25.01.2022 Dive Site Name: The Coombe Reserve, Mosman Park/Swan River Type of Dive: Shore Dive Max Depth: 20m Dive Flag: Yes... Hunting: Yes, Prawns and Crabs How to get there: Go to The Coombe Reserve Mosman Park car park. There is space for only a few cars, but if you cant find a space there, you can drop your equipment off at the green grassy bank near the water, and search just outside for a car parking space. Entry: A short walk to the water and a short swim to the descent point at the middle buoy. Once you have descended you will be almost on top of the shallow wrecks. Conditions: The river is not good to dive after it rains, as the floor and surface can become very silty. If you have had a few days of good weather then you will have a better visibility, the river may still be very silty at the top few meters but is usually better a few meters down. Things to See: Seahorses, Tube Anemones, Timber Boat Wrecks (7m), Sunken Tinny Boat, Sunken Rowing Boat, Bioluminescent Plankton (At Night) Comments: 6m Visibility is superb in the river, average may be 3m. Avoid kicking up the silt below you as you dive, as it can become very milky. Great spot for Prawning and Crabbing. Its not the most extravagant dive site, but it will get you in the water when you cant get into the sea. 17.01.2022 Dive Site Name: Kwinana Grain Terminal An all year round favourite! Type of Dive: Shore Dive... Max Depth: 15m Dive Flag: No Hunting: Yes. I have seen people hunting for Mussels and Crayfish. How to get there: Use Google Maps and search for Kwinana Grain Terminal Diving and you will be directed to the car park. 30 mins from Fremantly and 45 mins from Perth CBD. Entry: From the car park its a very short walk down a fenced off pathway to the beach. Enter the water and surface swim for a long as you want to along the pier. The Pier is 800m long and near the shore the marine life is not as abundant as it is in the middle. Conditions: The jetty is quite sheltered and if the previous few days have been nice conditions then KGT should be a very nice dive. Notherly winds may cause a current and Westerly winds may cause a large swell. Because this is a shallow site a large swell can churn up the sand and make the visibility dissapear. In good visibility you can see up to 15m+ and have a calm and relaxing dive looking at all the macro life. Things to see: MACRO MACRO MACRO. Nudibranchs galore, Cuttlefish, Octopus, Pineapplefish, Mussels, Snappers, Soft Corals, Sponges, Stonefish, Sand Dollars. Comments: If large boats are docked at the end of the pier the visibility may be churned up at the end of the pier - Id reccomend just diving the shallows. The sound of the boats under the water can be very loud, just realise the engines may be started during your dive and dont panic! This site is amazing for macro photography and you can get some great contrasting images under the pier. At the end of the pier it starts to get deeper and this is where the big schools of fish are. 11.01.2022 Full Foot Fins vs Open Heel Fins Full foot fins are easy to wear and remove, as long as you have the correct size. Sizing is usually done similar to shoe size as they will be worn barefoot. They are best for warm water activities as they do not give you any thermal protection for your feet. They are mostly used for shorter periods of time in the water, and surface sports such as snorkelling. Open heel fins are slightly more cumbersome as they are usually slightly larger and ...bulkier. They are also worn over dive booties. The sizing is usually XS to XL and are adjustable through the straps for a more custom fit. They are better for colder water and longer dives as the booties help keep your feet warm. The extra foot protection from the booties also helps you avoid cuts and scrapes if you have to walk to a beach or even over rocks before getting to the divesite. Hunting: No - It is its own sanctuary zone within the Marmion Marine Park How to get there: Go to AQWA @ Hillarys and park for free by the pier wall Entry: Don your equipment in the car park and walk towards the end of the pier. Just past the Helicopter pad to the left, climb up and over and then down the rocks and you will be able to see the tip of the reef in the water. Be careful! Its a slippery climb. Surface swim to reef or take compass bearing and swim underwater. Conditions: Needs low easterly winds and little swell. It can be a wash out if previous days had rough conditions. Always check the entry/exit point before donning equipment to check it is safe to climb in and out. Things to see: Ledges, Overhangs, Swim through tunnels, Underwater Trail Markers (Placards), Sponges, Soft Corals, Hard Corals, Sea grass, Starfish, Feather star, Octopus, Crayfish, Old Wife, Boxfish, Pufferfish, Squid, Rabbitfish, Nudibranchs, etc etc Comments: Can also be an epic night dive. Type of Dive: Shore Dive Max Depth: 9m Dive Flag: Yes Hunting: Yes How to get there: Use a map or SatNav to navigate to North Mole Lighthouse. The road towards to lighthouse is called North Mole Drive. Park as close to the disabled bays as possible to prevent a longer walk with your gear. Entry: The disabled fishing ramp. Bring 10-15m of strong rope with you and tie it to the top of the disabled ramp slope before you enter, for an easier exit. The entry is not too difficult, but it is still very steep to the waters edge and you need to take careful steps down the ramp. There are nearby steps which will take you half way down the slope, but it does get very slippery as soon as you leave the steps. DO NOT do a giant stride entry! There are submerged rocks. Position yourself near the edge, fully inflated, and fall into the water as gracefully as you can. Climbing out is more difficult - but using the rope you have tied to the top does make it a lot easier. Conditions: A good spot NOR that will give you some protection from a SW swell. Best conditions are with no wind and a less than a 1.5 swell. Not suitable if there is a Westerly wind or Northerly swells. Things to See: Take a 355 degree heading from the entrance point and approximately 180m out that way, you will find the 20m Gareenup Wreck at about 9m depth. The wreck should be penetrable, if you are a specialist in wreck diving. When you find the bow of the ship, continue at a bearing of 355 degrees for 50m to find some ceramics within the seagrass. If you take a bearing of 265 and follow that for 50m you may be able to find some of the leftover ammunition. It is possible to see Weedy Sea dragons here, octopus, squid, rays, nudibranchs and many more Western Australia favourites. Comments: Only dive the north side of North mole off the disabled ramp, the Southern side is a shipping lane. Definitely take a torch so you can thoroughly explore the nooks and crannys of the wreck. Be careful not to snag yourself on the jagged edges of the iron shipwreck. This also makes an excellent night dive. #Divesite #WesternAustralia #PerthisOK #NorthMole #PerthDivingAcademy
