You should treat your precious opal with the same care and respect as you would with any fine jewellery. 20.01.2022 For those that are interested I have decided to start posting about how to best care for your precious jewellery. A lot of people are unaware of what to use to clean your baubles. Some of you will have an ultrasonic cleaner, this is not the perfect way nor is it by any means the safest way. It can cause diamonds to cleave, emeralds to loose their colour and/or fracture and opals to shatter. It might not happen on the first, second or even 5th time you use the ultrasonic b...ut it can and is possible. So why risk it? So where to begin and what gemstone to begin with.... Lets start with one of my favourites "Emeralds" "Emeralds! Aren't they divine? Jack gave them to me to shut up about Women's Lib.- Lady Hamilton. 1860 Emeralds are usually bezel set or set with accent stones surrounding them as they are prone to chipping. Most Emeralds are oiled to improve clarity and luster. This treatment is an acceptable industry standard .Combining oiling with any other treatment is considered unacceptable and must be disclosed to the consumer. Heat can damage emeralds, especially by extending existing fractures. Light and chemicals can cause the oils, resins, and polymers used to fill surface-reaching fractures to alter in appearance or deteriorate. Estimates state that 90% or more are fracture filled, by glass, polymers or resins. So how do you care for such a beautiful stone, even if it has been treated? A great majority of fashioned natural emeralds contain filled fractures so it is very risky to clean them ultrasonically, with hot water or steam. Ultrasonic cleaning weakens already-fractured stones while hot water and steam can cause oil or unhardened resin to sweat out of fractures. Using warm, soapy water coupled with gentle scrubbing is the safest way to clean emeralds. You should never wear your Emeralds while cooking, cleaning or gardening. They must never be immersed in harsh chemical cleaners even if it is diluted and never be exposed to high heat. Emeralds should be cleaned gently with a mild detergent solution in warm water and a very soft brush, a worn-out toothbrush is excellent for this. Soak the Emerald in the solution for no more that 10 minutes then use the soft brush to clean the emerald and mounting, rinse under warm clean water and pat dry. Never leave the Emerald immersed in the solution longer than recommended. Cleaning should only be carried out no more that several times a year. If your Emerald requires re-oiling this may be carried out by a qualified jeweler.

16.01.2022 Now back to posting about precious jewellery... have we posted about Diamonds before? Well if we have there is nothing like a refresher about the worlds most desirable of rocks. Did you know that a diamond has not always been the stone given as an engagement ring? It was not until the late 1930's when De Beers entrusted their advertising to Advertising Giant N.W. Ayer who copy wrote the "Diamonds are Forever" Campaign. This campaign was undoubtedly one of the most effective...Continue reading

14.01.2022 How do I care for my Pearls? Pearls are always appropriate - Jackie Kennedy Pearls are probably one of the most delicate of all gemstones as well as being one of the oldest and most prized, they are organic by nature and not a stone or mineral. ... Understanding how pearls are created gives a greater insight into why they need extra care. Simply put a small seed is planted to irritate a pearl mollusk that secretes a substance that then hardens and is called nacre. The thickness of the nacre is dependent on such factors as the type of mollusk, its watery habitat and the time that the mollusk is allowed to defend itself against the irritation. How much the nacre is allowed to thicken determines the luster and durability of the pearl. Dos Wear them as often as you like and with anything you like. Have them restrung periodically as the cord they are restrung on can weaken, stretch and become soiled. You may gently wipe cultured pearls with a slightly damp cloth. Store them separately from other jewellery as the can scratch and become damaged easily. Storing separately in a soft chamois bag is ideal. Note: If by chance your pearls are very dirty a very mild soapy solution can be used, it must be rinsed off and the pearls pated dry with a soft cloth. Donts Never put your pearls on before your makeup, perfume, clothing, etc. Never submerge pearls in liquid. Never leave your pearls under water. Never clean your pearls with solutions that contain ammonia or harsh detergents. Never use abrasive cloths or cleaners. Never under any circumstances put pearl jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner as the vibrations can severely damage the nacre. Remember this adage and they will last for generations "pearls should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off"

13.01.2022 More about Antique Jewellery Care "How do I care for my Precious Coral? That's coral!" she cried in astonishment. "We must be down in the deeps of the sea!"- P.L. Travers, Mary Poppins Coral is like a pearl, and classified as an organicgem material. It is an animal product and not a stone or mineral. The animal is a polyp with an openly odd and complex life cycle. Coral forms large colonies, which sometimes branch out like trees or deer antlers. The animal builds a limesto...ne skeleton from calcium that it purposely extracts from the sea. Precious Coral is exceptionally beautiful but a very soft gem material and must be treated with extra care. Do Not Subject Coral to soaking, ultrasonic cleaning or jewelry dip. Swim, clean, do the dishes, cook or use vinegar when wearing Precious Coral. Note: If you can avoid cleaning, doing the dishes and cooking all the time then frankly do so. Do Adorn yourself with Coral jewelry only after you have put on your make-up, perfume, etc. Clean with a soft clean cloth, and if needs must, Coral may be rinsed in warm soapy water and pat dry with a soft clean cloth. Remove dust with a rubber bulb air puffer. Precious Coral jewelry should be stored in its own soft fabric pouch as it is very susceptible to scratching and damage or wrap individual pieces in tissue paper or it may be placed in its own till in the jewelry box so that its not damaged.

07.01.2022 Its all about Green in 2017 Green is everywhere as it is the most common colour in the natural world and it rates second only to blue in the favorite colour stakes. Pantone, the colour bible, is forecasting Greenery (15-0343) is the colour of 2017. To be seen in all its shades from zesty yellow greens to the deep blue greens of the forest, reconnecting us to nature and instilling in us the notions of peace and rejuvenation while revitalising the human soul. Greenery (15-0...343) is set to embrace interiors, fashion, design and jewellery. Not only is it predicted to make a mark in 2017, it will add zest, vitality and a sense of calm and update any interior or wardrobe. So which gemstones will entice us with their greenish glow and make the grade in 2017? Peridot, Tsavorite Garnet, Australian Chrysoprase and Green Sapphires, Jadeite, Emeralds, Tourmalines, Green Quartzes and Chalcedonies and Aquamarine, the colour that evokes the sea, all promise to enchant us. Diamonds are always in fashion, Apple Green enhanced or natural Green Diamonds, if you are able to find and afford them, will all be in vogue. Every other gemstone is enhanced by pairing with green, including naturals like dendritic quartz and all the subtle colours of pearls. Be bold with rubies and emeralds, pink and green sapphires or a combination of green and orange garnets. The suffragettes had it right wearing peridot and amethyst jewellery, a signifier of their movement and cause. Peridot with diamonds, green sapphires with diamonds and green jadeite with diamonds, as we all know, everything with diamonds works. Boldly and elegantly wear green gems in 2017 to dazzle, attract and calm. Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises.
