24.01.2022 If you prefer typing to writing or drawing, you can use the text tool to make comments on the webpage. The text tool is a little different from the pen and highlighter tools: Instead of letting you put text wherever you want on the page, this tool lets you drop a comment pin and type text in a corresponding text box on the right side of the page. You can minimize the text box (the pin will remain visible) for less clutter. When you select the text tool, your pointer will turn... into a cross-hair. Click anywhere on the page to drop a comment pin. The pin will appear where you click, and a thin line will connect it to a corresponding text box on the right side of the page. Click inside the text box to type your comment. To minimize the box, you can either click the minus sign in the upper right corner of the box, or you can click the corresponding comment pin. To delete both the comment pin and the text box, click the trash can icon in the lower right corner of the text box. The clipping tool will also turn your cursor into a cross-hair, so you can clip out a section of the page. It works similar to the Snipping Tool -- click the clipping tool icon, and the page will fade out until you select a section of it. Once you have a section selected, you'll see a small copy icon in the lower right corner; click this to copy your clip (you can paste it into another program, such as Microsoft Paint, if you want to save it). Don't make any mistakes As of right now, the eraser tool doesn't do much. If you click on it, nothing happens. If you click on it again, a "Clear All" box appears, which you can click to clear the Web page of annotations. I assume the eraser tool will be fixed before Project Spartan goes public, because right now there's no way to fix an annotation mistake without clearing the entire page and starting over.

22.01.2022 Think fast: What type of graphics card do you have? How much hard-drive space is free on your work laptop? How fast is your processor? The average person probably doesn't know the answers to these questions off the top of his or her head -- and that makes sense. But if you're looking to upgrade, or you're trying to troubleshoot a hardware issue, knowing your computer's specs is kind of a necessity. So here's how to find your PC's basic specs in Windows 8:... Processor, memory and operating system To find your PC's basic specs, you'll want to open up the System panel. There are a few ways to do this: Open the Charms bar, click Settings, and then click PC info. This will open up the System panel. In the System panel, you'll be able to see what type of processor you have, how much installed memory (RAM) you have, and what type of system you have (32-bit or 64-bit). At the top of the screen, you'll also see what edition of Windows you're running, and at the bottom of the screen, you'll see your computer's name (how it appears on networks). You can also access the System panel by opening the Control Panel (Charms bar > Settings > Control Panel) and clicking System. Graphics card To find out what type of graphics card you have -- or if you even have a graphics card -- look to the left-side menu in the System panel. At the top of the menu, you'll see a link to Device Manager. Click this link to open the Device Manager. The Device Manager lists all of your devices (including batteries, hard drives, input devices, and graphics cards). To find your graphics card, click Display adapters. You'll see all of your installed graphics cards -- including your motherboard's integrated graphics. To see more details about a graphics card, right-click it, click Properties and then click the Details tab. Do you have a hard drive, a solid-state drive, or both? To find out what type of storage you have on your PC, open the Charms bar, click Search and type Optimize. The option to Defragment and optimize your drives will appear -- click this to open the Optimize Drives tool. This tool will show you how many drives you have (partitions will appear as separate drives), and what type of drives they are. To find out how much space is available on a particular drive, open the Charms bar, click Search and type This PC. When This PC appears, click it to open Windows Explorer. Under Devices and drives, you'll see a list of your drives, along with Total Size and Free Space.

21.01.2022 MORE CHANGES FOR KEYBOARDS LENOVOS YOGA BOOK HAS A VIRTUAL KEYBOARD ON A TOUCH PANEL. We saw some interesting changes to keyboards this year: Apple added the Touch Bar, while Lenovo swapped out the hard keyboard for a virtual keyboard on a touch input panel for its Yoga Book. Lenovo wants to bring the virtual keyboard to more Chromebooks and 2-in-1s, partly because of its versatility. The touch input panel can also be used to draw or take notes with a stylus. Its a toss-up: Lenovo believes that those used to typing on mobile devices will adapt to this touch panel keyboard quickly, while hard keyboard diehards will dismiss the idea.

20.01.2022 Security research firm Cylance says it's found a vulnerability in Windows that could let hackers steal user names and passwords, but Microsoft isn't so sure it's worth focusing on. Any Windows PC, tablet or server running Windows 8.1 or earlier -- and even devices running the as-yet-released Windows 10 -- is subject to a vulnerability Cylance reported on its blog on Monday. The company, which dubbed the attack "Redirect to SMB," says the vulnerability relates to a similar fla...w first discovered in Windows in 1997 by researcher Aaron Spangler that caused Windows to automatically provide a user's Windows username and password to what it thought was a server. Cylance says the issue was never patched by Microsoft. At the heart of the new attack is SMB, or server message block. SMB is a protocol that allows for file sharing over a network. In Windows, SMB is often used by companies to share files from a server across an entire company network. According to Cylance, a "Redirect to SMB" attack requires that a victim either input a URL with the word "file://" followed by a URL or click on a malicious link. Because of the flaw, Windows assumes the image link is an attempt by the user to gain access to a file on a server and automatically provides the user's credentials. Once hackers obtain the credentials, they'll find that the passwords are encrypted. However, Cylance says that a person who has a higher-end graphics processing unit "could crack any 8-character password consisting of letters (upper and lower case) as well as numbers in less than half a day." There's debate, however, over whether the flaw is as serious as Cylance argues. This issue has been known for several years and Microsoft provided guidance on how to protect oneself from the feature in 2009 in two separate security advisories. On Monday, Microsoft downplayed the Cylance "discovery" saying that it wasn't new at all and the chances of falling victim to the attack are slim. "We don't agree with Cylance's claims of a new attack type. Cybercriminals continue to be engaged in a number of nefarious tactics," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "However, several factors would need to come together for this type of cyberattack to work, such as success in luring a person to enter information into a fake website. We encourage people to avoid opening links in emails from senders that they don't recognize or visiting unsecure sites." Cylance reported that it has discovered 31 programs that are vulnerable to the flaw, including Internet Explorer and Excel 2010. The company also discovered that Adobe Reader, Apple QuickTime and Symantec's Norton Security Scan can also fall victim to the attack. Carnegie Mellon University, which also outlined the flaw on Monday after discovering it for itself, said that most applications that go out on the Internet to check for software updates, for instance, are subject to the flaw.

13.01.2022 IT turns out Google is making people think they are smarter than they actually are. That is the finding of a new study from Yale University aimed at gauging the psychological impact of searching on the internet. The internet is such a powerful environment, where you can enter any question, and you basically have access to the worlds knowledge at your fingertip, lead researcher Matthew Fisher told the Telegraph.... It becomes easier to confuse your own knowledge with this external source. When people are truly on their own, they may be wildly inaccurate about how much they know and how dependent they are on the internet. For one aspect of the study, 1000 students were split into two groups and were then asked how a zipper works. The first group was given a website link containing the answer, while the other was given a printout of the same information as a control. Both groups were later quizzed later on why cloudy nights are warmer, however none of the participants were given the answer. When asked confidence in knowing the answer, it was found the group who had previously searched online believed they were more knowledgeable. Researches said the study showed that the cognitive effects of using search engines are so powerful that people still feel smarter even when they didnt have access to the internet. In cases where decisions have big consequences, it could be important for people to distinguish their own knowledge and not assume they know something when they actually dont, he said. The internet is an enormous benefit in countless ways, but there may be some trade-offs that arent immediately obvious and this may be one of them. Accurate personal knowledge is difficult to achieve, and the internet may be making that task even harder. The study was published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology

04.01.2022 Build 10049 of the Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview just dropped, and with it comes Microsoft's sexy, speedy new browser: Project Spartan. The next-gen browser has several new features to try out, including a distraction-free reading view and a fast, secure rendering engine (which was available as an experimental feature in Build 9926). But the coolest new feature is inking -- the ability to draw, write on, and generally mark up Web pages from directly within the browser. You... can share your marked-up creations via email or through social networks, or you can save them to OneNote. Start inking When you see a Web page you want to "ink," click the small icon that looks like a pen and paper in the upper right corner of the browser window. There are only about five icons total, so this shouldn't be too difficult to find. drawing-tools.png These are your markup tools. Screenshot by Sarah Jacobsson Purewal/CNET The Web page will refresh and the inking toolbar will appear over the regular toolbar. On the left side of the inking toolbar, you'll see five icons: Pen, highlighter, eraser, text, and clip. The pen tool is selected by default, so you can just start scribbling away if you'd like (in medium thickness, light blue ink). If you want to change the color of your pen, click the pen icon to choose from 12 colors and three sizes. To use a highlighter, which will let you highlight text and images instead of drawing over them, click the highlighter button. Click the highlighter button a second time to select your highlighter color and shape (six colors, three shapes).

02.01.2022 BLUETOOTH 5 WILL TAKE CHARGE THE BLUETOOTH LOGO. Laptops and 2-in-1s will be equipped with the latest Bluetooth 5 wireless specification, which is a longer and faster upgrade to the aging Bluetooth 4.2. Bluetooth 5 will allow PCs to communicate wirelessly with devices up to 400 meters away in clear line of sight, but a more reasonable range is about 120 meters, according to analysts. Bluetooth 5 will transfer data at speeds of up to 2Mbps, which is two times faster than its predecessor.

01.01.2022 NEW STORAGE AND MEMORY TECHNOLOGIES 3D XPOINT IS THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND OPTANE PRODUCTS. Intels Optane, a superfast SSD and DRAM replacement that could ultimately unify memory and storage, could cause a radical change in PC architecture. But that wont happen for a few years, and the initial expectations for Optane are modest. The first Optane SSDs will be in enthusiast PCs, and could cost a small fortune. Optane SSDs have been measured as being 10 times faster than conventio...nal SSDs. Over time, Optane could replace DRAM DIMMs, with the added advantage of being able to store data. The SSDs wont be in laptops next year as the technologys uses are still being explored. Optane is based on a technology called 3D Xpoint, which Intel co-developed with Micron. SSDs based on Microns 3D XPoint technology will ship next year under the QuantX brand. See more
