17.01.2022 MIRANDA - New 24/7 Veterinary Hospital opens next week. A new state-of-the-art emergency Veterinary Hospital is due to open next week as it brings a Shire first... in convenience to local pet owners. The Advanced Treatment Centre (ATC) is set to become popular among local residents as it helps slash travel times during life threatening situations with it being the only 24 hour basis, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year vet service within the Sutherland Shire and surrounds. The $2.1 million facility will be operated by a well experienced team behind Veterinary Specialists of Sydney (VSOS), a dedicated group of individuals who operate a mobile surgical service throughout the Sydney metropolitan area. Once the doors permanently open from 8am, this Monday 8 June 2020, the facility will offer a variety of services to local pet owners with the most renowned veterinary specialists in Australia available at the Shire's doorstep. The flagship facility will house the latest technology not normally found in local vet hospitals such as an MRI for advanced brain, spinal cord and orthopaedic problems, a CT scanner for bone and lung disease and managing complicated cases along with less invasive equipment such as stents and implants. Fluoroscopy, mobile digital x-ray, endoscopy, ultrasounds and advanced operating theatres will also be ready from the get-go alongside a pharmacy and laboratory. It will be staffed 24/7 by veterinarians and nurses providing intricate care for the furry pets of the Shire with its emergency centre accepting referrals from local smaller hospitals and walk-ins for pets requiring emergency attention such as seizures or motor vehicle related injuries. The hospital will be located at 106 Parraweena Road, Miranda, across from IGA. They can be contacted on (02) 8376 8767 or more information can be found via their website - https://www.vsos.com.au/ Photo | Dr Andrew Levien (left) and Dr Karina Graham (right), owners and directors of the new facility.

11.01.2022 Leptospirosis update 20/08/2019 Unfortunately another dog has died from Leptospirosis at our hospital on the 10th of August. The case was confirmed as a definit...e positive last week and we were able to identify serovar Copenhageni as the strain of Leptospira infecting this dog. Copenhageni is the serovar that we are currently vaccinating dogs for. This case brings the case number up to 7 confirmed cases. Two cases were detected last year and there have been five cases since May this year. Unfortunately all of these dogs have died or required euthanasia due to a poor prognosis. Cases were all confined to Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Redfern and Glebe. Reports of cases from other areas are false. Infection can occur via intact mucus membranes (mouth, nose and eyes) and abraded skin through contact with soil, water or food that have been contaminated with infected rodent urine. Bite wounds from infected rodents and ingestion of infected rodent tissue can also transmit infection. Clinical signs of Leptospirosis can be very vague initially such as lack of appetite, lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Ultimately this can progress to acute kidney failure and liver disease causing jaundice (yellow discoloration of the skin). Therefore, if your dog has been walked in areas of risk or hunts rodents and becomes unwell please seek immediate veterinary attention. The current recommendation is to vaccinate dogs living in areas within a 3km radius around Surry Hills, dogs that go for walks in this area and dogs living in the wider inner west that are known ratters. Two vaccines need to be given 2-4 weeks apart. The current vaccine we are using is covering serovar Copenhageni only. So far we have been able to identify this serovar as the infecting serovar in 2 of the cases and it is unknown if more serovars are involved. Researchers at The University of Sydney are working hard to get further information, investigating all new cases and trying to gather data about the general exposure (seroprevalence) to Leptospira in the Sydney dog population. Therefore we ask all dog owners to please help by allowing your dogs to participate in our research. If you want to help please ask your veterinarian to take a blood and urine sample from your dog before vaccination against Leptospirosis and fill out a questionnaire. All veterinarians in the Sydney area should have received relevant forms. Please also take care of yourself! While no cases of human Leptospirosis have been linked to the current outbreak in dogs, Leptospirosis can affect humans as well! Healthy dogs and cats can shed Leptospira in their urine and are a potential source of infection. Therefore, please avoid contact with urine from your pets, wash your hands after patting them especially before you eat, avoid contact with stagnant water in affected areas and make sure to wash your fruits and vegetables before consuming them.

02.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM SYDNEY VET SPECIALISTS **** In the last 2 weeks we at Sydney Veterinary Emergency & Specialists have seen several cases of young otherwise well ...dogs present with tremors and seizures of varying severity. Some cases have had mild tremors that responded well to conservative management. Other cases have progressed to severe tremors and seizures requiring intensive care for up to 3 to 5 days. One dog has died. These cases have all come from the same area. Specifically, the Rose Bay/Bellevue Hill area pictured in the map attached. The earliest recorded presentation has been on the 21/9/2019 and the latest has been the 2/10/2019. We have identified 5 individual cases of tremors fitting this pattern from this area. Questioning owners has revealed no obvious common link or location all the dogs have frequented, other than they all live in the area pictured. Given this, our current suspicion is a toxic cause. There are many toxins that can cause tremors and seizures in dogs. Some can develop naturally in the environment often in decaying organic material, others are man made and animals can be exposed inadvertently or through deliberate means. At this stage given the location of the cases and the time these cases presented we are concerned about either a toxin located in a public area (natural or introduced) or deliberate baiting with a toxin. Woollahra council, the police and local vet clinics have been informed. Council rangers have inspected the area. Some decaying organic matter has been found on Salisbury Avenue. A sample has been taken for testing and the rest cleaned by the council in case this may be implicated. We recommend taking care when walking dogs in this area and leaving them in front yards unattended. Ensure they are not able to eat anything off the ground on walks or in parks. If your dog is unwell and is showing signs of tremoring, twitching or seizing then please take them to a vet for immediate assessment. If you are concerned your dog comes from this area and has clinical signs consistent with those mentioned above, please also contact Woollahra Council Rangers (9391 7000).
