23.01.2022 Taylor Cooper was born at this important site of the Wanampi Tjukurpa, the Rainbow Serpent or Water Snake Dreaming and the Malara Wanampi is his Tjukurpa totemic ancestor. That Wanampi came from Malara. He went to Kunytjanu near Pipalyatjara. From Kunytjanu, that Wanampi kept walking, walking. He came to Tjuntun (kutjupa - different to Tjuntun at Fregon.) near Watarru. He threw one spear and made that rockhole. 21.01.2022 "Many cultures in the world decorate the human body as a part of festive and ceremonial activities and the torso often becomes the main canvas for colourful and varied patterns and designs. "These designs are on display and they speak strongly of our connection to values and beliefs through colour and design. "When we talk about pots we employ the same terms used to talk about the human body, thereby strengthening our connection with the object. ... "For this exhibition I wanted to make some pieces that held those connections while maintaining the view of a simple pot. They are companionable vessels referencing the body and inviting the viewer to see the pot as the painted body on display in celebration and life." 18.01.2022 Warlayirti Artists and Paul Johnstone Gallery are proud to present: KUWARRITJANULUYA WAKARNINPA A new generation are doing it now Exhibition showing Saturday 4th - Saturday 25th July 2020... Seated in the far reaches of the Kimberley, Wiramanu (Balgo) is flanked by the Great Western and Tanami Deserts. It is the ceremonial hub for several Indigenous clans and is a site for the Luurnpa Tjukurrpa (Kingfisher Dreaming). It is also home to Warlayirti Artists, one of Australia’s leading Indigenous art centres. Established in 1987 Warlayirti Artists quickly became known for its bold and innovative use of colour. Eight different language groups come together to use acrylic on canvas, printmaking and other mediums to tell their cultural stories. Practicing art has become an integral part of Wiramanu life. It allows artists to meet and discuss activities within the communities. It also strengthens ancient narratives and is a vehicle for intergenerational learning. Continuing with the extraordinary legacy of Warlayirti Artists we are proud to present Kuwarritjanuluya Wakarninpa - A new generation are doing it now. While a focus of 'We are Painting For Our Children' is the paintings of the remarkable Tjangili (Tjapakula) George - the Kaltjiti Arts exhibition also shares work from renowned artists such as Witjiti George, Taylor Cooper and Matjangka (Nyukana) Norris. This incredible work by Mrs Norris has hidden depths and designs, telling the story of the monster woman, the Minyma mamu.... ‘As the woman walks through the burnt country, she becomes covered in white ash, jumping about on hot coals with a large, bright red mouth, yelping in pain and scaring everyone. She picks up a stick and dances as she goes. 11.01.2022 PAUL JOHNSTONE GALLERY IN ASSOCIATION WITH PAPUNYA TULA ARTISTS PROUDLY PRESENTS DESERT STORIES: Story: ... noun, plural stories. a description, either true or imagined, of a connected series of events. Stories are the adhesives that bind our lives. Whether it’s the news, tales over dinner or cultural and religious narratives, we are all connected through stories. They provide connections to the familiar, reassurance, or precaution against the unknown; they inform and prepare us for the vast world in which we live. Without stories we have no community structure or no formal recognition of our place within it. The stories that are shared in this exhibition were created thousands of years ago. Important narratives have been carried across time via rock and sand art, body painting, song, dance, carvings and the modern addition of painting on linen and canvas. These ancient narratives assist intergenerational learning and define codes of conduct within specific cultural practices, traditions, languages, laws and family structure. The act of painting these stories nurture relationships and bring community together. Regardless of nationality, regardless of religion, the art of storytelling is a universal must. Moments spent with a stranger, a friend or family member are etched in our memories by the art of storytelling. Stories are central to our existence and our place in the world; they remind us that we are all connected. 10.01.2022 Kaltjiti Arts Nganana paitamilani tjitji tjuta-ku munu Anangu tjuta-ku WE ARE PAINTING FOR OUR CHILDREN Fregon is a small town with a big heart. The rhythm of that heart is undeniably the art centre. Kaltjiti Arts was established in 1961 and in recent years has become a powerhouse in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. Artists such as Witjiti George, Matjangka (Nyukana) Norris and Taylor Cooper are now well established in the Indigenous art market. This exh...ibition will present a selection of outstanding works with a special focus on Tjangili George, whose depictions of desert wildflowers are exquisite. Born in Pukatja (Ernabella) in 1950, Tjangili identifies strongly with the country west of Kaltjiti, her mother’s country that stretches from Irrunytju (Wingellina) south to Watarru. At Pukatja, Tjangili went to school and worked in the craft room, met and married Witjiti George and finally moved to Kaltjiti in the ‘60’s. Tjangili has always worked with Kaltjiti Arts and is a skilled artist in abstract designs from her natural environment. She paints the desert wildflowers, which were abundant in the past; prior to the destructive droughts, buffel grass, camels and donkeys. Tjangili has a gentle and calm nature which is evident in her paintings. Most days she will be found working quietly alongside her husband to produce these breathtakingly beautiful works of art. The exhibition runs from 6 - 29 August
