25.01.2022 Another way to look at it.

25.01.2022 What those gold stamps and numbers mean. Is it K or ct or just a 3 digit number? The ct is interchangeable with K for karat. Im from Australia so we use ct like most Commonwealth countries. The term KARAT refers to the fineness of gold. The word CARAT usually refers to a weight, generally for gemstones but is also used for gold. All a bit confusing, but both are OK to use. The number refers to the fineness of gold in parts per 1000. All these marks are acceptable as it... depends on where it was made. There are many carats used in jewellery. Below are the most common 8K, 8ct or 333 (parts per 1000) or is 33.3% gold (usually European. Not recognized in USA. The lowest possible standard. Will tarnish sometimes) 9K, 9ct or 375 (parts per 1000) or is 37.5% gold (mainly British Commonwealth countries. Not recognized in USA. Hard wearing.) 10K, 10ct or 416 (parts per 1000) or is 41.6% gold (Minimum USA standard. Hard wearing.) 12K, 12ct or 500 (parts per 1000) or is 50% gold (usually old watch cases. Rarely seen) 14K, 14ct or 585 (parts per 1000) or 58.5% gold (Asian for overseas market. Common in USA. Russian 584.) 15K, 15ct or 625 (parts per 1000) or 62.5 % gold (British Commonwealth countries. Discontinued c1935. A good indicator that the piece is old.) 18K, 18ct or 750 (parts per 1000) or 75% gold. (Most quality pieces are 18ct. Minimum gold standard for sale in Italy.) 22K, 22ct or 916 (parts per 1000) or 91.6% gold (mainly Asia, Middle East. Very soft. Very yellow) 24K, 24ct or 1000 (parts per 1000) or PURE gold (too soft for most jewellery manufacture) Rarely you may see something different. The odd ones can be easily be calculated using following... 1 karat gold is 1 part in 24 gold. So for instance 22ct or 22K is 22 parts in 24 of pure gold or 22/24ths or if you multiply 22/24 X 1000 you get 916 (916 parts per 1000) or 91.6% gold. If you see a number, for example 625, divide it by 1000 and multiply by 24, it will give you the carat. 625 / 1000 x 24 = 15ct. Gold comes in many colours depending on the other metals used in the alloy. The carat does NOT change because of the colour. The amount of gold is the same. White, Rose and other are just variations in colour. ALL gold is stamped or hallmarked with its quality when it is made as required by that countries government, however its not unusual to find that marks can be lost through wear or repair. If you are buying an unmarked piece of gold make sure you get an unconditional money back guarantee from the seller as to gold carat or the piece. Then have it checked. When looking for gold hallmarks make sure that certain marks are NOT on the piece. Things like EP, GP, HGP, (Electroplate, gold plate, hard gold plate ) and rolled. As the names might suggest, these are NOT solid gold. A few other numbers to avoid, unless you are into silver, are 800, 925, 950 as these are all silver or platinum marks. 2018 Edward Vabolis

23.01.2022 Here is a very heavy duty blog and I won't blame you if you don't read it...but some may find it interesting. This was an assignment I did for my Year 2 Theory in Gemmology (GAA). It seems a shame to waste it so for your interest and education I thought you might like a read...THE CAUSE OF COLOUR IN GEMS. At first glance the thing you notice about a gem is its colour then other things become apparent. Its sparkle, sheen, lustre, clarity also come into playall producing a sy...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Here's another blog on Jewellery. Gold...Solid, Filled, Rolled, Plated...what do they all mean. There seems to be a lot of confusion about what various forms of plating and marks actually mean. These terms are used by many without a real understanding of what they actually mean....Continue reading

17.01.2022 I will be posting up a few 'blogs' or 'guides' that I used to have on eBay...here's the first one. A few trivial & fun facts about GOLD. This guide is not so much about knowledge, rather its about a few little known facts and trivia about gold something to bring up at a dinner party. For instance did you know that. ALL the gold ever mined would fill a cube approx. 20 mtrs x 20 mtrs x 20 mtrs. ... One ounce of gold measures about 12mm x 12mm x 12mm or x 1/2' x 1/2 x 1/2 inch. Tiny for the weight. It is 19 times heavier than water. Lead is 11 times heavier than water. A cubic foot of gold weighs about 1/2 ton. Just think about that for a moment. Thats the size of a ruler, cubed. It is the 58th most abundant element on the Earth out of the 92 natural elements found. 1 ounce (31.1gms) of gold can be drawn into a wire 5 miles, thats about 8 kilometrers. You can beat 1 ounce of gold to a sheet of over 160 square feet and that light would shine through that sheet. 1 gram can be flattened into a sheet 1 meter square. That sheet of gold would be one hundred thousandth of an inch thick. Historically a carat was a measure of weight based on the weigh of a carob seed which in nature has a very consistent weight. It has been estimated that 75% of the total historical world production of gold has happened after 1910. The word gold comes from the old English word geolu or gelo meaning yellow. Chemically gold is almost chemically inert and is called a Noble Metal because of that fact. Very few chemicals can attack it, so thats why it keeps it shine even when buried for 1000s of years. Aqua Regis (Kings water) is an acid that will dissolve it. It is a mixture of concentrated Nitric and Hydrochloric Acids. There are a few Cyanide compounds that will also dissolve it and are used in gold refining. Trust me, you dont want to go near either. Because of it colouring effect it is used to colour glass. Those lovely Ruby and Cranberry glass items you see owe their beautiful red to minute amounts of dissolved gold. Yellow gold (eg 9K or 18K)produced using silver, copper, zinc & others Rose goldproduced using more copper and others White goldproduced using mainly nickel or palladium and or zinc, & others Green goldproduced using more zinc & others Blue goldproduced using iron & others Purple goldproduced by using aluminium & others The largest gold nugget known to be found was called The Welcome Stranger. Found in Dunolly, Victoria, Australia, weighed a massive 2280 troy ounces or 70 kilograms. The largest gold nugget still in existence is The Hand of Faith also found near Dunolly. It weighs 875 troy ounces or over 27 kilograms. It is also the largest nugget ever found with a metal detector. Just imagine hearing your detector go of, digging down and finding that baby. 2018 Edward Vabolis

13.01.2022 Do you have any idea of what the value of gold really is? I came up with this when I was lecturing Gemmology so people could get an idea of how valuable gold really is.... So let's start with an common empty can of drink, coke, beer or any other beverage. What do you think that can filled with pure gold is worth? Common drink cans usually hold 335cc of liquid which for our purposes is really water and weighs 335 grams. (1cc = 1gm)... Gold has a specific gravity of 19.32 which means its 19.32 times heavier than water. So now we fill that drink can with pure gold. It now weighs 335gms x 19.32 which is 6472.2gms or 6.47 kilograms. Heavy, isnt it? Bear with me. The price of gold varies from day to day but lets says for arguments sake its roughly AU$1600 a troy ounce. There are ~31 grams to the ounce so 1 gram of gold is very roughly $50 a gram. (At the time I'm writing this it is more) Now comes the interesting part...what was your guess? 6472gms x $50 is approximately $323,600, so 3 cans of pure gold is about worth about a $1,000,000. That should put things into perspective. Edward Vabolis 2018 See more

07.01.2022 As promised I'm adding another 'blog' or 'guide' that used to be on eBay....A short word on the cleaning and polishing of gold jewellery. This is about solid gold and gemstone jewellery, not plated or costume pieces. It always amazes me how many people do not clean and polish their jewellery. As you wear your valuable pieces they accumulate dirt, dust and oils. Those fabulous gems get a coating on them, changing the way light behaves, dulling the sparkle and colour MOST mar...Continue reading

04.01.2022 A sad fact of life...the rich get richer and the poor... Over 35 years in the second-hand business has taught me many things. One of those strange lessons is that the more expensive the second-hand item is the bigger the saving. ... You sayIts obviousthe larger the spend, the bigger the dollar amount saved. Actually there is even a much larger saving to be had. Yes the dollars are bigger BUT even more importantthe percentage saving is much, much bigger. Consider this. Something retails for $200 and lots of people desire it. Its in great condition, near new, you really want it. How much are you going to pay? $150 or there abouts might seem reasonable. Noticeits cheap, affordable to MANY people who want it so a 25% saving might seem good value. Consider this. Something retails for $20,000 and lots of people desire it. Its in great condition, near new, you really want it. How much are you going to pay? Well the question boils down to, what can you afford to pay? The fact is that the selling price of this item is most likely not going to be $15,000, a 25% saving, but a lot less because there are far less people competing for it, far far less who can afford such a luxury. In some circumstances its almost a buyers market. My experience in the secondary market is that the more expensive the item, the lower the second-hand price relative to new. The biggest second-hand bargains are some of the most expensive. Fair?..... Cest la vie
