01.01.2022 Every dog has its day! Dogs can be a polarising issue in the conservation world and in the bird world especially! Unfortunately, when dogs and birds collide ... especially on Australia’s beaches it can often be a recipe for disaster. But there’s another side to the story, too! The Maremma Sheepdogs that guard vulnerable breeding colonies of Little Penguins and Australasian Gannets on Victoria’s south-western coast are national treasures, but the use of conservation detector dogs in Australia is also on the rise and now, they’re being trained to locate threatened bird species. These dogs are painstakingly taught to detect an odour specific to the target bird from the scent of their plumage, to the smell of their droppings or pellets and even their eggs! Most importantly, they’re also trained not to touch any birds they locate, but point them out to their handlers. Conservation detector dogs have helped detect everything from Gould’s Petrels off the NSW coast to Masked Owls high in tree hollows; from ground-dwelling Eastern Bristlebirds and notoriously cryptic Plains-Wanderers to Little Penguins nesting deep in burrows. By using dogs in their conservation work, it’s estimated that researchers can increase the accuracy of wildlife censuses by 30 per cent or more.
