25.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: The limiting reagent (1) determines the amount of product formed (2) is fully consumed (none left over)

24.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: When balancing their combustion equations, dont forget the O in alcohols

24.01.2022 The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2019 was awarded to #johnbgoodenough #stanleywhittingham and #akirayoshino for the development of the lithium-ion battery. . . . .... . Lightweight, rechargeable and powerful, these batteries is used in everything from mobile phones to laptops and electric vehicles. It can store sooo much energy from solar and wind power, making possible a fossil fuel-free society. . . . . . #nobelprize #nobelprize2019 #nobelchemistryprize #chemistry #lithiumbattery #lithiumionbattery #fossilfuelfree #solarenergy #teslabattery #electriccar See more

22.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Results are a reflection of your preparation weeks/months leading up to the exam day. Every lesson. Every question. Every attempt. Every summary. They all add up. Be consistent. (This is not a secret)

20.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Significant figures keeps track of the quality of measurements. Dont forget to include them in your final answer.

19.01.2022 The hydrogenation of alkenes produce saturated alkanes. This is one of the first addition reactions HSC chemistry students will encounter. Although its one of the most simplest types, its understanding helps you navigate through other addition reactions. Here are some questions you should test yourself when learning:... Do I require a catalyst? Does temperature play a role? What will be my product or products? Can I name these substances using the IUPAC system? When will I expect multiple products? What is Markovnikovs rule and is it important? Does the products physical and chemical properties change? How? Why? What are the other types of addition reactions? Can I tell which reaction was used solely based on the product? Hope this helps! #hscchem #hscchemistry #organicchemistry #hsc #nesa #nesasyllabus #pchemtutor

19.01.2022 If you are asked to determine whether a reaction is at equilibrium or the net direction of an equilibrium, calculate the Q value. If its greater than Kc, net direction is backwards. If less than If, forwards. If equal, then you are already at equilibrium. Hope this helps! #hsc #chemistry #chemistryeducation #atar #chem #equilibrium #reaction #chemicalreaction #chemicalengineering #exam #chemistryexam #chemicalequilibrium #chemistrytutor #tutor #tutoring #canleyheights

18.01.2022 There are many conditions to consider when fermenting sugars to produce alcohol like keeping the temperature constant at 37C or keeping oxygen out to prevent oxidation of the alcohol. We aim to help students remember content by understanding concepts in depth with lots of pictures to reinforce knowledge and also providing methods to structure responses to maximise grades. Trial exams are just around the corner, lets push it!... Hope this helps! #alcohol #wine #fermentation #yeast #chemistry #chemistrynotes #chem #pchemtutor

17.01.2022 There are 4 main addition polymers in HSC Chemistry. Heres one of them. This one is used to make things like CD cases, tool handles, styrofoam cups, packaging materials... #polymers #plastic #recyclingplastic #styrofoam #iupac

15.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Conductivity in aqueous solutions is a measure of the ability of water to conduct an electric current. The more ions there are in the solution, the higher its conductivity. Note: ions means all ions, not just hydrogen ions. Note: concentration of hydrogen ions relates more to pH rather than electrical conductivity, although it can used infer EC of a solution.

14.01.2022 Happy Lunar New Year! May this year bring you many opportunities, prosperity and much joy and laughter to you and your families. To my HSC students, I also wish you all best for the year ahead during your studies building sturdier habits and routines to reach new highs in your HSC including, of course, your most favourite subject, chemistry. ... I am ever so grateful to be your tutor. Did you know? In the chinese zodiac, rats are known to be clever and quick thinkers; successful, but content with living a quiet and peaceful life. Wishing you all the success for the year to come! #cny2020 #yearoftherat #bestwishes #hscchemistry #pchemtutor

12.01.2022 Strong acids dissociate fully in solution releasing hydrogen ions. Some acids partially dissociate which we call weaks. In your HSC, you should commit to knowledge at least 5 different strong acids.... - Hope this helps! - - - --------------------------------------------------- Follow @pchemtutor Follow @pchemtutor Follow @pchemtutor --------------------------------------------------- - - - #chemistry #science #physics #biology #lab #chemistrymemes #studentlife #education #sciencememes #band6 #organicchemistry #laboratory #study #chemistrylab #moleconcept #hscphysics #hsc #studygram #chemistrylove #biochemistry #chemist #chem #chemistryjokes #organicchem #organicchemistry #hscchemistry #ilovescience #ilovechemistry #atar #hscchem See more

12.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Put a time limit on a goal. "By the end of the day, I will finish writing 2 pages summary notes" "If I finish my homework by 6pm, I will reward myself with ice cream"... "In the next half hour, I will explain the differences in boiling points for as many pairs of molecules as I can" "I got these questions wrong in my exam, I will re-do all of them in 1 hour" "I cant study, so Im going to spend the next 30 minutes to clear my mind and get straight back into it" "In the next 2 hours, i will study in 15 minute bursts and have 5 minutes rest"

12.01.2022 TIP: Use the IR spectrum of organic compounds to find functional groups (or lack of). This is a qualitative technique that can help you identify the type of molecule youre dealing with. Learn to recognise IR patterns in exams, focus on the diagnostic region...it will make your life a little easier in exams. 11.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: One example of producing energy from an inorganically-dervied fuel is the fission of Uranium-235. Did you know...there are 31 countries in the world that use nuclear energy? Australia is not one of them, but we do have nuclear reactors that make us some pretty neat radioisotopes for medical and industrial use. Should we use nuclear for energy? Heres a great video made by Kurzgesagt!... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcOFV4y5z8c

11.01.2022 TIP: There are 4 core addition polymers and 2 core condensation polymers. We need to remember their types (eg. polyethylene has both LDPE and HDPE types), structure, properties and associated uses. Best to summarise all of these into a nice table that all fit on an A4 page. 11.01.2022 Hi everyone, wishing a Happy Easter to you and your families! I hope youre all doing well during these uncertain times.

10.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Use intermolecular forces to explain physical properties of hydrocarbons.

10.01.2022 This Ester is commonly used as an industrial solvent. Can it be used for other purposes? What does it smell like? What reactants are required to make it? What conditions are needed? #ester #reflux #hscchemistry #chemistry #science #scienceeducation #organicchemistry #industrialchemistry

08.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Reinforce your understanding by explaining it to someone else

08.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Ethanol is hygroscopic. It attracts water vapour ...so when using in cars, this can potentially corrode fuel lines and deteriorate rubber components in your engines! So, should I pour E10 in my car ??? Modern cars in Australia have modified car engines that can take up to maximum 10% ethanol. You will see a tag behind the fuel door of your car "Ethanol E10 Fuel Suitable". All good there. Cars in USA and some countries of Europe can take up to E85. Brazil, E100!

08.01.2022 TIP: oxidation states tell you whether a half-reaction is undergoing #oxidation or #reduction. Use it as a #tool to quickly check. 07.01.2022 Tip: Test yourself by writing down 3 pairs, then explain how it can resist pH changes when a small amount of strong acid or base is added by using LCP. Understand at least 1 buffer system in nature. If you want to challenge yourself, explain buffering regions when titrating a strong acid to a weak base and vice versa, locating buffering regions in graphs. These are the sort of buffer questions you should be familiar with. Dont leave surprises to jump at you in exams. Didn...t do well in your trials? Its not too late to change things around. 07.01.2022 Tip of the week: Understand the effects of catalysts and how they are represented in graphs

07.01.2022 Did you know? Recycling takes 88% LESS energy than making plastic from raw materials.... But not all plastics are recyclable e.g. typical plastic bags from supermarkets So, what do the numbers mean? #1 PETE: polyethylene terapthalate #2 HDPE: high density polyethylene #3 PVC: polyvinyl chloride #4 LDPE: low density polyethylene #5 PP: polypropylene #6 PS: polystyrene #7 OTHER: other plastics like acrylic, polycarbonate, polyactic fibres Oh! And you cant recycle dirty plastics! e.g. plastics with food residue. Wash it before recycling. Also good to know: glass and metal containers have a higher value of recycling...meaning they can be recycled without the loss of quality.

07.01.2022 We ALL have a big role to play.

07.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Structural formula shows ALL atoms and ALL bonds Here are different representations of the same molecule. Can you identify the structural formula? Hope this helps!

06.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Aspirin is an ester. If you leave aspirin tablets in open air, it can hydrolyse with water vapour reducing its amount and therefore reducing its effect. --> If you take ANY medicine out of its blister...best to take it straight away.

05.01.2022 Today we taught our first class on Aspirin Synthesis! A big task...but not for us! Its such a great feeling to bring real-life skills and knowledge I practice every day in my pharmacy career and bring it to a class to share with all of you!

04.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Alkanes, 1-4 (g), 5-18 (l), 19+ (s)

04.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Take care of yourself. The HSC can be a stressful period. Eat well, stay hydrated, sleep well.

02.01.2022 A nice and simple rule. Super useful in MCQs. No need for calculator.
