie. It has been a super hectic couple of weeks so I am only halfway as far along as I'd like to be. In other words, about halfway haha! Snatching whatever morsels of time I can here and there is frustrating but that is life sometimes and it is coming along. I have given the arms a good sanding, ensured all important surfaces (walking foot, edges, etc) are a bit smoother and lubricated everything with 3 in 1 oil, including frame, screws, springs, e...tc. I don't think this beast will be rusting any time soon. I hit (drenched!) the bearings and sliding shaft with a liberal (massive!) amount of white lithium grease after clearing as much junk out of the reachable spaces as possible. I would have liked to sand all the gunk off the arms but don't have a belt sander or such so relied on an orbital sander of all things and a ton of elbow grease. They are a good 90% there though and honestly, it is probably more an ascetic thing beyond this point as the parts that contact metal are nice and smooth. Reassembly has commenced and hopefully I can have Frankie put together and ready to fine tune over the weekend some time. Maybe that could be my Father's day gift this Sunday - more time! :D
07.01.2022 What a mess! It is a necessary mess though. These things arrive pretty rough and greasy and dirty so I needed to tear it down and work on cleaning it up and lubricating all the parts. I have quite a job ahead of me sanding as much of this grime off as possible wherever it comes into contact with other parts. Let's hope I can remember how to put it back together haha
04.01.2022 Wood - Check! Taped up cowls - Check! Pipe clamps - Check! Brand new dining table - Damn straight!... This will be my first ever table so I am bound to make a few mistakes along the way but I'm sure it will turn out o.k. So long as my kids can sit down at it for their first ever organised dinner time rather than one at the breakfast bar, the second at a toddler table and Mum and Dad balancing a plate in their laps I'll be happy. Well overdue I know haha And yes, there is a third set of cowls for the centre. I just hadn't taped them up and put them with the others before I snapped the pictures so that mistake has been averted, don't worry! :D
04.01.2022 Introducing Frankie! Every sewing machine needs a name and this frankenstein assembly of a shoe patcher is no different. Sporting 1800's design that the patent expired on and modern Chinese manufacturing skills, Frankie should be a very welcome addition to the shed with a little tinkering and TLC. Stay tuned for fully assembled pics ;)
03.01.2022 Holy crap! The shed morphed into double the space! Just kidding, I just moved house! 600kms later and I am now in central Queensland. This shed doesn't look like much of a workspace at the moment but that will change as I get all our household stuff into the house and unpack what tools I have left as well as add to them. I needed to move on alot to downsize for the shift in location (no table saw! Eeeeek!) but am sure I have enough tools to kick off some projects and hey, it ...will be fun posting updates as I re-expand and clutter up the shed! :D No more busting my back manually opening and closing the door either! Suave!
02.01.2022 Another wet day in the shed. Time for something different. I need a new wallet and I am not gunna pay upwards of $40-$50 for some cheaply made one that every Tom, Dick and Harry is walking around with when I can make something that is unique myself and have it last longer! And yes, that is the beginnings of a satchel style bag in the background. I will list it on marketplace at some point so long as the wife doesn't decide she wants a new bag that matches my wallet! I don't like my chances...
