03.01.2022 I have a year 11 student who's about to start a chapter on sets and probability. This is an important field for many reasons, and everyone should know about it, but it's also very interesting from a pure maths perspective. Sets, probability and logic are all related, following many of the same rules. Unfortunately the textbook gives the impression that it's all about how to draw Venn diagrams and manipulate the symbols and . Even though sets seem intuitive after doing a f...ew of the exercises, there's a lot more to set theory than what they tell you in the textbook. In yesterday's lesson I explained Russel's paradox and how it completely broke everyone's idea of what a set could be, so mathematicians had to start over again with a brand new theory. I promised next week I'll tell him about the axiom of choice and how you can break a ball into five pieces, and reassemble them into two balls of the same size as the original.
