23.01.2022 Today is Grandparents day and so this week we will be celebrating the valuable contribution that grandparents bring to children. We will be telling stories about all the Nannas, Grandpas, Mimi, Oumas and Poppies in our little circle. I will be telling the story of my Grandad who was a WWII pilot and I can’t wait to add more photos, names and stories
22.01.2022 Last week, Little Miss A found Puff the Magic Dragon in the cubboard, and Little Miss P wanted to listen to the song while colouring in a dragon. The book and the song was incorporated into our mat session and I suspect that it will be requested again at mat time this week! So now, Puff has a home on the tray table!
22.01.2022 For the next couple of weeks we will be focusing a bit on shapes, basic shapes for the little ones and spheres and cubes for the older children. Learning shapes is one of the building blocks for children to learn skills in other areas including reading, math and science and help children identify and organise visual information. We’ll be using rhymes and at mat time the children will be feeding shapes to Shape Monster pictured here Shape Monster, Shape Monster, munch munch munch! Would you like a square for your lunch lunch lunch!?
19.01.2022 Lately we have had quite a few children that has gone to the Zoo with their families and we have had quite a few conversations about animals and insects. There has been some children pointing to an insect they have found in the garden and saying look Paulene, an animal! which scientifically I believe is correct, but in order for us to open up some more conversation around insects and animals, we will be doing a series of small world and intentional teaching setups of animals, insects and eventually something that the children can compare maybe mammals and insects, or wild and domesticated animals. We’ll see where this journey takes us to!
17.01.2022 We will be exploring the ocean for the next couple of weeks with beautiful books to look at, puzzles to build and fishing games to play. Of course we have a beautiful sensory bin too. Later on in the week the children can ‘swim in the ocean’ as they will be joining the fish as little scuba divers - watch tis space!
17.01.2022 You know what's better than saying "this food is good for you"? Tell them what foods do in their body! Why do I keep sharing this message? Because we keep selli...ng our kids short labeling foods and good/bad, healthy/unhealthy. Here are some examples of messages I like for different ages: For 2-3yo kids I usually break it down by color. Although it's not 100% accurate, it’s a good framework to get started. Red: gives you a strong heart Orange: helps you see in the dark Yellow: helps your body heal cuts Green: gives you super powers to fight off sickness Blue and Purple: Give you a strong brain White: gives you energy For 4s and 5s you can start being more specific - like carrots and sweet potatoes help you be able to see in the dark. Clementines help your skin heal cuts. Broccoli helps your night vision, your skin heal, AND your bones be strong. For 4s/5s and 6s you can introduce the idea that some foods do a lot of things in their bodies and some foods do a few things. For 6s and 7s you can introduce the concept of vitamins and minerals - tell them HOW carrots protect their night vision (via vitamin A). Learn about the body. For 8s and 9s - learn even more about different things in foods. And so on. All the while, model the way you want your kids to eat in your home and serve them the balanced diet you want them to eat. That's more powerful than anything you could ever tell them. If you need help getting your child to try new foods, my free child eating guide From Stress to Success - 4 Ways to Help Your Child Eat Better without Losing Your Mind is in my bio @kids.eat.in.color #kidseatincolor See more
16.01.2022 Spring is in the air! Little Mr G helped me pick these flowers and make a pretty arrangement for the children’s table to celebrate the coming of Spring tomorrow
14.01.2022 Some of the children have been showing lots of interest in construction vehicles with their Dads working at the mines. Little Mr C does love his ‘dump trucks’ and tanker trucks. So we will have heaps of books, dress ups, tools and other things to play with. The children will enjoy using little toy hammers and golf tees to hammer holes into a cardboard box and of course we will have the good old sensory bin with mining equipment to go!
11.01.2022 Our new outdoor book corner - yay!
10.01.2022 Next week is NAIDOC week. We have small world play and we will be looking at Aboriginal symbols, Aboriginal art and Australian animals. I hope the children will have as much fun with that small world as I had creating it!
06.01.2022 I was thinking about this place today and with summer coming up, it would be a great day out. Isn’t it amazing and beautiful to watch our children playing with sticks, pebbles, water and leaves! Some of our best memories were made here, the boys loved it, we built boats, dams and bridges. They still talk about it and secretly, they still want to go back!
05.01.2022 Bubble painting! To celebrate spring, the children created these beautiful flowers by blowing into a paint mixture with a straw. It caused lots of wows and giggles, lots of fun, creativity and also a little bit of awareness of how their bodies work and cause and effect! So presenting - our Hydrangeas! (I think they’re called)
05.01.2022 Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing Dads, hope you are being spoilt and enjoying a lovely and relaxing day
02.01.2022 A slightly different take on Mr Potato Head
02.01.2022 Children, of course, get angry, sad, frustrated, nervous, happy or embarrassed, but they often don’t have the words to identity and talk about how they are feeling. For the next few weeks we will be focusing on emotions and kindness. We will be giving feelings names and encourage the children to identify others feelings and talk about their own. We have calming strategy cards to help the children develop the ability to think of ideas of how to help themselves feel better whe...n they are experiencing a big emotion, so we will be talking about the cards and I will encourage them to use the cards if they might need them. We will be reading lots of books, be looking at pictures and play some games and at mat time we will sing ‘if you’re happy and you know it’. I am always fostering the children’s natural kindness, but often they don’t understand when we say ‘be kind please’ so it’s easier for them to develop an understanding when we can ‘catch’ them being kind and say ‘you are being so kind because..’ See more
