14.02.2022 I got a chronic case of Workshop Envy after visiting Mark Gilbert’s place several months ago, so in order to somewhat alleviate the cravings, I finally bought myself a professional buffing wheel to polish guitar finishes. It arrived a little damaged, but voiding the warranty by opening it up and reattaching a loose wire soon fixed that, by crikey! First job with the new tool was to polish out a minor discrepancy on the back of this Barron River ukulele, handmade in Cairns.

12.02.2022 My old workbench drawers collapsed, so rather than repair them (again), I have spent quite a bit of time upgrading them with Birch plywood (with marine ply drawer fronts that I had leftover from another job) and full-extension drawer runners. Do you like my drawer handles? I’m not going to tell you how much time I’ve spent on making them and then reorganising and tidying up. Also, everyone’s guitars are going to be ready about 4 days later than I said

25.01.2022 A Maton Flamingo, 1961-65. Ive given it a partial refret and some setup work. Very collectable.

25.01.2022 Does anyone know a Nick McDonald who owns a Conde flamenco guitar? I have a partial phone number that is 1 digit short. If so, please message me or text me his number. Thanks Paul

24.01.2022 I don’t normally post this sort of thing. I’m hoping this will dispel some myths about electric guitar tone. I would perform these experiments myself, if I only had the time https://youtu.be/n02tImce3AE

23.01.2022 They lurk in every attic and every second-hand shop, biding their time... Then they come to me.

23.01.2022 A nice handmade flamenco guitar that has nothing wrong with it whatsoever.... LETS CUT THE HEADSTOCK OFF!!!

23.01.2022 You may remember the handmade flamenco guitar with the headstock that I cut off. Here is the reason why; the owner wanted a more traditional headstock with tuning pegs that operate in a similar way to violins and cellos. However, these new tuners do not have a 1:1 turning ratio like typical wooden pegs. They have an anodised aluminium body with an ebony button and planetary gearing with a 4:1 turning ratio. This gives a finer tuning capability than pegs. Neat, huh? Quite a bit of work was required to achieve all this. And perhaps we shouldnt tell the original maker that we did this, should we?

23.01.2022 No prizes for guessing what the problem is. However, if you have a simple solution, Im all ears. Im going with the stupidly difficult solution... IM GOING TO RIP THE BACK OFF!!!... MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!! See more

22.01.2022 New electric travel guitar with detachable leg rest. Nearly finished.

21.01.2022 A fretboard Im making. Ebony, paua shell and mother of pearl.

21.01.2022 This post is in relation to a previous post regarding a guitar with a serious design flaw. A bit tricky to explain, but here goes...

21.01.2022 I made an electric TRAVEL GUITAR! Its just a prototype based on someone elses design, but pretty cool nevertheless. May also work as a cricket bat, a paddle for a canoe and clobbering-type weapon (needs testing to confirm). Eucalypt body and Rosewood fretboard Gotoh bridge and tuning machines... 25 scale with 12 radius fretboard 24 frets The humbucker was one I had lying around, but it doesnt work properly, which is why it was lying around. No volume or tone controls Bone nut that needs to be black Oil finish See more

20.01.2022 I’ve fallen off the bandwagon and made another wooden skull for no reason except I wanted to and I like them... There! I said it! I regret nothing!... Horizontal Scrub 62mm

20.01.2022 Another little sign for TSI. Blackwood 200 x 120mm

20.01.2022 Electric travel guitar with detachable leg rest (virtually completed). Myrtle 1-piece neck/body , Rosewood fretboard and Blackwood leg-rest bracket 12 radius fretboard, 25 scale length, 24 frets Seymour Duncan pickup Gotoh bridge... Sperzel locking tuners Bone nut No volume or tone controls. The pickup is wired directly to the jack. 820mm long. Under carry on baggage size limit (I think). See more

19.01.2022 Coincidences are often a little too strange... Someone, by chance, thought to ask about a guitar that was completely off topic, to see if I could help with tracing its original maker. There was no info on the internet. The label is moth-eaten, but clearly says Winnaleah Model. The name of the maker is obscured. It was bought at a flea market in California and brought to Queensland where it was purchased by the present owner. I happen to have attended the high school at Wi...nnaleah where I made my first guitar in Grade 9, in 1982, under the supervision of my woodwork teacher, Graeme Briton, who happened to have made a few guitars in his spare time. This was one of his. Curious, no? See more

18.01.2022 The first time I restrung one of these, I grossly underestimated the time I needed to do the job. This time I’m only replacing 9 strings. On a zither of this age with this many strings under constant tension you might expect more warping, but there is surprisingly little. The U.S. MUSIC CO.obviously knew what they were doing...

18.01.2022 Somehow, I managed to make a few presents in amongst the Christmas mayhem. Chopsticks boxes of Horizontal Scrub with sliding lid. Two pairs of chopsticks of Tiger Myrtle and Sheoak.

17.01.2022 My Australian made Tex Morton guitar that I did up recently. After disassembling it to reset the neck, I was amazed to learn it was not made of plywood as I first thought. Its solid throughout, including a Blackwood neck and Red Gum fretboard (stained). Its got new frets, a new truss rod, new strings and a new playable action that it hasnt had for decades. I might also replace the tuning machines down the track. A twangy 1950s tone. Well, I like it anyway... Im not sure what the tune is called. It used to be played on Sesame Street a loooong time ago.

17.01.2022 The new guitar... A simple tune I remembered from classical guitar lessons that I did in 1984 called The Hugh Christie pieces Number 1 or something like that.

17.01.2022 Repairing a break like this is not made easier by the fact that the back of this guitar is laminated. So what to do? We could fix the crack as best we can and leave it as is. The whole back could be replaced. Or we can make a feature out of it. In this case the client has elected to have me inlay his daughters name over the repaired crack. Two inlay jobs in 1 week makes me happy. Send more!

16.01.2022 A new topographical map of Tasmania. The vertical exaggeration is not as extreme as previous incarnations. Huon Pine 257 x 224mm Oil finish 4.5 hours machining

16.01.2022 OK, Im still not entirely sure how the new home confinement rules work, but Im intending to go to work. If you want to collect a finished guitar, thats up to you, I recommend you pay with a card, with EFT or over the phone (that doesnt mean I dont still accept cash (or toilet paper (not really))). If you want to drop off a guitar, I suggest you wait until the plague has abated. If my front door is closed, knock or ring me.... Please keep your visits brief. See you on the other side.

15.01.2022 Something that wont be of interest to most of you, but I thought it was curious. On the left, brass fret wire removed from the neck of a Russian-made 7-string acoustic guitar (note the corrugations on the tang). On the right, 2 lengths of modern, nickel/silver fret wire for comparison. Even the screws on this guitar have threads that are weird. Ill put up a photo of the guitar when Im done.

13.01.2022 It takes a day to make one of these! Worth it though. *shiny*

13.01.2022 Heres something you dont see every day. A Nightingale 7-string acoustic guitar made in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Ive seen balalaikas before, but this is the first guitar Ive seen from Russia. They were not exactly renowned for their guitars (maybe Im wrong?). This one was made in 1961 and sold for 7 1/2 roubles. Ive added a non-adjustable, carbon fibre truss rod, replaced the fretboard, the frets and the nut and fixed a couple of cracks. Note the neck angle adjustment and curiously, the tuning machines work in the opposite direction to what were used to. Sounds good too.

11.01.2022 Not even a full size double bass, but still big enough to fill my entire workshop. On the plus side, it means Im forced to clean my work bench properly for the first time in months. If I can be said to have an area of expertise, this is not it. All Im doing is replacing the unevenly spaced nut, planing flat the bumpy fingerboard and adjusting the action. You know, basic woodwork stuff...

11.01.2022 A new guitar for a new client. Very similar to the last one with some minor cosmetic differences.

11.01.2022 Paul Mineur - Harp Repairer

11.01.2022 I bought a chair! I intend to do it up once I evict any wildlife living in it.

11.01.2022 How awesome is this? Made from a single block of Blackwood by the owners mothers brother (?) and hasnt been played for 50 years. Ill be replacing the jack with one that plugs in and doesnt screw on, checking the wiring and restringing. 770mm long.

11.01.2022 Larger than normal fretboard edge dots for a visually impaired guitar player. Mother of Pearl with Ebony veneer border.

10.01.2022 I’m finding it difficult to get any Tiger Myrtle at the moment. Does anyone know where I might find enough to make an acoustic guitar neck? I need a piece that’s 800 x 75 x 25mm or a shorter piece with additional material to make a heel block. Something matching the photo would be ideal, but I’m not fussy so long as the colour is uniform.

09.01.2022 Something Ive been working on for the last day and a half. A headstock veneer inlay for an archtop guitar Im making alterations to. Its a design based on the Pleiades star cluster. Incidentally, the Japanese call it Subaru. Take a look at the Subaru logo. Ebony White, gold a green mother of pearl Paula shell 200 x 100mm

06.01.2022 It is always a happy day when a new guitar is brought into the world Paul Mineur 1968- Concert size acoustic with falcate bracing Tiger Myrtle back and sides Engelmann spruce top... 06.01.2022 A William MacDonald traditional celtic harp, made on the Isle of Skye (Scotland) with a few cracks that need fixing. Needless to say, Im gonna pull it apart (and erase the name on the front).

06.01.2022 Ill be exhibiting this recently made guitar and others at the Cygnet Folk Festival on Sunday 12th January only. Ya wanna try it out? YES!.... is the correct answer! Come on down to the big tent in the car park on the main road in Cygnet, opposite the town hall. See you there!

05.01.2022 A nearly completed classical guitar made by Chris Vonderborch ( the bridge hasn’t been glued on yet). All I did was spray some lacquer at it. Rosewood back and sides Spruce top with some bear claw figuring Australian Red Cedar neck ... Sheoak fretboard Blackwood binding Red gum headstock veneer See more

05.01.2022 EDIT - SOLD I thought I would give my Facebook likers the opportunity to buy this guitar before I post it on Gumtree Australia in a few hours. $600 including case (not negotiable). ... Below is what I intend use as the item description. Call me. 0419 978 586. Gloss black finish with cream binding and chrome hardware including chromed pick guard and pickup surrounds. Original humbuckers ( as far as I know ) Standard 3-way switch with 2 volume and 2 tone controls. Bone nut. Grover tuning machines. 10-46 strings The serial number and the USED stamp on the back of the headstock seem to indicate this guitar is a factory second. There has been a headstock break that has been professionally repaired (by me). The area has been reinforced and resprayed. The guitar has been left at my workshop by the previous owner for more than 14 months. In order to recoup what Im owed and to declutter my workshop, Im offering this guitar at well below its value. The hard case is in excellent condition, though it has a few scuff marks. The case clips and handle all function properly. One of the clips has a lock for which there IS a key. The guitar is available for viewing during normal business hours Monday to Saturday.

05.01.2022 Discussions with prospective client about ground breaking new guitar design specifically for babies are ongoing... Thats me frantically moving sharp and spiky things out of reach. No babies were harmed in the taking of this photo.

04.01.2022 One of my favouritest things to make is a pretty rosette; provided they work properly and fit properly and generally comply with my completely reasonable demands. However, when they dont.... Ebony, Sycamore, Sheoak, Paua shell (New Zealand abalone) Oh btw, Im making a new guitar.

04.01.2022 Q: What do you do when the plain, black plastic headstock veneer lifts off your Baby Taylor guitar? A:

03.01.2022 Herring bone purfling. A traditional decoration used by Martin guitars and others. This is the first time Ive used it.

02.01.2022 Im not at work today. Ive done me back in. The fact that its my birthday is coincidence. COINCIDENCE, I SAY!... Apologies for any inconvenience.

02.01.2022 Just a random thing I made today with my CNC machine from a design that appealed to me... Macrocarpa. 350 x 350mm

02.01.2022 Some large planks of Blackwood and King William Pine with which I’ll be making a new instrument. One which I have not even considered making before... EDIT - Weston has guessed correctly! I’m making an Autoharp! Should be fun!

01.01.2022 A birthday present I made for my son, Oscar. I know all of you are Dungeons and Dragons fanatics, so I dont need to explain that this is a Dungeon Masters screen, which acts as a curtain to separate the DM from the players and hide relevant data so as not to spoil the story being played out... but you knew that, didnt you? Macrocapra (Monterey Cypress) and Myrtle with iron banding forged in the... forges... of... Mount Siensee Machinato.... 420 x 300mm when closed.

01.01.2022 A brand new Epiphone humming bird acoustic guitar that has nothing wrong with it whatsoever... LETS HACK INTO THE SIDE OF THE NECK!!! MWAHAHAHAAAAAA... ...for a very good reason. My client, who is vision impaired, wants side dots that he can see better. This time, were going for black against the white fretboard binding.

23.12.2021 While this guitar was stored away in a shed, an enterprising young wasp crawled through the output jack and into the cavity beyond, to build a mud nest with sealed cells in which was placed a captive grub. On to the grub, the wasp laid an egg. When the egg hatched the little baby wasp grub found itself in safe and comfortable surroundings and in the company of a playmate, a fresh and edible playmate, who, because it had been paralysed by the adult wasp’s sting, was utterly helpless and unable to scream Nothing like nature to bring about a sense of calm and serenity, don’t you think?

08.12.2021 An inlay I started months ago is finally (mostly) finished. It’s a Tasmanian Azure Kingfisher sitting on the rosette of the autoharp top that I shouldn’t have started yet because it’s 3rd in line of the instruments I’m making. Roughly 3 days work, not including research, design, drawing etc. King William Pine Rosette - Blackwood and Ebony Birdie - Mother of Pearl and reconstituted stone
