23.01.2022 Guns blazing or enquiring? It's quite clear that there is an imbalance of power in the health care system. There seems to be a cultural and instinctive rejection of any attempts to self advocate. God forbid an informed family member step up for you. The problem is, because this imbalance is so deeply ingrained in health care culture, we tend to go on the immediate defence whenever our actions or in-actions are questioned.... Whenever someone points out where we may have overlooked something we deflect, we "yeah but" we shirk responsibility. Some even go so far as to take additional and unnecessary measure to prove their point or to disprove yours. How do we change this culture? How do we make health care and patient management and inclusive conversation rather than a dictatorship? A dictatorship where patients and their families risk ejection or inferior care for simply speaking up and asking for better! I believe it's all in the approach. Because health care culture aggressively rejects a "guns blazing" or demanding approach, why not try polite enquiry? Do your research, know your stuff and ask for help, support and information. I can't imagine any health care professional refusing such a request. With practice, and a collectively empowered and diplomatic voice, they'll get used to us and perhaps the conversation will change. @patientadvocacyplus #mutuallybenficialrelationships #nurseadvocate #patient advocate #positiveexperiences #positiveoutcomes #everyonewins

17.01.2022 It's ok to ask for help! We are so conditioned to do it all on our own. To believe that we are failing if we can't. If we feel overwhelmed or unsure. We have to soldier on and figure it out for ourselves. What if we changed our perspective on that?... Consider this.. Asking for help gives other people the opportunity to shine! Consider the last time someone asked you for help. How good did it make you feel knowing that you were able to make a small and positive difference in someone's life. To lighten their load, just a little bit. I personally love that feeling! Being given the opportunity to use my skills and experience to help improve someone's situation is a huge thrill! I get an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction and joy from it! So don't do it for you. Do it for them. Your asking for help is the perfect way to give someone the opportunity to feel fantastic and do what they know how to do. Selfish not to really #patientsfirst #patientadvocate #nurseadvocate #positiveexperiences #positiveoutcomes #askforhelp

14.01.2022 NEW SERVICE I've been inspired to offer a new service. It seems there are many of us out there who have been traumatised more than we have been healed by our hospital experience.... Maybe not really understanding what, why and how your experience came to be what it was is part of what troubles you? Come chat with me. I'll help you understand why they did what they did. How that may have happened. What it meant when they said... Sometimes gaining a bit of understanding can help things make sense @patientadvocacyplus #patientadvocate #healthtrauma #unpackyourexperience #nurseadvocate #patientsfirst

12.01.2022 What's your story? Your story is an important part of your health care journey. Not just the story of what got you here, what's wrong with you and how they're going to fix you. Your story about how this affects you, how you came to realise you were unwell. How, once you were told your suspicions were right, what that meant for you. How your family reacted or might yet react. How you blame yourself, or someone or something else. All the doubt, fear and confusion.... You hand over yourself to your health care professional only to have them rush you out the door. You leave feeling cut short, vulnerable and helpless. I want to hear your story! Not just the bits I might deem relevant to your care planning, but all of it! Every detail you feel compelled to share because it's ALL relevant. I've got time to listen! I will hear you when you feel dismissed. I will see you when you feel like a number. I will advise you based on your WHOLE story. And I thank you for the honour of your sharing it with me. #patientadvocate #nurseadvocate #patientsfirst #shareyourstory #positiveexperiences #positiveoutcomes
