17.01.2022 The winter sunlight gives a warm glow to this broken brick gabion wall, which we built in Fitzroy a few years ago. A gabion (from Italian gabbione meaning "big cage") is a cage, cylinder, or box filled with rocks, concrete, or sometimes sand and soil. Early gabions were round cages with open tops and bottoms, made from wickerwork and filled with earth for use as military fortifications. These early military gabions were most often used to protect sappers and siege artillery gunners. This contemporary gabion creates a formidable entrance way to a striking modern design which it beautifully unites with a preserved Victorian facade.
