25.01.2022 The Peaceful Kids program run as a group really helps to support children in understanding that they are not alone with their feelings, thoughts, or experiences. The feedback I received below reinforces to me how we still have a way to go in society about sharing our feelings and experiences freely without the fear of rejection or stigmatisation. All children feel worry, fear, anger, and sadness at different times just as adults do. It's normal.... It’s okay to laugh if you are feeling happy, it's OK to cry if you’re feeling sad and It’s okay to feel worried. The more we talk about our feelings and how our mental health impacts our lives and those around us, the more we can reduce the stigma that sometimes surrounds things like depression and anxiety. Peaceful Kids is a safe space for children to learn about their feelings and how to look after their mental health. Mental Health is something we ALL have. Peaceful Kids gives children the language, skills, and positive coping strategies to use for themselves. Its a preventative and it helps children who are struggling. This program also teaches social and emotional skills. Social-emotional skills are essential for connecting with others. As children become increasingly self-aware, more effective at communicating, and better at understanding the thoughts and feelings of themselves and others, their social skills increase. Being able to regulate one's emotions in social situations and empathise are important skills that allow children to fit in with groups & start to create healthy interpersonal relationships. Having social connections, good personal relationships, and being part of a community are vital to maintaining good mental health.

24.01.2022 Today in Peaceful Kids at Hornsby North Public School we learned about worry time - ( WorryTime is based on cognitive behavioural techniques) and created worry boxes. We sat outside in the lovely afternoon sun and enjoyed our time together. Worrying is the process of thinking excessively about negative things that could occur in the future. Worry is normal and we all worry at different times. Some 'worry' helps to keep us safe.... When we are not in control of a situation our worrying has no use, it can lead to increasing anxiety, which in turn reduces our physical and mental health. How can we stop worry? When we try specifically not to think about something, we often end up thinking about it more. For example, try really hard right now not to think about a large glittery purple elephant with ears as big as a house and a trunk that lights up the room. Spend a good 30 seconds not thinking about this large glittery bright purple elephant. How many times did you in fact just think about that elephant? Probably more than if you had just carried on with your usual thought processes. If we want to spend less time thinking about something, simply trying not to think about it won’t work. Also, as mentioned some worrying can be helpful for keeping us safe. The worry time technique is not about stopping worrying, but about reducing the amount of time we spend worrying about things outside of our control. #peacefulkids #mindfulness #resilience #resilientkids #CourageousKids #Hornsby #hornsbynorthpublicschool #lifeskills #wellness #relaxwithrossy #Wellbeing #mindfulkids #mentalhealth

23.01.2022 The start of the 2021 school year is just around the corner and I know that many of our children are beggining to think about how this year might be for them. Whose class will I be in? Will I be in the same class as my friends? Will I like my teacher?... Will the work be too hard for me? Will the problems I had last year still be there? Will I have to home school again? All of these thoughts are perfectly normal but some children find change and worry overwhelming. Learning how to cope well is a skill and mindfulness is a proven strategy that really helps children not only just survive in the modern world, but to thrive in it! Peaceful Kids offers children a safe space and the opportunity to explore their feelings and learn effective coping strategies to assist them in managing their thoughts and emotions. Mindfulness can be used as a preventive measure for stress, anxiety, and difficulties with concentration and helps maintain and boost emotional wellness. To support our children and young people returning to school, I am offering a back to school special - 10% discount if your child is booked in before the 27th of January. Program starts Wednesday February 10 at Hornsby North Public School (Ida street, Hornsby) Please contact me via email if you would like to organise a phone chat. [email protected] Thank you

20.01.2022 Mindfulness teaches kids to connect to themselves. When they aren’t empathic, when they aren’t kind to others, or their communities, it’s usually because they’re not connected to themselves. And the research has backed this up: one study found that kids who learned mindful awareness practices (MAPs) had better executive function after eight weeks of training twice a week. It does a lot for self-regulation, says Smith. Kids that are really impulsive can learn to develop that pause between stimulus and reaction. Then you have the skills to realize when you’re angry, when you feel stress arising. And you have the skills to de-escalate yourself.
19.01.2022 Learning to let go of the attachment we have with our thoughts is a continual process but it's a process that leads to a far greater sense of wellbeing. My mind is always talking, venting, mumbling, sometimes yelling, honestly, it feels like sometimes it is talking a million miles an hour. It says all kinds of sometimes weird & wonderful, crazy stuff.... Can you relate? I learnt a while back that I was not my thoughts, instead, I am the observer of my thoughts, feelings, and emotions. I practiced with this concept noticing my thoughts, feelings and emotions and the more I practiced the clearer it became that I (big I) was in charge. I realised that I could do three things with them. I could attach to them, I could act on them, or I could let them go. At first, letting go looked like softening in my attachment and pausing before acting. It was a gradual process of weaving more compassion into the stories I was feeding myself about my life and the world around me. Compassion is key in this whole process. Ram Dass said, Emotions are like waves". Our thoughts and feelings are also very much like waves. In Peaceful Kids we look at our thoughts and imagine they are leaves ...we watch them slowly drift away like leaves on a stream. 19.01.2022 Happy October. What are your goals for this month? Having goals to look forward to is one of the keys to happiness.... Life is far from perfect, but there are lots of reasons for optimism. Setting positive goals for the future gives our lives a sense of direction and purpose. And although we face many challenges there are also lots of reasons to stay hopeful. By consciously choosing our priorities we can overcome issues, make progress, and focus on what really matters. Download the October Action for Happiness calendar here -https://bit.ly/2SeHhCn

17.01.2022 This term has been busy but as I have begun to wind down my program for families the feedback that is pouring in just makes my heart smile. From merit certificates to children sleeping better. I love hearing the feedback from children describing how this has helped them and parents sharing how this has impacted the whole family in so many positive ways. 14.01.2022 In order to thrive in life, we need to be able to navigate the periods of rain, and the storms and the potholes it will inevitably bring with compassion. To begin to navigate the journey of compassion we must start where we are, with ourselves. Self-compassion requires an honest and open connection with our own vulnerability. The rain is clearing now in Sydney where I am but the sweet smell of the air around me and the earth freshly watered reminds me to stop and take care o...f myself. The RAIN reminds me to notice what is happening in my internal world today as I prepare for this week. The acronym RAIN, first coined about 20 years ago by Michele McDonald, is an easy-to-remember tool for practicing mindfulness. 13.01.2022 Growing resilient Kids using Neuroscience as a foundation - Emotional well-being and social skills provide a strong foundation for developing cognitive abilities. Emotional, cognitive and physical capacities that develop in the early childhood years are the essential foundation for success in later adult life.... Emotions support the development of executive functions when they are well regulated, but interfere with them when they are out of control, impeding attention and decision-making. In the long run, reduced emotional regulation in early childhood affects a child’s social capacities and the ability to adapt to school. The development of emotional capabilities run along with more evident skills like mobility, thinking and communication. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to a child’s emotions, and it should be considered a fundamental part of her/his/their brain development. It is impressive to see how children actively react to emotional changes in their parent or carer. In some cases, learning to manage emotions can be harder than learning to count or read, and it can even be a sign of future psychological problems. Tip: Always pay attention to all emotions. It may not be relevant to you, but it is for your child. All emotions are OK. There are no good or bad emotions. All emotions are valid. 13.01.2022 Mindful breathing is a powerful tool for self-regulation. This is a lovely and simple exercise suitable for all ages. And it works beautifully with younger children. It can be taught using the child's own hand or more powerfully using a parent or caregiver for co-regulation. ... The parent traces around the childs hand with their pointer finger breathing in and out slowly and then the child does this back to the parent. When the child is tracing and breathing the parent can pace their breathing to match the child. It can be helpful to notice the initial speed of the childs tracing and breath and comment on how that speed made them feel. (Children often start off doing this too fast ) Repeat the exercise yourself slowing down the breath and movement or ask the child to repeat the exercise and ask whether they felt a difference. Repeat as needed. If you have a moment perhaps you might like to try this out right now. 11.01.2022 Gosh, we have had a few beautiful days here in Sydney. We have had the perfect weather to spend time outdoors during these school holidays, in nature, with our families and loved ones. Nature is a wonderful gift. It heals, lifts our spirits, promotes awe and happiness, and has a myriad of other benefits.... Did you know researchers have proved through brain scans that just looking at pictures of natural environments reduces stress levels? Research also shows that people who regularly interact with nature feel happier within themselves and with their lives overall, they even have better physical health. Studies also show patients in hospitals with a view of nature heal faster and require less pain medication. So this week as you love, live, work, play, and daydream don't forget to plan lots of time outdoors for your nature boost before we head back into the school term. You could try: Going for a walk Plan a picnic at your nearest national park Get out for a bushwalk or mountain bike ride Going for a swim at the beach, lake river, or dam Plant some herbs or a balcony/terrace garden Change your screen saver to nature scenes. Visit your library and take a visual holiday Check out the Natural Geographic virtual library. . . . . #happiness #joy #stressrelief #holistic #nature #mentalwellness #wellbeing #peacefulmind #healing #family #outdoors #mindful #peacefulkids #naturephotography #mindful #mindfulliving #happykids #consciousliving #scenicviews #bliss #relaxation #peacefulparents #resilience #sydney #healthyhabits #relaxwithrossy
11.01.2022 I have had parents wonder how their child will cope with an hour’s mindfulness class. We chat and laugh in Peaceful Kids, we read books, have craft activities, draw in our workbooks and we take turns making the singing bowl sing. We shake, wiggle, and stretch, tuning into our beautiful bodies noticing the sensations our bodies speak to us with and how through noticing our bodily sensations we can learn to self soothe before we become overwhelmed. ... We learn about our fabulous minds and how we can use positive thoughts to help ourselves. We learn about mindfulness and discover we don’t need to be sitting still or serious to enjoy this fabulous form of meditation. We practice simple breathing and grounding techniques we can use anywhere. When I ask what the best part of their day is, I often hear,'this class'. The hour flies by and before we know it, we are packing up, getting ready to leave. It's normal for children to ask if they can come back and do the program again. #mindfulkids #mindfulness #peacefulkids #wellbeing #mentalhealth #children #heartcentered #holistic #mindful #resilientkids #happykids #meditationteacher #stillness #peace
11.01.2022 I am so proud of the children I work with. They show up each week sharing about their lives being brave, vulnerable, strong and courageous. Every child is given a questionnaire that they fill out on the first day and then again in a different colour on our last lesson. This child used orange beforehand and green afterwards. There are a few separate questions specifically just for afterwards so we can track what changes have occurred.... This feedback was from a gorgeous young soul who struggled with anger or ‘flipping their lid as Daniel Siegel calls it. I love how afterwards this child was able to identify that they had more coping strategies than when they started and they felt they could cope more often. They described the picture to me as 'here is me before hand with steam curling out of my ears just demanding to know WHY' and here is me now feeling OK. Whether at school, at home or out in the community our children are faced with a variety of sometimes tricky situations. They can't control what others do or what happens around them but they can learn to control how they respond to these situations and how to process them using positive coping strategies.

10.01.2022 Spring is here and these warm days are just lovely. This September lets spring into Self Care. Self-care isn't selfish, it's essential. ... No-one's perfect. But so often we compare our insides to other people's outsides created specifically for social media. It's often a veneer. This month we're encouraging everyone to be kinder to themselves (as well as others), especially when things go wrong. Self-care increases our resilience and helps us get more out of life. It also helps us accept others as they are too. Here is the link to the PDF which is best for printing -https://bit.ly/3gNDE04 or here's the whole site - https://bit.ly/2YWeN44
10.01.2022 In todays Peaceful Kids class we talked about the role of our amygdala in keeping us safe and how we can care for our amygdala through midfulness and breathing. I read a beautiful book called Hey Warrior by Karen Young to the children that explains anxiety in a child friendly way. Have you seen this book? I highly reccomend it for both kids and parents alike.
10.01.2022 Who has wanted to enrol their children into the Peaceful Kids program after school at Hornsby North Public School but found the time tricky? I have run this program starting at different times this year and it's been a hit and miss with the different age groups. I can't possibly accommodate everyone's needs unfortunately so it has to be the majority rules.... I need to submit my paperwork for next term's starting dates so here's your chance to have a say. The class will continue to run on a Wednesday afternoon. What time suits you in term 1 and term 2? If there is enough interest and pre booking I can run a special modified class for new Kindy children only in Term 1 that would run for 5 weeks at 45 minutes in length. If that interests you please send me a pm or email me and I will assess the demand. [email protected] If you have a Kindy child what time would best suit you? 3.30 pm 3.45 pm 4 pm 4.15 pm If you have a child in years 1 to 6 what time best suits you? 3.30 pm 3.45 pm 4 pm 4.15pm Please drop a comment below with your thoughts and thank you so much for your support and time in answering.

09.01.2022 This term I have been driving between different families delivering the Peaceful Kids program individually and I still have a few families with just 1 or 2 more sessions left. As always these private classes fill me with joy as children have so much more time to share and explore their inner world. Receiving feedback from children and parents makes me so thankful for these opportunities. Here is my latest email.

08.01.2022 Marcus Aurelius said, Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking. Being mindful helps me with my thinking, attitudes, and happiness. Here are four simple things that I hope may help you this coming week.... Good enough is OK. Pay attention to your expectations. Perfection is a myth that causes so much suffering. Its pedalled all around us in songs, movies, advertising, and social media. Mistakes are OK. I am in competition with no one. My best is good enough. Your best is good enough. Be mindful of what you are consuming. Who we hang out with, what we read, watch, and listen to has a huge effect on how we feel and think. Spend more time with positive people, inspiring music, podcasts, movies, books, and TV-shows Be present. Whatever I am doing I try to be there fully and not drift off into the future or past where worry and anxiety live. Thoughts will drift across my mind however I have the choice not to dwell on them. If I find myself spending more time in the past or future than the present, I will bring my attention back to my breath that is always with me. I focus only on my breathing for a few minutes or I will direct my attention to my senses and take in what is all around me for a short while. I will notice what I can hear, what I can smell, taste, feel and see. By doing either of those things or both together, I can usually realign myself back with the present moment. And finally, kindness plays a huge part in our happiness. The way we think & act towards others reflects how we behave and think about ourselves. The more we practice being kind and compassionate to ourselves the kinder we become towards others. How could you be kinder to those around you right now? How could you be kinder to yourself? Have a wonderful week. 07.01.2022 Happiness is found in the small things all around us. Today as we teeter on the edge of a new month and the last month of a momentous year, invest in yourself b...y being present. It's so easy to slip into mindless living and not notice all the opportunities we have each and every day for happiness, awe, joy, amazement, gratitude, kindness and generosity. Set aside a few moments each day to notice, appreciate and perhaps journal about the small things each day that you are grateful for. It is not just the big moments that help to balance our negativity bias, research shows we need frequent small positive experiences to tip the scales toward happiness. 06.01.2022 One of the most important things we do at Peaceful Kids is to let children know that all their feelings are valid and normal and OK to have. There are no good or bad feelings. All feelings are OK. We all experience emotions and we all express them in our own unique way. Most of the time it is the attachment and belief we have around the feelings and the behaviour that we attribute to these feelings that causes grief and suffering. Peaceful Kids helps children understand the l...ink between their feelings, thoughts and emotions and they learn healthy ways to express and manage them. Learning effective coping skills and healthy self-regulation habits in childhood builds a child's emotional intelligence which supports a more stable and healthy transition into adulthood. Emotional Intelligence is incredibly important in a teen’s development. There is considerable evidence pointing to its positive role in helping students deal with stress and their academic studies, develop and maintain healthy relationships, and handle the transitions facing them. 03.01.2022 I was chatting to a parent the other day who was asking, how do we as parents manage our own emotional and mental health when there is so much to do. As a parent of 4 children, some with special needs I know one of the most important lessons for me was learning to have compassion for myself. That sounds a little airy fairy i know....but when i unpack how that might look in my day to day life it may be as simple as letting go of the things I can not control.... That might look like letting go of the need to have the dishes done in the morning, it might be not worrying about how my hair is when i head out to the park, it might look like being happy with just playing with the kids all day and letting the housework go. It might be allowing my body to rest when it needs to instead of trying to keep up this impossible task of having everything done all the time. Doing all the things all the time. Letting go might be turning off my phone and computer and not being there for everyone else and instead allowing myself to be fully present for myself and my child. Letting go is not always easy. Often it's a process of gradual softening first before I can open my hands to let go of whatever it was I was grappling with. Today on this beautiful Sunny Sunday I invite you to soften your hold on the things you have no control over. Give yourself permission to let go of those things and just notice how that feels. #mindfulness #wellbeing #mentalhealth #parenting #Wellness #MindfulMums #mindfulparenting #attunement #heartfulness #mindfulliving #heartcenteredliving #heartcentredminds #peacefulkids #PeacefulParents
03.01.2022 Happy Friday beautiful people. What accomplishment are you most proud of this week? I have been studying and preparing for an international session I co-facilitated his morning. I wobbled a few times for sure but I totally faced my fear and did it anyway. You can read more on my other page Heart Centred Minds.... My self-talk this past 3 weeks in preparation has been a constant mantra of 'progress, not perfection'. I have had to constantly dip my toes into the waters of compassion and notice when I was moving out of my resilient zone. Remember that your resilient zone is simply 'your OK zone" You are allowed to mess up, stumble, trip, and fall. None of us learned to walk in one day, one week, or one month. Learning to walk takes time and practice, just as parenting does. Lots of time Thank goodness huh. I have 4 sons, I have been a parent for over 30 years and I am still learning. Today as we finish the week, take a moment to look back at what you have achieved through the lens of kindness and compassion. Wherever you find yourself today celebrate and remember we are aiming for progress, not perfection.
