25.01.2022 Amazing what a sensational independent advocate can do and the outcomes that they achieve. Amazing work from my colleague Dorothy Kamaker . #patientadvocatesaustralia #patientadvocates @patientadvocatesaustralia

21.01.2022 We are independent advocates and act for people who are overwhelmed or dissatisfied with the health or aged care systems. We try to ensure proactive choices and solutions, especially for our older clients where independence, diminishing cognitive function and safety can be an issue. Elder abuse is on the rise and the more so with the pressures of COVID. We step in to collaborate when medical care is unsatisfactory and collaborate with doctors and hospitals to improve processes and outcomes. My colleague, Alicia Dunn, and I are both RNs and both qualified patient advocates. If you ever encounter a client (or a friend or family) whose health or wellbeing would benefit from some expert support, we would be happy to provide them a complimentary consultation to evaluate their needs. 20.01.2022 I have several clients who have been labelled malingerers because this diagnosis is often difficult. It takes a thick skin and skilled advocacy to prevail. #patientadvocatesaustralia #patientadvocates @patientadvocatesaustralia

16.01.2022 An unexpected COVID positive!! Right now my practice is 100% teleconferencing. There have been almost no downsides to this mode, its cheaper for my clients and the doctors are running early/on time virtually EVERY appointment. Long may it last.
16.01.2022 Face to face is not always wise. We specialise in phone & video conferencing for doctors appointments. Essential during this crisis and good sense in the longer term.

12.01.2022 This is worth watching. For me, its not the horror errors or conditions that were worst, it was the people who attempted to whitewash them: Brad Hazzard, the doctor mate of the negligent anaesthetist etc. pretty well all the brave people who blew whistles were retired and not at risk of retribution. The ED nurse in Tasmania might be in danger. He looked fragile and sounded desperate. Hell leave and then what? I am a private patient advocate and when I get pushback from a provider I say to them in front of my client Repeat this out loud to me: I AM YOU. IM STANDING IN YOUR SHOES. Now, how sure are you about your advice/treatment? Im not and neither is my client. How are we going to resolve this?. #patientadvocatesaustralia @patientadvocatesaustralia #patientadvocates

09.01.2022 1.38pm Get your surgeons attention. Elective surgery restrictions will be lifted after the Anzac Day weekend, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced.... The surgeries allowed include IVF procedures, screening programs, post-cancer reconstruction procedures, all procedures for children under the age of 18, all joint procedures, cataract and other eye surgeries, endoscopies, colonoscopies and other category two or equivalent procedures. "This will not mean an immediate return to normal but a graduate restart subject, of course, to capacity," the Prime Minister said. "There is a road back, there is a road ahead."
09.01.2022 Medibank & HCF will no longer cover the cost of your single room in a public hospital. HCF said the fund "understands acutely that affordability of private insu...rance is a major challenge" and was "doing all we can to help address this issue for our members" however, it will no longer cover the cost of a single room in a public hospital in NSW. The fund promised to pass on the savings in the form of lower premium increases. Discuss. Points for introducing logic (not), (in)consistency, ethics and likely impact on fund membership numbers. If you are an HCF or Medibank member, look down. See your feet??
09.01.2022 Confusion + anxiety = wrong choice. Surgeons may be exploiting rising demand for explant surgery Women could be left deformed by unnecessary implant remova...l, says Professor Anand Deva A leading plastic surgeon has warned that women could be left deformed as some doctors try to profit from the rising demand for explant surgery. He fears they are making wrong choices based on pressure, misinformation and misunderstanding. Professor Deva, head of cosmetic plastic and reconstructive surgery at Macquarie University, says there has been a rise in the number of women asking about explant surgery. Youve got to ask yourself, if there is no local complication and no swelling, why is there a business model springing up around low-cost implant removal? The same doctors who made money out of implants going in are now trying to make money out of implants going out. One in eight women have breast cancer, but you dont see anyone advocating for mastectomies for all women. Patients who are concerned should approach their surgeon accompanied by an independent advocate who can help the wade through the hype and salesmanship and who can help them translate the jargon and evidence they are bombarded with. #patientadvocatesaustralia
08.01.2022 If you are admitted to hospital for mental health reasons and your rights are denied you, get an advocate, very early. Yesterday my client who has long standing PTSD was denied treatment for the physical illness that took him to ED, was scheduled (involuntary admission) and had his access to support people severely limited. As soon as I intervened (and arranged for him to see a lawyer) things magically improved. I didnt do anything complex: I just let them know they were bei...ng watched. The attitude of staff and his treatment improved noticeably. It seemed to me that his management by the hospital was exacerbating his mental health problems. The more he was being denied treatment for his painful rash, the more he was becoming distressed and scratching his skin, the more assertive he was becoming, the more he was being labelled by staff as dysfunctional. You have to break this cycle early. See more

05.01.2022 If you (a loved one or friend) is concerned about health or aged care, we can support you to get access, improve standards or add old fashioned case management.... In aged care we reduce the frustration, exhaustion and anxiety involved in organising home support, transition to residential care and monitoring/ coordination of medical care at home or in a nursing home. For hospital care, we explore and address your concerns about standards, communication (not), delays and anything else thats not right. If your gut says this cant be right then you need to call before things go south quickly. In 2019, 70% of our clients delayed seeking support for completely preventable complications or mismanagement and suffered poor health outcomes, often irreversible. We can prevent disasters but we cant undo them. Walking on water is someone elses domain . We are qualified private patient advocates and case managers. Call Alicia Dunn on 0456 060 353. An enquiry is cost and obligation free.
05.01.2022 Looking back over 2019 there has been one theme of our work that stands out: intervening in hospital care when the age of the client became a factor in the avai...lability, options and standards of that care. Time and time over we have had family members call attempting to prevent premature discharges, insist on all treatment options, have a clients treatment wishes acknowledged and control unsuitable nursing home transfers. The pressure on hospital budgets is resulting in changes in attitude and behaviour towards the elderly. Hospitals need beds and length of stay is cited instead of health outcomes when families are being told that an older person must go home. The family usually doesnt know how to resist even though their gut is saying this is wrong. The second theme is that palliative care must happen in an aged care facility (even if you are 35 years old) unless the death of the patient is about 3 weeks away. Hospices do not like very slow dying and acute hospitals are not set up for it or good at it. Stay well in 2020. Be proactive and confident with your healthcare. See more
03.01.2022 Coping with your own healthcare can be complex, exhausting, overwhelming and stressful Supporting someone elses health or aged care can be time consuming, frus...trating and a huge responsibility IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE LIKE THIS Receiving reliable, plain English reports from doctors appointments doesnt always happen Hospital (public and private), nursing home and home base medical care is sometimes sub standard, poorly coordinated and badly communicated Finding and monitoring first class services in order to keep someone living independently at home can be be pure guess work Interacting with your medical providers is frequently intimidating IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE LIKE THIS Because we are qualified as both health professionals and advocates, we can be on your side and at your side when you want. We can improve health outcomes, save you money, prevent stress and conflict and become a valuable resource when and where you need us. www.patientadvocateS.com.au
