19.01.2022 NEWS UPDATE: Another fatal dog attack has occurred, this time in Melbourne. This is a word for word repost of the exact same offer Steve makes EVERY TIME there... is a dog attack leading to a fatality. The only thing that has been changed is the victim and council name. Every time one of these tragic and PREVENTABLE attacks occur our response will ALWAYS be the same and we will continue to make the same offer, for anywhere in Australia, that fatal attacks occur. "As many will know, there has a been a horrific dog attack that has resulted in the death of a man and a woman has been left hospitalised due to injuries. I have read a few stories on the matter, these have been written by journalists who I am sure have a thin grasp of the facts. So that said I really dont know what happened and speculation, even by a Behaviour Specialist is useless. So there is a dead man, a family that will never recover and a seized dog. What are we going to do about it? Ok, euthanize the dog? I dont disagree, I dont feel it matters why the attack happened, I think the crime does require the dog to be removed from any possibility of a repeat event. BUT, as usual, no assessment on the dog will be done. So the reason that this happened will be left to speculation of breed blames, or irresponsible owners and other guestimates by arm chair and keyboard experts. Assess the dog! Find out what traits the dog has! Find out what the dogs thresholds and drives are! Is the dog medically sound? The breed is totally irrelevant here. None of these things excuse the behaviour or the outcome and I would not recommend keeping this dog alive, but it would help us understand why, identify to people why and what to look for in their dogs and what to do if they see these behaviours. Governments and Councils react instantly by seizing the dog and euthanizing it but if they are really serious about prevention, they need to assess each dog that attacks a person with any serious intent. I offer my services FREE to Victoria Police and City of Whittlesea, I will travel to Victoria, assess the dog and write a detailed report that they can make public or use to give advice on prevention. What do they have to lose? There will be no cost, I have my own insurance and will sign any waivers for my own safety. It is our responsibility to thoroughly investigate the reasons these events occur. So by all means Vic Pol and Whittlesea, call us (02 45 789 789) and I am willing, experienced and ready to help with this matter at no cost what so ever to anyone. Steve Courtney"

19.01.2022 Most of my clients have met my dog Kaiser who helps me with all sorts of dogs and shows off his Pawfect Manners so beautifully! 3 weeks ago I almost lost him t...o Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV) or bloat. Bloat is when a dogs stomach flips or twists. If not treated immediately a dog will die an excruciatingly painful death. We were on the Murray River near Tocumwal for the Queens Birthday weekend. Kaiser had a few chicken necks around 7pm and had spent the evening lying beside me near the fire. I put him to bed in his crate with some dry food which he ate then decided to let him out to sleep near me. Within 15 minutes of eating he started to pace which I though was him working out where he wanted to sleep. Next thing I hear him trying to vomit so I leapt out of bed and took him outside. I stood by the fire as he continued. It was dark so I couldnt see. I thought he was bringing something up but then as it kept going a massive alarm bell went off in my head and I realised he was in big trouble. Then it became a race to try and find the nearest open vet. It was 12:10am on Monday, Queens Birthday public holiday. Fingers fumbling, trying to google emergency vets, the nearest vet was 15 minutes away but no answer. Next call was to Shepparton Vet Hospital, an hours drive away. Thank goodness the on call vet answered and I bundled him into the car and the race was on. Through fog so thick I couldnt see more than 5 metres in front of me at times, I drove as fast as I could (legally) most of the time, for the longest drive of my life. Kaiser standing on the back seat panting, uncomfortable and in pain. We made it there by 1:30am, twisted stomach confirmed by xray, second vet called in, we prepared him for surgery and I left to room for what seemed liked hours to see if they could save him. The news wasnt good, stomach twisted multiple times, necrotic (black) where the main arteries and vessels were and a very angry spleen. They had untwisted his stomach and the vets words were "its worth a shot", now he had a further 2 hours of surgery to remove his spleen. He made it through the surgery and then it was 24 hours waiting to see his heart would fail, it didnt, then 24 hours of waiting to see if his spleen had sent clots into his blood stream before being removed, it hadnt, then 24 hours waiting to see if his stomach had returned to pink from black, it must have. Then another 10 days before they consider it a success! HE MADE IT I am sharing this with you all so you know what to look for and to understand how serious this is. It is common in medium to large dogs, especially deep chested and increases 4 fold once a dog reaches 8 years of age. I have included a chart for your reference and some photos of my beautiful boy before surgery, a few hours after, coming home (he was so happy, so was I), then him fully recovered. If this prompts just 1 person to get their dog to the vet then it will have been well worth sharing.
