20.01.2022 The answer is no! It's a common misconception that using Key Word Sign (or other alternative forms of communication) will stop children from talking, but exactl...y the opposite is true. A child will always communicate in the way that is easiest for them, and speech is the easiest way of communicating with others because we’re all surrounded by people speaking. Therefore, even if Key Word Sign is used, they will continue to develop speech if that is possible for them. We also know from research that using Key Word Sign or other forms of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) will enable a child or adult with communication difficulties to communicate more effectively with others. The University of Sydney has developed a ne...w program to entertain and educate your children at home! The Speech Pathology staff and students would like to invite you to The Playroom@Sydney. The Playroom@Sydney is a program for 3-5 year old children. It will provide your child/children with the opportunities they need to develop their language through fun and interactive activities via telehealth! The program is run by Student Speech Pathologists, is free of cost, and can be accessed in the comfort of your own home. We will run The Playroom@Sydney through Zoom, an online video conferencing application. The live sessions are 30 minutes each on Thursdays and Fridays, starting from the 7th of May to the 29th of May.
