23.01.2022 Empowering through technology A billion people have a disability, so technology that could help disabled people improve their quality of life are welcome! There is some cool technology out there, check this out! ... Smart glasses: there are about 39 million blind people in the world and therefore, a neuroscientist developed a pair of glasses that accentuate the contrast between light and dark objects. The glasses aims to represent the world in simple and unambiguous real-time images. Talking hands: this technology could help the 1.5 million people in the world who are deaf and blind. Using this technology, people can communicate using tactical alphabets pressing or pinching different parts of the hand that represents different letters. Reliable signals: Advances in 3D printing and bio-electronics are helping replace missing limbs with prosthetics and give disabled people extra functionality. One example is the development of an armband. That enables a person to control computer devices by reading the electricity produced by their skeletal muscles. Which then sends these signals wirelessly via Bluetooth. What kind of tech device would you want to be invented in the future? 17.01.2022 Traveling with your wheelchair? Her are some things to keep in mind -Wheelchair accessible accommodation doesnt mean the same thing everywhere. Unfortunately, accessibility laws arent a universal standard. Its important to ask about the details, such as if the accessible bathroom have a roll-in shower or a removeable showerhead, to know what to expect. - Planning in advance makes your traveling less stressful. Be sure to call your airline with at least 48 hours notice to... submit and approve any special assistance travel request. Arranging things, such as assistance, ahead of time will ensure that your airport and in-flight experience goes as smoothly as possible. - Envision your travel goals, and dont limit yourself. Think big and think about what you want to experience. There are many adaptive sports programs in world-class destinations, for a tropical holiday, cruises are a great option that caters to a wide audience and tend to be very accessible. There are also travel agencies that are both experienced and specialised in arranging trips for people with physical disabilities. Have a beautiful Thursday! The Patient Handling Team

15.01.2022 Interior design with disability access in mind = When decorating and designing homes to be accessible, it is easy to forget some important functional details. Here is some advice to keep in mind when creating an accessible home. ... - Heights, light switches, door handles, emergency buttons all need to be placed in an accessible height. - Counters: make sure kitchen and bathroom counters are at an accessible height and have room for the wheelchair to fit underneath. - Adjustable furniture: if there are individuals with different heights living together, adjustable furniture such as counters and tables, could be an option. - Ceiling hoists installed in the bedroom, even extending to the bathroom if possible to make it easier to get around and increase floor space. We can help you with this. Visit https://hubs.ly/H0kFKxm0 More info: https://hubs.ly/H0kFJkQ0 Have a great Monday evening! The Patient Handling Team

12.01.2022 How should you talk to children about disabilities? Whether its a classmate or a loved one, your child probably has someone in their life with a disability that they might have questions about. It might be useful to be prepared for addressing your childs curiosity. Here are some tips: 1. It is ok to notice. Children are naturally curious, so if they see someone with a disability, their first instinct might be to ask about it. A short and matter-of-fact description will ans...wer your childs questions. Try to keep the explanation positive, for example, explain that a wheelchair helps others move around, instead of using a negative connotation such as she cant walk. 2. Use respectful terminology. Children remember what you say so when talking about someone with a disability, use the right language. Teach your child to use the correct term, such as wheelchair user or she has a learning disability. 3. Emphasise similarities. Your child must understand that someone with a disability is still the same in many ways. Take care by separating the person from his or her disability by talking to your child about those similarities. That will show your child that having a disability does not define a person, much like your childs physical characteristics dont define them.
