25.01.2022 Tomorrow night's Inner West Council meeting will see us discuss the harmonsation of rates across the LGA, which we're required to do before 1 July 2021. I'd strongly encourage you to take a look at the report, as rates are set to rise across the former Marrickville Council area as a result of the merger. At this stage, the decision we need to make is primarily concerned with kicking off the community consultation on the issue, which needs to happen so you can start asking questions of Council. A summary table of some residential impacts is below, and the full report can be viewed here (Item 1): https://innerwest.infocouncil.biz//C_10112020_AGN_3759_AT_
24.01.2022 POP-UP CYCLEWAY: PETERSHAM TO NEWTOWN Residents across the Stanmore (Damun) ward will soon be receiving notification of the new Transport for NSW pop-up cycleway that’ll be built between Petersham and Newtown. This cycleway forms part of the Regional Route 7 (RR7) between Lewisham and Newtown that was publicly exhibited and endorsed by Inner West Council back in 2018.... Because of this, our pop up won’t feature the temporary plastic barricades you may have seen on the first versions installed throughout Sydney when COVID-19 hit. Instead, it’ll be a permanent upgrade that extends over 2.3km and features a range of treatments, including shared paths, on road and bi-directional paths. The pop-up cycleway runs from the intersection of Audley and Trafalgar St in Petersham to Crystal St, York Cr, Gordon Cr, Douglas St, Railway Ave, Baltic St and Albermarle St before connecting to Australia St in Newtown. The route was chosen to connect Petersham and Sydenham Stations with the Newtown retail precinct, and to connect to the newly installed Wilson Street Cycleway to Redfern. In the future, it’ll provide a connection to the GreenWay as part of the broader RR7. For more, see https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au//popup-covid-19-infr/index.html
24.01.2022 Love getting these lovely messages, especially on a Friday Mark from Strategic Cities contacted me on Twitter to ask how he could get a new tree planted in his street, so I directed him to Inner West Council’s easy online request form. Just over a month later, he now has two new trees growing in his Inner West street that will benefit everyone in the years to come ... 23.01.2022 Proud that the motion I tabled last night seeking Inner West Counci endorsement of the #RacismNotWelcome campaign PASSED. I don’t often speak about my own experiences with racism, but I did last night because I wanted people to know why this campaign means so much to me. Here's what I said: As some of you know, I'm an Asian/Australian/British person. I came to Australia as a baby in the late 70s after being born in Indonesia, where my mum is from, and where she and my Austr...alian dad met. That was just a few years after the White Australia Policy had been rolled back, and while places like the Inner West were very multicultural, the area my parents moved to on the Central Coast was not. To this day, the legacy of growing up as one of the only brown kids there is that I don't speak Indonesian, I don't feel a real connection to the culture, I don't have anything of that side of myself to pass to my daughter, because as a child, I didn't want it. I experienced so much racism growing up that all I wanted was to not be different. I'd go to sleep at night as a child wishing I'd wake up in with white skin and blonde hair and blue eyes, because that was the way everyone was ‘supposed’ to look. By the time I hit adulthood, we had Pauline Hanson telling everyone Australia was being swamped by Asians, and my family and I got to experience that backlash all over again. I’m proud of who I am today; I know the colour of my skin and my mixed heritage is a gift. But you don’t ever get over feeling like your own country doesn't want you. That you don’t truly belong anywhere. Those attitudes, of course, have real and dangerous consequences for people of colour across our nation. I commend the Inner Wesr Multicultural Network for developing this important campaign to inspire change. Special to Craig Foster, Kween G and Juliana Jamaluddin for defending the motion last night.
22.01.2022 The CFMEU - Construction & General claims WestConnex workers at the St Peters Interchange may have been exposed to a "toxic cocktail of poisonous chemicals" including asbestos, lead and other carcinogenics, after drilling at the site uncovered a black sludge that "stank" and "ate away at the bottom of their work boots. It follows recent reports in The Sydney Morning Herald about the contaminated and potentially unstable 'park' there, as well as years of concerns raised about the remediation of the notoriously toxic site.

20.01.2022 SUNDAY 11AM: I’ll be joining Newtown resident Laura Ryan for her Sustainable House Day webinar tomorrow as she and her project team take you through how they’re transforming her cottage into a light-filled, off-grid home. Laura’s dubbed her project The ImPossible House due to all the challenges she faces: from lack of space and easy access, to its location in a row of terraces in a heritage conservation area. Her situation is hardly unique, so one of her big aims is to sh...ow how anyone can transform even their inner-city house into a sustainable home - and at the cost of a normal renovation. I’ll be speaking about the role Councils like Inner West Council can play in helping residents live more sustainably, and how to work through planning challenges that can arise. The webinar is being hosted as part of Sustainable House Day 2020, which will be fully online for the first time. 18.01.2022 NEWTOWN TOWN HALL UPGRADE PRIDE CENTRE EOI NNC MOVE Some big developments for the Newtown Town Hall are on the agenda for next week’s Inner West Council meeting. As you may know, Newtown Town Hall is currently home to Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. ... However, the building has a range of issues that require significant and complex remedial work, which can’t take place until the site is vacant. Because of this, the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre will be moving to the Tom Foster Community Centre next year, after it too undergoes some restoration work. This has opened up the opportunity for Council to look at the Newtown Town Hall as a venue for a Pride Centre for our LGBTIQ+ community - a dedicated space that would provide safe and welcoming places to connect, access support services and programs, and more. Council is therefore proposing to launch an expression of interest (EOI) that would offer the opportunity to lease all or part of the newly refurbished site as a Pride Centre, and invite LGBTIQ+ or LGBTIQ-friendly organisations to submit a proposal for management and delivery. Naturally, maintaining community access to key spaces such as the main hall will form part of this. Thoughts? Questions? Let me know.
18.01.2022 It’s a sector worth $112 billion, it’s the heart and soul of this country, essential to our identity, and yet you don’t see that reflected in the public discourse or support for the arts, which is really an engine room of innovation." Via The Sydney Morning Herald.

18.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who got in touch and took part in Inner West Council 's consultation on the Marrickville parklands and golf course. As you may have heard, the 18 hole course will stay. I supported the plan for a 9 hole course and more open space, ecological restoration and sporting areas. However, given the concerns many raised about losing 18 holes, I also tabled an amendment that would have seen Council include the option to design the 9 holes as a reversible course t...o offer variety and the option to play a full 18 holes. Reversible courses do this by allowing you to play their layout two ways. This differs from playing the same 9 holes twice, because depending on which way you’re going, you play a different course. We had the opportunity to do this under the 9 hole plans, as they committed Council to working with a professional golf course designer to create the 9 hole course. Reversible courses aren't new - they go right back to The Old Course at St Andrews - and they've started popping up again as a way of offering unique, challenging and flexible courses in smaller spaces. They also drastically lower maintenance costs. These costs will be more important for Marrickville Golf Club going forward, as their current agreement with Council sees them pay ~$6,000 a year to lease the 21ha site. This includes irrigation from Dibble Ave Waterhole and tree maintenance. Under the plans endorsed last night, the Club will need start funding these after 12 months, and find a new source of water for irrigating the 21ha course. The Club's president also told Council 80% of their income relies on green fees. I do think opening up the space with a truly unique course could have given them an opportunity to diversify this, but it wasn't to be. Anyway - thanks if you made it this far! Here's more on reversible courses from Golf Advisor for those keen.

14.01.2022 More on the St Peters Interchange ’park’ in The Sydney Morning Herald, with City of Sydney writing it off as highly contaminated and not suitable as a recreational area. 13.01.2022 What’s happening in Washington is horrific and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. No one in politics should ever put themselves above democracy. 12.01.2022 Tonight’s Inner West Council meeting will see us kick off the public process for a task all merged Councils are compelled to do by July 2021: harmonising our rates, so that the same structure is used to calculate what's paid across the LGA. As I posted yesterday, the harmonsation will see rates rise across the former Marrickville Council area as rates are redistributed across the merged LGA. The summary table here provides another snapshot of the high-level impacts on reside...ntial rates based on former Council. Tonight’s decision will be mainly about putting the proposed changes out for community engagement, which is critical given we need to make a decision on this in late Feb. 08.01.2022 I spoke to The Sydney Morning Herald about the draft plan of management for the Marrickville Parklands and Golf Course, which will be coming to next week's Inner West Council meeting. It recommends Council reduce the current 18-hole course to a premium 9-hole course, to allow more of the 21ha open space (the largest in the Inner West after Callan Park) to be used for other passive and active recreational activities, improved biodiversity, and so on. As noted in the story, ...the Golf Club says halving of the course will halve their income (though I should note the draft POM commits Council to working with the Club to help it remain financially viable). Labor pollies at local and federal level have come out strongly against the plan, though the party has strongly supported similar plans elsewhere. As I told the SMH, the key question for me is what do we prioritise: golf or the broader community needs? What will deliver the best balance as the Inner West continues to grow, and more of us are turning to our parks and open spaces during COVID and beyond? I know those in favour of the 18 holes say we can do both, and I'm still reading my way through the reports, your emails and consultation responses, and the wider research as to whether this can genuinely occur given the safety issues. As ever, I'm always open to your views. Feel free to DM or email if you'd rather not comment publicly.

07.01.2022 Congratulations to everyone who took the time to make a submission on the changes Transport for NSW was proposing to make in Haberfield, Ashfield and Leichhardt to deal with the increase in traffic caused by WestConnex. These proposals would have flooded local streets with traffic, cut off large areas of these suburbs from each other, caused huge safety issues, and more. As a result, our community swung into action, and sent a staggering 3,400 submissions to TfNSW - 86% of... which were opposed. I’ve been informed by Inner West Council staff that this overwhelming opposition prompted TfNSW to rethink the proposal, and the agency confirmed via email today to those who made submissions that No existing or new proposals will be implemented without further consultation with the community, councils and stakeholders. If you made one of the thousands of submissions - THANK YOU. I’m so pleased your valid concerns have been heard. Special thanks to LAW - Leichhardt Against WestCONnex, Haberfield Association, WestConnex Action Group, the local chambers of commerce, Jamie Parker MP and Council staff for mobilising the community response and advocating so strongly on behalf of our Inner West. : The original proposals put forward by TfNSW in April 2020.
