06.01.2022 COVID-19 is not going away anytime soon and we need to remain vigilant. We need to keep our quarantine measures strong. We can’t be complacent. While WA has had... no community spread for more than six months, the Chief Health Officer has made it clear the risks around us pose a serious threat to our State, as do the border controls of some other States. You just need to look around the world, and see new harsh restrictions being imposed in many countries, to try limit a deadly second or third wave. Western Australia is one of the most free societies in the world, but it does mean we are more susceptible to a serious outbreak. For this reason, based on the health advice, we will need to extend Phase 4 of the COVID-19 roadmap. HOWEVER there will be an important modification to the 2 square metre rule for some venues. The openness of Phase 4 has been integral in our State’s economic recovery, and has kept us safe and strong. However, Western Australia remains more susceptible to a major outbreak should COVID-19 reach our State, given nearly all physical distancing and gatherings restrictions have been removed. An outbreak in our community would more than likely result in new restrictions being imposed. As a Government, together with the Chief Health Officer, we will continue to review these arrangements to determine if COVID-safe solutions are possible in the future. Though Phase 4 will be extended, the following change will come into effect starting this weekend: Effective from Saturday, October 24, selected venues that predominantly hold seated events will be exempt from the 2 square metre rule. They will be permitted to reach up to 60 per cent of their usual maximum capacity for seated and ticketed performances. These venues include: theatres, concert halls, auditoriums, amphitheatres, cinemas, comedy lounges, and performing arts centres. These venues have been deemed ‘low risk’ by the Chief Health Officer, as they are seated and ticketed. This modification to Phase 4 will provide these venues and industries particularly culture and the arts the opportunity to function in a COVID-safe way, without being disproportionally impacted by the 2 square metre rule. I understand many people will welcome this news today, but I also recognise that the 2 square metre rule does act as an impediment to some other sectors. We will continue to review these restrictions to determine if COVID-safe solutions are possible in the future, based on health advice. The Chief Health Officer has recommended a further two months be considered for Phase 4’s modified measures. However, no new tentative date will be set for Phase 5 at this point, based on the health advice and due to WA’s current strong health and economic standing. The State Government will continue to review up-to-date health advice and provide an updated roadmap for WA, when the health advice allows. It is my intention for this roadmap to include details about the future of our hard border again, only if the health advice allows at that point in time. We’ve come so far, so it’s more important than ever that we don’t get complacent and take a risk we will all regret. I will always be guided by the health advice - a cautious approach is the only sensible way forward when dealing with this devastating virus. I will not unnecessarily compromise the success we have had in controlling the introduction of COVID-19 into WA. Western Australia continues to lead the nation in our recovery from COVID-19, and the community’s response has helped keep WA safe and strong.
