09.01.2022 POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT The primary goal of ABA is to build socially significant skills for individuals to improve their independence and quality of life!! This is achieved using evidence-based behaviour change procedures. Positive reinforcement is a hugely important principle used in ABA to establish and maintain behaviours that matter for the individual. It involves adding something following a behaviour to increase the future occurrence of this behaviour. For positive ...reinforcement to be effective, there are a few important rules to follow 1 Reinforcement must be highly specific to the individual. What is reinforcing for each learner is different and is subject to change. Our behaviour technicians are rockstars at identifying what is reinforcing for our learners in the moment. 2 Reinforcement must be delivered immediately following the desired behaviour! If reinforcement is provided a minute after the desired behaviour occurred, the learner may associate this reinforcement with a different behaviour. An example of positive reinforcement is playing a child’s favourite board game following the completion of brushing their teeth! += It is important to note that positive reinforcement is not just used for teaching kids, it is responsible for shaping lots of everyday human behaviour!! Can you think of some other examples where positive reinforcement is responsible for increasing the future frequency of your behaviour?

03.01.2022 Get to know Behaviour Analysis Did you know that we can learn via direct or indirect experience with something, someone, or an environment? Learning via direct experience is known as contingency- shaped behaviour and learning via indirect experience is called rule-governed behaviour Contingency-shaped behaviour involves receiving reinforcement or punishment following an action, which consequently increases or decreases future behaviour Rule-governed behaviour invo...lves learning without directly experiencing the consequence, that is, being told or reading about an outcome and indirectly learning to behave or not behave in a certain way For example, we directly learn that a car will take us from A to B when we turn it on and drive it, hence this is a contingency-shaped behaviour We indirectly know to stop at a red traffic light because we have been told, not because we have learnt about the negative consequences of not stopping at a red light Hence, this a rule-governed behaviour Both means of learning are important, and beneficial in different ways Can you think of some contingency-shaped or rule-governed behaviours
