21.01.2022 Who Am I? There are a lot of new people here now, so I just wanted to take a minute to let you know who I am My name is Kirsten, and I am an Occupational Therapist. I have worked in paediatrics for 7yrs, and I focus on improving sleep quality in children with poor sleep. ... The reason I do this, is because of my own difficult journey with my son's sleep. I had been working as an OT for several years when I had him, and nothing I did would help him sleep. He was up 10x every night from 4 months to 19 months old. I will always advocate for responding to your child. If they are struggling with something, separation is not the answer. I focus on finding the cause of your little one's poor sleep. This means having an understanding of their neurological development, their physical needs and functions, their social / emotional development, and how they interact with their environment. We use all of these to make a plan to help your little one sleep So if you are struggling with your little one's sleep, flick me a PM or book in here for a Free Clarity Call with me: https://calendly.com/kirsten-hoogenhout/claritycall Kirsten xx
21.01.2022 Want to know what developmentally appropriate night feeding and waking looks like? We know that babies need to feed overnight, and with 70% of 12 month olds still waking for a night feed, they're going to be doing it for awhile! But how many night feeds is too many?
20.01.2022 What is Optimal Sleep? Are you wondering if there is a light at the end of the tunnel to improving your child's sleep.... You are getting worried because things just aren't improving, you can't see your way out? You have probably had people give you lots of advice, that you just need to do (insert unhelpful advice here)...... But you're not comfortable with the advice given. You're not sure it's the right thing for you and your little one... This is because Mums know when there is something not quite right... But you can't find anyone to agree with you. To point you in the right direction... So what happens next is we start to blame it on ourselves.... Along with trying to convince ourselves (hopelessly) that what is happening is normal. I'm sure all the people you have seen have told you that you're child is medically well, however, this does not mean that their sleep is OPTIMAL. There is a big difference between being 'Well' and being 'Optimal'. This then impacts how your baby develops, grows, and learns. I actually don't take on cases where children have developmentally normal sleep. That is why I always start my clients off with a Free Clarity Call. Because if your child's sleep is developmentally normal, then there is no need for me. What I look for in your Clarity Call, are signs of poor Quality Sleep... Indicators that their sleep is not neurologically typical. The thing is.... That these indicators do not say that your child is sick, as they typically do not cause any immediate risk to your child's health. But they are a wellness issue. Meaning that it can be improved to enable your child to grow and develop to their full potential. So don't doubt yourself as a mother. You know when something isn't right for your own child. It took me 2.5years to find someone who would listen to me.... And I dont want you to have to wait that long. So use the link below to book in for a Free Sleep Clarity Call, and we can work through it together xx https://calendly.com/kirsten-hoogenhout/claritycall
11.01.2022 Want to know why settling challenges come last? So often, I hear people recommend to change a babies settling technique first. They often blame or shame the parents for using the 'wrong' technique and making a rod for their own back! However, this couldn't be further from the truth!... The reason why I always address settling last, if at all is: - There is no evidence that settling techniques have any impact on sleep quality, meaning that they do not change the frequency of waking or how restful sleep is.... They just learn to stop asking for help. - When sleep is poor, the brain is flagging sleep as a risk, and your baby will automatically look for a safe condition i.e. you. Sleep training or settling is asking that biological function to stop, even though it is still detecting the risk. - Research has found that sleep training is not a one time event. Children with sleep quality issues need to be 're-trained' over and over again, because the cause of the poor sleep has not been addressed. - The last reason, is that is your little one is struggling with sleep, then any sleep training has the potential to be extremely traumatic for you both. So if you feel that there is a sleep quality issue in the way of your little one's sleep, please flick me a message, or join my Unlocking Sleep Group xx https://www.facebook.com/groups/unlockingsleep
