24.01.2022 Art Farm Artists’ Shabbat ONLINE TONIGHT and FREE Wednesday 13th of May 7.30 - 9.00 pm PETER GRIFFEN CoBrA and the PATHWAYS TO ABSTRACTION... Join us at Art Farm Online tonight when guest artist PETER GRIFFEN shares his insights and experiences into the CoBrA ART MOVEMENT and his own PATHWAYS TO ABSTRACTION ZOOM log in details below The CoBrA Art Movement CoBrA was a European avant-garde movement activefrom 1948 to 1951. The name coined in 1948 byChristian Dotremont evolved from the initials of the members' home cities: Copenhagen (Co), Brussels (Br) and Amsterdam (A). CoBrA artists shared a common desire to break away from existing art movements, including "detested" naturalism and "sterile" abstraction. Their working method was based on spontaneity and experiment, and they drew their inspiration in particular from children’s drawings, from primitive art forms and from the work of Paul Klee and Joan Miró. Core to their work is and a unifying doctrine of complete freedom of colour and form. Peter Griffen Peter Griffen has been painting for over fifty years and is well established as one of Australia’s leading abstract artists. He lives and works in his warehouse studio in the inner west of Sydney and travels throughout Australia and overseas exhibiting and teaching. Peter has had over fifty solo exhibitions in Australia and eleven international exhibitions in London, Paris, St Tropez, Lyon and New Zealand. His participation in group exhibitions is also widespread. His works are held in numerous public and private collections world wide. Peter’s art and art practice is deeply influenced by the CoBrA movement and iconic symbolism derived from the Australian landscape. 15.01.2022 Artists' Shabbat Online Wednesday 16th September - 7.30pm - 9.00pm. MY FAVOURITE ARTIST... A simple one to close out this school term. A chance for you to come and share your love and insights into one artist whose work inspires you. Please come prepared to share who the artist is, why you love their work and something that others might not know about them. To be honest I know I don’t have one artist whose work stands out beyond all others - and if that’s the case for you, simply pick someone or two who inspire you. From the group’s perspective less known artists broaden our perspective, so the less known the better!! Please feel free to share the Zoom link to invite friends and art lovers alike. Looking forward to seeing you tonight for our last hurrah for the term and keen to find out about the artist(s) you love. Happy creating, Paul. Paul Macklin is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. 12.01.2022 @ the edge Art Farm Artists' Shabbat Wednesday 1st July 7.30 - 9.00 pm Zoom details below...... @ the edge is our last Shabbat is this term before school holidays. The theme, exploring that mysterious and at times challenging zone at the edge of our art preferences, understanding and creative comfort zone. All you need to do is bring an example of an artist, art movement or art work that is right at your edge and be prepared to share a little about what makes it edgy for you. (I'll do the tech stuff) This is not about declaring or debating what is or isn't art or about what you do or done like or understand. Rather I'd like our sharing and discussions to explore what happens when you encounter work that pushes your buttons and boundaries and how you can use 'at the edge experiences' to extend your art perspectives and practices. It's been a while since we've had a ' you share' night so I'm really looking forward to having my boundaries stretched and buttons pushed. If you don't want to share that's fine, just come and enjoy the discussions at the edge. See you there!!! 12.01.2022 Artists Drawing - Wednesday 2nd September 7.30 - 9.00pm online. Zoom details below. Following our great Shabbat on drawing last week, this Wednesday we're going to continue our investigation, digging deeper into drawing, artworks derived from drawing and the artists who made them. To be honest last week we barely touched the surface and it was AMAZING!!! Drawing is sometimes seen as the 'lesser of the arts' (in service of painting and sculpture) but as we delved into it we d...iscovered that nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, drawing is often the foundation of investigations and preparatory work for painters, sculptors and designers! But drawing, in its incredibly diverse forms, also stands in its own strength as a primal human endeavour and an incredible mode of creative expression. This week we're looking to you for your insights into the drawings, drawing based artworks and artists that inspire you. So, if you have time to prepare, please come ready to share, a drawing, artist, art practice or movement that gets you excited. I'll take care of the technology; all you need is a name and we'll Google and share screen. As always you are also welcome to simply come and listen and join in the discussion! Artists' Shabbat is a free community service so please invite your art loving friends and creative associates. Artists Drawing - Wednesday 2nd September - 7.30 - 9.00pm online. 10.01.2022 Art Farm Artists’ Shabbat Hans Hoffman - Teacher, Painter and Pioneer Tonight Wednesday 17th June 7.30 9.00pm... Tonight we explore the works and profound impact of Hans Hofmann, German-born American painter, renowned as both an artist, teacher and pioneer infuencer in the American Abstract Expressionist movement. Hoffman’s career spanned two generations and two continents. Growing up in the midst of the European modernist movement he brought to America a deep understanding and synthesis of the works and perspectives of Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Wassily Kandinsky, Sonia and Robert Delaunay and his teaching and subsequent painting had a profound impact on a generation of Abstract Expressionist painters including Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollock, Marc Rothko and many others. Hofmann's stunning works, the bulk of which he painted in the very autumn of his life, are characterized by a rigorous concern with composition, spatial illusion and expressive colour. Artists’ Shabbat is complimentary, our aim is to inform and connect artists and support the art community. Friends and art lovers welcome. 05.01.2022 Artists’ Shabbat Online Wednesday 18th November 7.30 9.00pm Art and the Elements of Design Shape and Space Creative Jigsaws... We’re back this week continuing our series on Art and the Elements of Design. This week we explore Shape and Space with examples from some well known artists like Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Henri Matisse, Mogdiliani, Paul Klee, Hans Hoffman, John Coburn, etc. This week will build on the foundations of Point and Line from our previous Shabbats, but you don’t have to have attended these to get something from or contribut to the discussion. This is a come and share. As usual I’ll kick it off with an intro to the topic and some real world examples, then it’s over to you to bring examples of artists who have used or use shape and space in their work to give it something distinctive. One of the best parts of Shabbat is when you bring artists or artworks to the table that others may not know it’s a great way to extend the boundaries of our knowledge and place some lesser lights up there with the greats. Don't worry if you don't have time to prepare - simply come and listen or join in the chat. I’m really looking forward to continuing this journey; lots to get our collective creative teeth into and, given how feely we tend to interpret the brief and wander off topic, I know it’s going to lead us into rich new realms of understanding.!!! As always Artists’ Shabbat is a complimentary community contribution i.e. it’s FREE. So please pass on the word to your artist friends and invite them to join us on the journey. They can come and share, join the discussion or simply sit and enjoy the rich conversation. I’ve set up a recurring meeting in Zoom and you’ll find the link below. Please find a safe place to store the link and message me if you need to reconnect- I’ll post reminders and the link in our various forums each week along with the weekly topic. 01.01.2022 I'm very excited to have Denise Lithgow as special guest for our 'Art Farm Artists’ Shabbat Online' tonight and even more excited to be able to invite you to join us - it's online and it's free!!! Zoom log in details below. DENISE LITHGOW fabulous felted forms Wednesday 10th June 7.30 - 9.00 pm... log in details below DENISE LITHGOW Denise is one of Australia’s leading textile artists; her sculpted felt vessels, wearable pieces and 2D art works are represented in galleries though out Australia and internationally. Denise exhibits regularly in art prizes, group and solo exhibitions and is a highly sought-after teacher in felt and textile workshops. Denise derives inspiration from the Australian landscape, natural materials and a strong sense of colour and light. The influence of her annual pilgrimage to teach and be inspired by the mountain deserts, gorges, waterholes and unique flora of the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is clearly reflected in her work. Artworks conceived and commenced in the desert are developed and extended in her Leichhardt studio, through eco dying and adding yarns to interweave the feeling, textures and subtle properties of the landscape. Born on a sheep property I’ve grown up with wool, so it is not surprising that felting is the process I use to create my vessels. I use felt as it’s an ecological, sustainable textile and I am completely captivated by the wool’s tactile qualities, rich range of colours and the magical meshing of the fibres, which gives it its manipulative quality. Denise has been a finalist and winner of numerous Australian and International sculpture prizes, most recently including the Australian Artist Textile Awards, Victoria. Her work is regularly represented in prestigious, national and international felt, textile and sculpture publications. We are privileged to have Denise to share with us at our next Artists’ Shabbat and invite you and your friends to join us online through Zoom Art Farm Artists’ Shabbat Online Guest Artist DENISE LITHGOW fabulous felted forms Wednesday 10th June 7.30 - 9.00 pm log in details below Artists’ Shabbat is complimentary, our aim is to inform and connect artists and support the art community.
