16.01.2022 Yesterday was a sad day. Yesterday, my beautiful lovely, sweet, gentle 7 year old chocolate labrador died in my arms. He was broken from the day we picked h...im up from what we now believe to have been a puppy farm set up - we just didnt know it then. Despite his medical problems both mental and physical we happily loved him with all our being. Today our hearts are breaking over his premature death, but more than that, today our hearts are burning with anger over the greedy, unscrupulous, bastards out there that think its okay to use and abuse animals just to line their own pockets. Shadow wasnt a breeding dog he was one of the puppys, and we got him when he was 10wks old (but in hindsight probably much younger) We were naive and hadnt really heard of puppy farming and therefore perfect victims. I now know all the warning signs were there but I didnt know to look - this is why I want to educate people about them now. Shadow was broken probably through his mum being repeatedly interbred, through being mistreated the short few weeks after he was born, and through being taken from his mother far too soon. We named him shadow because he was terrified of literally everything - even his own shadow, and because he became my shadow, never ever letting me out of his sight. He lived his life in fear - even leaving a bag out on the table would have him freeze in his tracks and having a melt down. In anyone elses eyes he was probably severely brain damaged - in my eyes he was just special and needed a little bit more love than anyone else ~ which we happily gave him. As I kissed my beautiful boy goodbye I made a promise to him that I would do everything in my power to raise awareness regarding the cruelty behind puppy farming. Also the methods used include the use of force which is masquerading as mild correction. The fear in at least one of the dogs is clear to see and the owner calls it subservience. 04.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM SYDNEY VET SPECIALISTS **** In the last 2 weeks we at Sydney Veterinary Emergency & Specialists have seen several cases of young otherwise well ...dogs present with tremors and seizures of varying severity. Some cases have had mild tremors that responded well to conservative management. Other cases have progressed to severe tremors and seizures requiring intensive care for up to 3 to 5 days. One dog has died. These cases have all come from the same area. Specifically, the Rose Bay/Bellevue Hill area pictured in the map attached. The earliest recorded presentation has been on the 21/9/2019 and the latest has been the 2/10/2019. We have identified 5 individual cases of tremors fitting this pattern from this area. Questioning owners has revealed no obvious common link or location all the dogs have frequented, other than they all live in the area pictured. Given this, our current suspicion is a toxic cause. There are many toxins that can cause tremors and seizures in dogs. Some can develop naturally in the environment often in decaying organic material, others are man made and animals can be exposed inadvertently or through deliberate means. At this stage given the location of the cases and the time these cases presented we are concerned about either a toxin located in a public area (natural or introduced) or deliberate baiting with a toxin. Woollahra council, the police and local vet clinics have been informed. Council rangers have inspected the area. Some decaying organic matter has been found on Salisbury Avenue. A sample has been taken for testing and the rest cleaned by the council in case this may be implicated. We recommend taking care when walking dogs in this area and leaving them in front yards unattended. Ensure they are not able to eat anything off the ground on walks or in parks. If your dog is unwell and is showing signs of tremoring, twitching or seizing then please take them to a vet for immediate assessment. If you are concerned your dog comes from this area and has clinical signs consistent with those mentioned above, please also contact Woollahra Council Rangers (9391 7000).
