18.01.2022 The cost of ego CAN be measured, would you want to know the price of yours? Employees, rent, stock all costs easy enough to add up. Eventually, they all land on a spreadsheet and we either cry tears of joy, or just plain tears, depending on the numbers. But this week I had a conversation with a couple who own a business, now 12 years in. But it’s not their many staff, marketing, SEO, insurance, taxes or drawings that are the big-ticket costs, it’s something much worse. Th...Continue reading

17.01.2022 If your market is noisy, talk where it’s quiet. There’s nobody in business that doesn’t wonder How do we stand out? How do we cut through the noise? And let’s be real, the marketplace IS noisy. And with the internet, it’s only getting noisier. A lot of noise bombarding our senses and if you feel like it’s all just a lot of sugar-coated bullshit, then so does your market. Standing out or cutting through can seem impossible. How can you say anything and not add to the noise? ...Be louder? Spend more on adwords or triple the F/B spend? Or is it more like touting your - Service promises? - Products? - USP’s? Nope, they all impact but they’re not, even combined, enough to help most companies thrive in our modern world of instant options and nigh unlimited consumer choice. If I can outsource you in less than a minute with my mobile, you’re not special. You’re another noisy option vying for my business. If I believe you’re special to me, then I (as the customer) eliminate other options for you. I remove the barriers. I silence the noise. The only thing that makes a difference is to not add to the noise, but to be the only one making a sound (and a good one) to the right market. If you’re the only one talking, then there is no noise. And if you’re saying the right thing the people you need to listen will hear you. But that requires us to do something most find uncomfortable, and that is to decide to truly be unique with our actions, not just with the intent in the business plan. Remember, people WANT to buy good products. Good service. New ideas. They WANT to deal with you, but if you insist on competing. If you insist on shouting louder. If you insist on ‘standing out’, not only will you repel more people than you attract, but you will only add to the noise your market is sick of and worst of all - to your consumer, you will only and forever appear just like everyone else. 14.01.2022 Taking festive time to plan? Are you shitting me? Guys, a quick word about taking time to plan over Xmas. This has 2 angles to it. Firstly, if you’re on holiday, why are you planning how to work? Might as well be at work. Secondly, if your industry is slow and everyone else is slowing down, if at work, why not put your foot down? If you’re a decision maker and target decision makers, take this quick quiz to see if you think you should ‘slow down and plan’. 1. Are you on your ...emails 24/7 regardless of the time of year? 2. Do you check messages daily? 3. Does Xmas cost you a mint every year? 4. Do you work to escape endless Frozen reruns and retail madness? 5. Do you work to get out of the dishes or obligatory family visits? Thought so. Still think your market is absent and this is a good time to ‘slow down and plan’? Here’s an idea, do what you need to do for your business to meet the market needs, all year ‘round. If they’re not being swamped with competition over Xmas, are able to land a message from you and are also likely in need of some kind of professional help, then as a business owners, what plan do you think you should run with? Think outside the square guys. Think of your market. Think of their position, their needs and how you are best placed to help, how do you NEED to be placed to help? I’m not saying cold call on Xmas day flogging cranberry sauce refills. I’m saying, be careful of abandoning the hunt when the food supply hasn’t changed and your competition are all ratarse drunk watching Netflix.
