23.01.2022 Quick question....Im going to start creating YouTube and Facebook tutorials/videos about photography (mostly astrophotography but can be anything from editing to scouting, to set-up etc.) in a few weeks and looking for your feedback. I have an idea of things I will begin with but would like to hear from you. If you could pick up one thing from me, whether youre new to photography or have some experience, what would it be? I just want to add value to my followers in someway ...so, will not be holding out with any secret techniques. Consider it a knowledge giveaway, with no attachments. Once I start posting them, Ill let everyone know. I really do appreciate all the love from you all and want to give some of that back in a meaningful way! Shot info: Taken in beautiful Grampians National Park about three weeks ago. It was day two of pretty much no sleep.I did some photography at Lake Toolondo the day prior, spent the next day hiking, and then crashed for a few hours with my alarm set for midnight that night. I had this shot in my mind from the last time I was here so decided for a late night hike up Hollow Mountain. Being up here without another soul around was completely serene. If you ever want to have a total realization of what you are meant to do in life, get far out in nature away from the noise, and you will definitely feel a greater sense of clarity. You wont have a single fight or flight moment cross your mind. (unless you hear a Kangaroo rustle around in some bushes that you cant see). They got me at least once! As always, if you ever have any photography questions, Im here to help!

22.01.2022 First Milky Way shot of the year and it was an awesome time spent camping at Cayo Costa State Park in Florida!

22.01.2022 Been working on some different long exposure shots and editing lately. Here are some new additions recently added to my website. First one is from MCBH in Oahu and the other needs no introduction. If interested in any prints visit https://jperryphotography.smugmug.com

21.01.2022 Eagle Rock Time to get back out on the road for some ! A little throwback to the beginning of the year with some good people in beautiful Aireys Inlet. Will definitely be making a return to this spot next year. : Nikon D850 w/14-24mm Nikkor lens. 20 seconds at f/2.8, ISO 6400, 14mm.

21.01.2022 One of the most fascinating places I have ever been. Jokulsarlon~ Glacier Lagoon, in Iceland. This spot is known as Diamond Beach and this is why. Will be up in website soon.

21.01.2022 A few shots from a recent photography road trip to Utah. Although weather conditions changed drastically from freezing sleet/snow to wind & dust, we were able to get some clear beautiful days as well. Had to have some sleepless nights too, but all worth it in the end.

20.01.2022 Bales and Milky Way Trails Taken at Phillip Island, Victoria Australia. Took my first road trip out of the city since lockdown lifted a few weeks ago to shoot the Geminids Meteor Shower but didn’t have much luck with it. Funny enough I found this open field in the country on the way back that looked promising so I got out to check, and everything lined up nicely. First image is the Soutern Hemisphere Milky Way, during Aussie summer when core isn’t visible. Still lots of amaz...ing sights in the sky during this time of year to include the Southern Cross (Crux Constellation), Magellanic Clouds, and Carina Nebula. The second image is is the result of 270 images of the same exposure to create star trails. A cool way to create colorful trails like this is to make sure to include some blue hour shots when the stars are still visible and the golden hour colors are faintly present. EXIF: Nikon D850 w/14-24mm Nikkor lens. Image 1- is a 25 exposure stack for noise reduction and image 2- is 270 exposures combined to show movement of stars during earths rotation. All were taken at 20 seconds, f/2.8, ISO 6400, 14mm. Edited in Photoshop and Camera Raw.

20.01.2022 Giant Salt Basin For most of the year Lake Tyrrell is dry but at times it can be covered by shallow water. The evaporation leaves a salt crust which is commercially extracted (100,000 tons a year) by Cheetham Salt Works on the Northern end of the lake. A truly beautiful place to view the sunrise, sunset, stars, and a huge range of wildlife. I will definitely be making another visit in the near future. I took this shot early this year before the outbreak and had some incredibly clear skies. On this night there was a faint haze hanging out on the horizon which created an interesting glow in the sky.

20.01.2022 Split Point Light Taken in Aireys Inlet, Victoria Australia last month. Split Point Lighthouse is located off the beautiful Great Ocean Road. Along with the lighthouse are other amazing views from a few lookouts just a few steps away. I arrived here just after 2am and just started shooting all around, trying to find different views and angles. I wasnt sure if this angle was going to work but after going through my files when I got home, I actually liked it more. I set up my ...tripod as close to the lighthouse keepers property fence line and took a nine shot series to use later for stacking. Stacking is a technique used to minimize noise in an image and give you much cleaner results. Social: https//www.instagram.com/jsn_pdog/ EXIF: Nikon D850 w/Nikkor 14-24mm lens. 9 shots stacked in SLS. 25 seconds at f/2.8, ISO 5000, 14mm. Edited in Lightroom and Photoshop.

19.01.2022 In this video I will be covering the basics of getting started editing a Milky Way image in Lightroom.

18.01.2022 The Great Conjunction of 2020 Taken at Dog Rocks in Geelong Victoria, it was the perfect setting to capture this shot. The weather was not supposed to be good for the day of the conjunction when Jupiter and Saturn were the closest, so I had to go the day before. Still was awesome to photograph, especially since it won’t happen again for another 80 some years. I love using trees in my foregrounds plus with Christmas right around the corner, and this known as the ‘Christmas Star,’ I thought it would be fitting over this beautiful tree. Wishing everyone a blessed and Merry Christmas!

17.01.2022 Another shot taken on a recent camping trip to Cayo Costa State Park in Florida. I went searching for spots during the day and found this stretch of deserted beach where the tide had carved a curved ledge out of the sand that lead right to the Milky Way. Wasnt sure how it would look without the human element so after taking a series without, I took one of me holding my flashlight up to the sky. I liked the latter, so stacked the series of 8 without me, then blended myself an...d light beam into the stacked version. EXIF Data: Nikon D810 paired with Nikkor 14-24mm. Single shot with me- 20 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 4000, 24mm. 8 shots stacked- Settings same as above. Post processing done in Lightroom, Starry Landscape Stacker, and finished in Photoshop.

17.01.2022 Pier 7 Finally getting to go though all my pics from this amazing road trip, I cant stay away from my San Fran album. Cannot wait to go back as this city is so photogenic everywhere. More to come in the near future.

15.01.2022 Night sky of Sequoia National Park.

15.01.2022 I think this is my favorite shot of downtown San Diego to date. Beautiful city with beautiful sunrises.

14.01.2022 Another shot from my Bali pics that I have not posted yet. "Man vs. Mother Nature." Not quite sure what the guy was doing out there but was able to catch some cool silhouettes.

12.01.2022 Hello everyone! I wanted to take the time to talk about some gear that I use. I get asked about it a lot and the one thing that I can tell you from experience and struggles is, these two pieces of equipment were game changers for me; Nodal Slide Rail and L-Bracket! Have you ever wanted to switch from landscape to portrait with your camera mounted on a tripod? Then loosen everything and find that little notch in order to flip your camera down to the side for that vertical shot... and get it level? Yeah.big pain in the ass for me, and these two things will ease that process in the matter of just seconds and make doing panoramic shots much easier to stitch in Lightroom or Photoshop as well. So, first things first- you need a tripod head that supports an Arca-Swiss Plate instead of the "Classic" or "FlipLock" quick release but if you dont have one no worries, there are adapters for the old style to turn them into Arca -Swiss style. For the nodal slide rail, I recommend just using the 120 or 140mm rail which will handle most wide angle and shorter focal length lenses. For telephoto, youll probably want something longer. I attached some images of the two different setups I have and as you can see, the tripod head will stay upright and all you have to do is unscrew the little knob in the back, change your orientation, then tighten back upits that easy! The nodal slide rails are universal but for the L-Bracket you will need to search for your specific camera model. Both can be searched for on Amazon and you will have tons of options. Just do your research and read reviews but this has helped me massively! As always, if you ever have any photography questions, Im happy to help!

11.01.2022 What is noise in an image? Image noise is random variation of brightness or color information in images, and is usually an aspect of electronic noise. It gives a photograph that grainy look of old film images. With todays cameras and their sensors, it is possible to overcome quite a bit of it. What I have noticed with noise is that it is never the same in any image so there are always different adjustments I make to get the cleanest possible image. First, I will try to edit ...a single exposure and see how clean I can get it (gives me the practice as well). If that doesnt work very well, I will usually stack images (Ill cover this another time) for noise reduction as my backup option. So, lets start with the basics first and this can be played with for any image. However, just remember, the higher the ISO, the more noise there will be. I always start my editing process in Lightroom. What I usually do first is to just drop down lightrooms automatic sharpening that it gives to your image on import. Next all you need to do is move the noise reduction luminance slider to a point where the noise starts to become much less. Remember, you can never remove noise completely, but you can reduce it drastically. Another thing to keep in mind, the farther you push it, the more the detail will start to disappear from your image. I usually will push it far to the right first, then slowly start to back it off till I achieve my desired results. In the images I attached you can see just from this simple technique you can get very good results. What I always do is to adjust my shadows, exposure, whites and blacks first in the basic panel. All of these will affect the amount of noise in your image so make your basic adjustments first, then play with the noise reduction. This is a good starting point, especially if you are just learning how to do photo editing. Night images will always have much more noise since your ISO will be high. There are other more advanced techniques, but I will cover those another time. In the before and after Milky Way image I attached you can see the results you can achieve from just a single exposure at ISO 6400. I just did some minor adjustments in the basic panel (attached screenshot), used some gradients and a few other local adjustments to do some color correction to add a little punch to the image, then did my noise reduction last. Took less than 20 min. I did not bring any sharpening back, but you can always bring the sharpen slider back to 40 or adjust it to what you prefer. Its all preference but in this case, I got the detail I wanted without it. (All editing done in Lightroom only) If there are any things you struggle with or would like to learn, please let me know in the comments. As always, if you ever have any photography questions, Im here to help!

09.01.2022 One of the best sunrises Ive seen so far in Florida

09.01.2022 Photo of the Week For this shot I used a circular polarizer during the day to get a one second exposure for the silky water look. Polarizers are really good for cutting glare and getting nice blues (straight out of camera), but will also give you a couple stops less light for longer exposures. Which is perfect for waterfall shots like this. EXIF: single exposure, 1 second (Shutter speed), f/14 (Aperture), ISO 64 (Sensor sensitivity to light)... Have a great week and as always, let me know of any photography questions you may have!

09.01.2022 A clear crisp night in Julian, CA. Was able to use the sky and this beautiful old truck to my advantage. Hit shop now for prints.

08.01.2022 One of the coolest hikes on Oahu. The infamous Haiku Stairs (aka. Stairway to Heaven). Great spot for all kinds of photography.

07.01.2022 Reflecting Looking back on 2020 I can honestly say it wasn’t all bad but I’m definitely over it, and ready to move on. Wishing everyone a new year filled with unmatched happiness, opportunity, and courage to follow your dreams. There is always a new bar to set in your life, so don’t wait till it’s too late to share your gift with the world. Remember to hug those closest to you or pick up the phone and tell them you love them. Life is precious and no one is promised tomorrow. Much love to all! Taken early in the year before lockdown out at beautiful Grampians National Park. Will definitely be exploring more of this park and it’s trails in 2021.

06.01.2022 I get asked a lot of questions about astrophotography and what advice I can give people just starting out. It would take a whole book to really explain it all in detail, but Ill do my best to just give little nuggets of info that has helped me over the years. The first thing is just getting your settings dialed in and learn how to get proper focus on whatever lens you are using (preferably wide angle). Find the best infinity focal point for that specific lens (there are tons... of videos and articles online about this) and when you have it, tape down the focus ring before going out so it wont move on you. Also turn off auto focus and lens stabilizer prior to mounting on tripod. A good place to start for camera settings (exposure triangle) is aperture to f/2.8 (if you dont have a lens that goes that wide in aperture just use the widest you have), ISO 3200, and 20 second shutter. Dont worry so much about white balance but I usually set it to daylight, and itll give you a pretty good start. Now with the shutter speed itll depend on a few factors like focal length and if you are shooting with a crop sensor camera etc., but to keep it simple I usually go with 20 seconds when Im using any focal length on my 14-24mm on a full frame camera, and it works just fine with no star trailing. Otherwise you can use the 500 rule (divide 500 by 24mm for example equals approx. 20 seconds) but I find it isnt that accurate when you start getting wider. Anyways, I usually start with these settings and then adjust from there, and the only thing I really concern myself with adjusting when Im at my location is ISO or focal length. After you get everything dialed in, set it up prior to going out for your shoot. Itll help immensely not having to fumble around with settings etc. in the dark. Hope that helps some of you who may just be starting out and if you have any questions on anything at all feel free to message me and I will reply. Have a great week everyone! See more

06.01.2022 Another road trip shot from Zion National park. This is a blended shot with two shots of the exact same composition, one for the foreground and one for the sky and blended together for the right exposure.

05.01.2022 One of my favorite places to watch the sunset in Oahu!

04.01.2022 Had a great time on Monday at the Flagler YMCA for their launch party. We will be back at the same location from 9 am to 1 pm tomorrow (WEDNESDAY, OCT 23). 04.01.2022 El Capitan! Another edit from the cross-country trip. Yosemite was definitely a highlight!

03.01.2022 A little tribute to my new hometown. Cant wait to explore this awesome city with my camera some more!

02.01.2022 Some new Milky Way images I got from a recent trip to Jekyll Island State Park in Georgia. About an hour and a half drive for me, this was a must see place to photograph the Milky Way. Actually had to go two nights in a row (with very little sleep ) to capture these images due to cloud cover but patience paid off. I have a bunch more on the way and will be doing a revamp of my website this week. Hope you enjoy!

01.01.2022 Hello friends and family! Hope everyone is happy and health! Here is a virtual exhibition some students at my college put together. All from our current students, 1st year through last. Completely free so check it out and share to show support. Bet you cant tell which are mine! It is live from Friday 21st August to Friday 9th September.... 01.01.2022 Horsetail Fall flows over the eastern edge of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. Its a small waterfall that glows orange during sunset in mid- to late February, in a way reminiscent of the Firefall that occurred historically from Glacier Point. I was finally able to catch this phenomenon tonight as the sun set on El Capitan.
