25.01.2022 FREE WORKSHOP HELPS LEARNER DRIVER SUPERVISORS ACCERLERATE A SAFE AND POSITIVE EXPERIENCE FOR YOUNG DRIVERS A free workshop aimed at putting young people on the road to success will be held for the parents and supervisors of learner drivers this month with practical advice to help make their charges safer drivers. Hosted by Singleton Council in partnership with the NSW Government’s Towards Zero initiative, the workshop will be held at Singleton Youth Venue on Wednesday 25 N...ovember 2020 at 5.30pm and will also include additional information and training for prospective mentors under the DRIVE program. The DRIVE program is a partnership between Singleton Council, PCYC Singleton and the Salvation Army’s Drive for Life that trains people to supervise young learner drivers who would otherwise be unable to tally the 120 hours necessary to graduate to their P plates. Since it was introduced in Singleton in 2019, more than 10 participants have worked with mentors to get their drivers licence and benefit from increased opportunities for employment and independence. Vicki Brereton, Council’s Director Organisation and Community Capacity, said drivers licences were often seen as a rite of passage for young people to open up a range of opportunities to travel for study and work, but there were limitations for many prospective drivers. And it can be daunting for parents and the supervisors of learner drivers to become driving instructors for their children or young people, she said. This two-hour workshop aims to give people the practical advice they need to teach their children to drive, covering the current driving rules and requirements for L and P plates, how learner drivers benefit from supervised on-road driving, and how you can help make learning to drive a safe and positive experience. This is also a great introduction for anyone who would like to be part of the DRIVE program, and has a few hours a week to help someone tally up the hours they need to get their licence. The workshop will run for three hours for prospective DRIVE mentors to provide all the information you’ll need to get involved. DRIVE volunteer Chris Giles has been a mentor for more than a year, and has helped three people get their licence who may not be on the road without his help. He’s about to take on another learner driver. If you have a spare couple of hours a week, I encourage anyone to do it, he said. It’s literally life changing for the people involved. A COVID Safe Plan is in place for the workshop and bookings are required. For more information about the workshop, the DRIVE program or to book a place at the workshop, contact Singleton Council on T 02 6578 7290 or email [email protected]

02.01.2022 One in four young Australians live with a mental illness. Without help and support young people will continue to experience high levels of psychological distress. PCYC NSW recently completed the first ever Star Jump Challenge, which brought thousands of people from across the state together to raise vital funds for youth mental health. It was an amazing community effort, but we still need your support to fund our pilot preventative mental resilience program, GRIT.... Please consider making a generous donation, because we all need to support young people struggling to cope with life’s ups and downs.
