25.01.2022 From lockdown to lighting up the barbie! These wonderful young mums are Mel and Ash McGrath. Their respective fathers-in-law are brothers who have battled prostate cancer, prompting Mel and Ash to form a team raising funds for our work. Mel did 261k pushing her 2 babies Will and Teddy in the pram during lockdown in Melbourne for The Long Run - an AMAZING achievement - while Ash walked and ran the streets of Wagga with 8 month old Maggie in the pram, 8 year old Ava by her s...ide, and 4 year old Ollie riding his bike. A huge family effort for the cause! Better still, they’ve just signed up for Big Aussie Barbie and will be going virtual this November for two dads who are dearly loved. Thank you to the whole family!!! https://www.bigaussiebarbie.com.au

24.01.2022 Introducing Ross Campbell. I was diagnosed in 2013 with a Gleason Score of 6 and had a prostatectomy in May of that year. I was fortunate to have a great GP, who picked it up early. I was one of the lucky ones, and really got the benefits of research and support. Today my PSA level is undetectable. It was a life-changing diagnosis, and prompted me to get involved in supporting other blokes who have been impacted, through a local exercise group which we hope to take national.... In this photo Im off to catch Western Rock Lobster. I take each day as it comes and draw strength from a strong network of men who have been through the same. Ross and his Prost! team have together raised nearly $10k towards our current total of over $900k to support Australian men and families who are facing prostate cancer. Rule #1 of The Long Run: Nobody here walks alone https://www.thelongrun.org.au Lets KEEP IT GOING.

23.01.2022 Meet Don, a champion in The Long Run. I am an 89 year young/old prostate cancer survivor. I had no symptoms when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in March 2004, which was of no surprise to me, as my mother had breast cancer and my father had prostate cancer. For various reasons, I chose radiation and spent 2 months in Adelaide during treatment at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. I was very lucky as I did not have any bowel or urinary problems, nor any follow-up treatment! A...s to be expected, I did go through several years of sexual dysfunction, but OK now. Its important to talk about it! Don speaks for all of us, and its a cracking message to share! Youre never too old and its never too late - join now! https://www.thelongrun.org.au/

21.01.2022 Tonight were giving a shout out to David LEstrange, who is Top 10 on our Long Run Leaderboard. My uncle has been battling prostate cancer for a number of years. Ive seen how it creates a roller coaster of anxiety for the whole family, with endless appointments and waiting on test results. Despite it all, he continues to make us laugh. As much as this horrible disease gives men a battle for their lives, in battle you witness the strength and courage of the human spirit.... You sure do. Tomorrow is dollar match day - Tyrepower and ATOM Community Fund will match your donations dollar for dollar, up to the value of $50,000. Please join us in the morning to get the ball rolling and double your impact for Australian men and families facing prostate cancer! https://www.thelongrun.org.au
21.01.2022 This is Steves story. He first noticed symptoms in December 2017, at the cricket in Adelaide. It had been 27 hours and he was unable to go to the bathroom. He ended up in Emergency, where scans revealed an enlarged prostate. He was given tablets to alleviate the pain, but more tests and a biopsy confirmed prostate cancer. He underwent surgery and radiation. This time last year, his PSA was zero. Unfortunately the cancer has come back. ... Steve says, Its not what it does to you when you get it, its the after thats no good it changes your life completely. Men out there, talk to your GP. And if youre struggling, talk about it. After missing his cricket grand final because of surgery, his teammates turned up to surprise him. Were proud to have Steve and the team in The Long Run, to help Australian men and families who are struggling too. Steve, well keep batting for you until we beat this. You can show your support here https://www.thelongrun.org.au

18.01.2022 This is Sophie with her dad. My hero, my father, passed away from prostate cancer this year. He was only 69 years old and had so much more to give. He grew up in country Victoria but spent all his adult life in Melbourne, working hard in his own business, raising five children (two sets of twins) and living life to the full - water skiing, riding dirt bikes, snow skiing, bush walking, four-wheel driving, traveling Victoria and the world. He was the most unassuming, gentle, k...nowledgeable, generous, and practical man I have ever known. He was loyal, he was loved, and he was always honest. I want to find a cure for this disease, I want to help the amazing doctors and nurses who tried so hard to help my dad fight this cancer, I want to help stop this disease taking away our fathers, brothers, sons, and grandfathers. We want that too Sophie. People - lets make it happen https://www.thelongrun.org.au

Despite now being paralyzed due to spinal cord compression from the metastatic cancer, he continues to fight. With her dad in hospital, shes set her challenge at 67kms for The Long Run - running or walking 1km for every year of life A...ngelos has lived. 17.01.2022 This is Paul with his wife Angie and their three kids - Max (12), Charlie (9), and Scarlett (11). A few months ago he was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer (Gleason Score 9) and had a radical prostatectomy. His cancer was picked up by a routine blood test which revealed an elevated PSA level (39). One thing became very clear, I didnt have any choice other than to have a radical prostatectomy a frightening prospect at only 50, particularly after exhibiting no sym...ptoms and feeling as if I was in good health. Mentally it was a huge challenge ... with a young family and a very busy life, the news turned our world upside down. Despite having his prostate removed, scans have detected prostate cancer cells in surrounding areas, which means his fight isnt over. Incredibly, Paul joined The Long Run only six weeks post-surgery, and initially set a personal fundraising goal of $3,000 and 72kms of walking/running. Inspired by the support of our friends and family, I increased my fundraising goal to $5,000 and my total distance to 100km. My wife Angie and I both have teams and have been in a competition for km and dollar honours! Paul - youre an absolute champion for the cause!!!!! Friends - you can support him here https://www.thelongrun.org.au/fundraisers/paulbain
17.01.2022 Two and a half years ago Brian Schofield’s life changed dramatically, when he heard the news he had prostate cancer. A leading businessman and company owner, he credits the diagnosis with changing his personal and professional outlook. It’s an understatement to say I was shocked by the diagnosis. I’ve worked most of my career in the explosives industry, but never expected to be blown away by news like this. At the time, like most other Aussie blokes, I didn’t know much about... prostate cancer and the different stages of disease, which made the diagnosis even more challenging. The experience has inspired Brian to raise awareness so other men don’t have to fight the disease feeling alone. As Operations Manager of IEE Global, Brian has teamed up with Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia to boost research, awareness, and support beginning in his backyard. IEE Global is proud to support the work of Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, as Australia’s leading charitable fund for prostate cancer research and awareness. Within our own workplace, we’ve collaborated with PCFA to ensure the men and women on our team have greater awareness of the symptoms and screening options, and who to turn to if they need support. We’re also preparing to host a Big Aussie Barbie this November. Here’s a great shot of Brian with his wife Susie and his daughter Jemma, taken in Copenhagen at Christmas time in 2018. Check out Brian’s story here > https://bit.ly/2TtuCfi < and register now to host a Big Aussie Barbie! https://www.bigaussiebarbie.com.au

15.01.2022 Meet Tony Walker, proud father of four, paramedic, PCFA National Board Director and prostate cancer survivor. Ten years ago, at the age of 47, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Following my surgery I experienced significant problems with my continence, like many other men in my situation. One of the things that became obvious to me quite quickly is that this is an issue we don’t talk about, even though it can cause significant damage to men’s social and personal lives. B...eing a paramedic, I was fortunate to have some professional knowledge on my side, and with the right support, and good continence products, I’ve never been more active. I’m sharing my story out of solidarity with other men who might be struggling with their diagnosis and the side-effects of treatment. Together we can overcome the daily challenges that come with prostate cancer none of us need be alone in our struggle. We’d like to thank Tony for being the voice of a new campaign in partnership with TENA. If you’d like more information and support with continence concerns, click here https://bit.ly/3kd2au2
15.01.2022 Meet Luke Selth, a prostate cancer researcher who joined The Long Run as a way of paying forward more breakthroughs. He lost his Pop to the disease and is determined to make a difference. Most people would be aware that funding from the government for biomedical research is extremely tight. PCFA therefore serves a crucial role, providing additional and much-needed support to Australias world class prostate cancer researchers. Events like The Long Run form a major part of ...PCFAs fundraising activities; every dollar raised helps. From a personal perspective, PCFA gave my research career a huge boost by providing me with a Young Investigator Award in 2011, which set me on the path to establishing an independent research group and helped me to establish an amazing network of collaborators both in Australia and internationally. Luke - you have our absolute respect - research holds the key and we are with you every step of the way. You can make a massive difference too, join now https://www.thelongrun.org.au

06.01.2022 Here's the story of Mel and James. They're throwing a Big Aussie Barbie for us today. OUR STORY 28 November 2020... My hubby James was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 55. We got it early thankfully. We knew it was in his family (Father, Grandfather, Uncles) so kept on top of it, with blood tests and MRI scans. He had a biopsy which confirmed the cancer. Later, he had a PET scan to make sure it hadn’t travelled to his lymph nodes or bones. Thankfully it hasn’t. Now we are lucky to have three choices because of early diagnosis. Brachytherapy, external radiation, or surgery. His cancer on the apex of his prostate, which means surgery could result in loss of erectile function and continence. Luckily we caught it early and the cancer is slow growing. This is why it is of most importance to know your risks - with earlier detection they can monitor it, tell you if it’s slow growing or not and give you options. Today for our Big Aussie Barbie James will be talking about the importance of his fitness and health. We are in a good headspace right now, at first it wasn’t great, which is no surprise when someone in your family gets prostate cancer. I saw BIG AUSSIE BARBIE advertised on Facebook and thought, you know what, I need to raise awareness. So I signed up and set a $500 goal for donations. Well I got to that quickly so, I put the limit up to $1000. So far we have raised $1313. If you could donate a buck or two to Prostate Cancer Research we would be so grateful. If not please talk to your husband, boyfriend, brother, uncle, or any male you know, of the importance of knowing your risks and taking action. The earlier you detect it, the sooner we can beat it. Men, please pay attention to prostate awareness! Your family need you. Early diagnosis counts for a lot. Thank you for reading our story and for supporting our Big Aussie Barbie today.
