25.01.2022 [Meet the Coin-Operated Band:] Brodie Hewetson - Drums Ukulele Dream Girl Does Amanda Palmer is opening in a few short days, so we thought you might like t...o get to know the band, why not start with our drummer lets paint the scene Amanda Palmer first made waves in the cabaret and alternative music scene around the globe with her incredible band The Dresden Dolls with the amazing drummer Brian Viglione (also know for his work with NIN & the Violent Femmes) Brodie Hewetson our #CoinOperatedBand drummer may be a sweetheart from the Riverland, but this emerging star of the musical theatre scene is ready to step up to the challenge of keeping pace with Vigliones passion! Brodies love of the drums began in primary school where he was part of the junior band and community band. He began taking music more seriously in high school and it led him to touring from his hometown in the Riverland across Australia and now to his studies at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. He has studied classical percussing since 2018 and is now transferring his focus to Jazz Drums. Brodie has had a blast getting involved in the Adelaide musical theatre scene and dreams of playing the cruise ship circuit around the globe. Brodie has been part of a number of Fringe shows over the years and looks forward to playing the festival again. by Charlotte Kirby See more

24.01.2022 You probably know that I have a long-standing relationship with Adelaide's Rundle Mall. After a few years "on the fence", I became a full-time street musician i...n the mall in 2007. The pre-GFC world was a time when opportunity abounded and CDs sold themselves. I was inspired by veteran buskers like Lindsay Buckland (pictured behind me, below right) who were successful independent artists, with the freedom to travel the world. For a while, it was the best gig of my career. Business was good, and busking was viewed as part of the "bigger picture" by influential people like Martin Haese - the former mall manager and Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide (pictured below playing my friend Greg Wain's guitar). Street performers were an integral part of the mall culture. More importantly, my first contact with many of you was in Rundle Mall, or via a number of gigs that came about as a direct result of me performing there. As time went by, this effectively allowed me to build a new music career, years after I decided to "quit" in the late 90's. My bond with the mall will always remain because of this. But as we know, change is inevitable. I don't want to bore you with a novel, so let me just say that things have become progressively harder in terms of making music on the streets. There are many reasons for this, but one of them is that there are more people competing for less cash. Everyone is working harder and longer. This in turn has led to a number of issues, such as noise levels increasing. The short version of the story is that the Adelaide Council has now decided to ban amplification in Rundle Mall. While I understand the reasons, I personally believe that this is like treating a broken leg by amputating an arm. It only gets rid of part of the problem, and hurts people who haven't done anything wrong. Many acoustic instruments are capable of making just as much noise (from trumpets to various forms of percussion). Unfortunately, I play a plank of wood which relies on some amplification to be heard at all, so my association with Rundle Mall is currently at an end. While that is disappointing, it won't affect my ability to make a living or produce music at this point. However, there are some performers who rely almost entirely on working in Rundle Mall, and I feel their pain deeply. It also means that visitors to the busiest street in our city will be treated to a much smaller variety of performers. If any of you are regular or occasional visitors to Adelaide and the mall, or even if you have only been here once in your life - please let the decision-makers know how you feel by writing to the following: [email protected] (Rundle Mall) [email protected] (City council) Thanks for your time and support.

22.01.2022 Paula Standing - Singer Songwriter is an Americana inspired artist, during her set at 1:30pm on Sunday you can tip her via paypal via: paypal.me/PaulaStandingAU... Immersed in a sea of live music created during her familys regular front parlour sessions, Paula Standing continues to be impacted by the musical and personal influences in her life. Gritty tales of truth, with a spattering of murder ballads, cloaked in an innocent Americana sound woven with influences from across the planet. Whether in the desert outback or beside the surf beaches of Australias substantial coastline, Paula is an established favourite amongst the Australian contemporary indie roots scene, where wry humour and warmth are as much a part of the show as her impressive vocal range and guitar combo. Recent collaborations with Rod McCormack and Lou Bradley has produced a heavenly new album with the first single, Hiding Out In Tuscany. Further tracks to be released throughout the year, with the full album The More I Give slated for September. Clever lyrics, vocal prowess, real story-soundscapes, Australias Paula Standing delivers with a sting in the tale.

12.01.2022 The first performance as part of our inaugural Make Music ADL Livestream Festival will be Midnite Kiss! You can listen to their music online via soundcloud here... https://soundcloud.com/user-998836003 Midnite Kiss, a powerhouse 3 piece rock band, compromising Dave Varacalli (vox/guitar/songwriting), Toby Lovell (bass) and Mark Trimboli (drums) hail from Adelaide, South Australia and have a yarn or two to tell. They write simple songs about complex things; love, family, home, connection. Phrases turn; emotions are felt, melodies soar. You sing along even though you've never heard the tune before. Songs are written from a perspective of distances, of interludes between lovers and lives and the roads that lead from small towns to big cities. Early recordings were typically lo-fi affairs, stumbling from garage to studio with whatever cash they could scrape together to get songs down. Dave Varacalli, (vox/guitar/songwriter) with his old school influences, made the songs reminiscent of the stadium rockers of the 70's and 80's; Bruce Springsteen, John Melloncamp and Bob Seger, all of whom gave a reference point as to what his sound may be and with Midnite Kiss took him in the direction he wanted to go. Midnite Kiss is living their life through music and are playing songs precisely as they are meant to be, with love and passion. The music is the culmination of where life has taken them, where they have been and more importantly what it means to be alive. It is sure to strike a chord with fans old and new and to showcase the depth and quality of their songs.

07.01.2022 When I said goodbye to Rundle Mall with a final day of busking prior to the stay home recommendations back in March I didn't think it would be forever! These ar...e strange times and I figured even if it took a while, I would be back and busking again in Rundle Mall once they started re-issuing permits. Things have been going really well in Adelaide recently in terms of Covid-19. With most places now reopened here (with covid limitations of course) it seems right to be able to re-start busking too, at least while things are going well. So a few weeks ago the City of Adelaide started re-issuing permits for the greater area of the CBD, excluding Rundle Mall. Since the mall is the main stomping ground for buskers to earn money I figured I'd continue patiently waiting and see how we would be moving ahead with mall busking. Finally, two days ago, I find out Rundle Mall will be welcoming back buskers! Unfortunately, here's the kicker, they have banned the use of amplification within this area! Thus making Rundle Mall a no go for 90%, if not more, of Adelaide's Buskers! What a welcome back! I have been informed that noise complaints have been an issue that the council has had to deal with prior to Covid-19 and so this is their chosen strategy, a blanket ban of all amplified acts. I don't know anything about these complaints, but I do know that the local buskers I am aware of show respect to the council, the shops and the public around them and it seems a shame if the few have ruined busking here for the many! I have always loved Rundle Mall, a place where I have shared my passion through busking for almost a decade, and it saddens me greatly to think of never getting to share my music within our 'shopping and entertainment precinct' in the future just because my performance requires an amplifier. I am one of the lucky ones in that I don't solely rely on busking for my income, but so many others will be greatly affected by this change and I can only imagine how hopeless this has them feeling if the ban sticks. The thought of wandering through Rundle Mall as a member of the public and not hearing the beautiful relaxing tones of Andy Salvanos' chapman stick, Agnieszka Aga's energetic and moving violin covers, Bikie Busker's soothing flute tunes or countless other talented amplified performers' music makes me wonder what livelihood will remain there when we have all been excluded. Please, if you also disagree with this ban I would greatly appreciate you letting the decision-makers know how you feel by writing to the following: [email protected] (Rundle Mall) [email protected] (City council) If enough people reach out maybe we can get the powers that be to rethink their decision and implement systems that will be much fairer to us amplified buskers who do the right thing. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I hope you are all doing well and staying safe! Much love xx

07.01.2022 Top tip for getting more practice in: Don't store your guitar in it's case at home! Get yourself a guitar stand and leave your guitar out so it is easily accessible. Every time you walk past the instrument, pick it up and play a quick scale or lick for 30 seconds, then put it down and carry on your way. You'll quickly find you're playing more than you would if you only did a dedicated 30 minutes of practice every second day or so.

04.01.2022 I talk a lot about phrasing and musical space with my students, but Tim and Rick here have really explored layering in a studio context far better than I could. Must watch!

04.01.2022 I only had 2 out of 6 kids yesterday today, so they both got extra time. LOTS of extra time. Tyson learned the basics of A and E shape bar chords, and had his first improvisation attempt using the basic double 8ve Minor/Pentatonic/Blues shape...and the correct order to watch Star Wars for the first time during the upcoming quarantine.

03.01.2022 ZOOM MUSIC LESSONS Zoom is horrible for cutting non-voice sounds out unless you change the following settings in the desktop program: Zoom Home... Settings Audio Set mic volume almost but not quite at full and uncheck "automatically adjust volume." Advanced Check "Show in-meeting option to "Enable Original Sound" from microphone." Disable "Suppress Persistent Background Noise." Disable "Suppress Intermittent Background Noise." The program is trying to isolate the human voice. We don't want that, we want to hear music! https://patrickmaherguitar.com.au/video-lessons THE STUDENT WILL ALSO NEED TO CHANGE THESE SETTINGS ON THEIR OWN COMPUTER!

02.01.2022 Today, the Grand Prix was cancelled - which means we will unfortunately not be playing a show in Melbourne tomorrow. Today the Prime Minister of Australia also ...banned gatherings of over 500 people effective Monday. These are tough times, these are super tough times. Not only does that mean shows are cancelled, it also means the humans involved in putting on these shows lose work too. For how long? We do not know. The sound engineers, the lighting operators, the photographers, the security at the events, the bar tenders the ever growing list of people affected directly by cancellations of events. The same humans who banded together just last month and donated time and effort into raising millions for fire relief - All out of work for the foreseeable future. The Coronavirus doesnt just cause people to irresponsibly panic buy, it doesnt just cause a viral sickness, the knock on effect causes major job losses, it causes financial insecurity, it causes job insecurity and above anything else all of these things can and will lead to anxiety and depression. If you take anything away from this post, Think about your mates who might have lost a gig, think about the people that work with them that might have lost a job. The live music industry is worth billions to the Australian economy but right at this very moment it is like many other industries and in a really sad sad state. We need to stay strong, we need to support each other and we need to stick together until we pass through these troubling times. Love from Adam & Reuben See more
