23.01.2022 More from my ten years in business series, today I’ll be taking all things @mountzeroolives and Richard Seymour. As you may remember, the idea for my business started in an olive grove in the Grampians. That olive grove was founded by Richards parents: Jane and Neil Seymour. Absolute pioneers of biodynamic farming and of the quality of food that Melbourne’s food scene is built on. About eight years ago Jane introduced me to Richard, who was running Mount Zero Olives. I’ve bee...n on their board and working behind the scenes with MZ ever since. Some of the things I love about this company: * their indigenous collaboration which harvests the most incredible pink lake salt * their commitment to showcasing Australian produce * their unrelenting passion for sustainability * their ethical approach to absolutely everything * their produce. It’s epic, and natural, healthy food * how they champion Melbourne’s good scene * the farm, and all of her beautiful olive trees It’s been an incredible honour to work with this company for the last eight years. One of the reasons I love working in small business is how many parts I get to work across. Richard and I have worked on business plans, websites, we’ve recruited together, I’ve written copy, and plotted and monitored their finances and business strategy for eight years and counting. If you want to see how purpose led business works? Look no further than @mountzeroolives and know that I’ve played a small and important role behind the scenes. Proud and privileged to be involved @ Mount Zero Olives

22.01.2022 Another memory from my last ten in business. This one again sits in the awesome column and is the manifestation of everything I dreamed about when I started Peach I had the pleasure of meeting this man, Daniel Reaper of Job Site Recyclers in mid 2012. We had a few coffees and got to know each other. I remember Dan saying to me I don't know what you’re going to do, but I’m ready for you to do it for us.... To which I replied That’s ok Dan, I know exactly what I’m going to do for you, and I can’t wait. We’ve worked closely together for the last eight years. I’m their CFO, occasional recruiter, marketer, copywriter, grant writer, board member and more. These are some of the things I’ve done for this incredible company: - create multiple business plans and a financial forecast and monthly reporting system spanning eight years - formed a shareholders board, which I love attending - lots of copy (I bet you didn’t know I write copy sometimes ) - applied for and succeeded in winning a very large Victorian grant that created over 20 new jobs - launched three websites, the latest of which was launched this week - facilitated the creation of a cutting edge, custom built software platform that has transformed their business. This eight year relationship has been so fulfilling for me. The business now employs 120 humans and is the most diverse workforce I’ve ever seen. There are people from almost every corner of the world employed there. The family owned business services the construction industry and is changing the nature of the industry itself. Sustainability is at the heart of this business model. They keep building sites clean (think bobcats, not brooms) and then they do something remarkable. They recycle 95% of the waste they take away. We celebrated a milestone this week that I can barely get my head around. This week they clocked over 1 MILLION cubic metres recycled. Picturing that amount of waste being saved from landfill makes my fingers tingle. Dan, I am so glad you gave me permission to do whatever it is you’re going to do eight years ago. Thank you for showing me and us how good business can be done @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

21.01.2022 Continuing with the theme of my favourite and most difficult memories of my business so far...enter this wonderful woman @emma__lockwood Emma and I met through mutual friends and hit it off straight away. Emma had launched her mortgage broking business a few years earlier and I’d been running Peach for a few years too. We made the great decision to look for an office to share and eventually found our business home in a shopfront in Elwood. It was perfect. Sunny, in the heart... of the village and we were ready to take on the world together. On our first day in the office we did a crap job of building our desks and drawers, sat at our desks and then looked at each other and cracked up laughing at ourselves. We were green, we were keen. And we were doing it together We spent the next few years working side by side. Sharing the ups and downs of life and business. We were both growing professionally and personally. And the only thing we could never agree on was the temperature of the office I eventually took over the office lease while Emma moved onto her next space. We created a beautiful and cosy space that was such a welcoming place for me, my staff and my clients. Tears were shed there. Wine was enjoyed there. Ideas were born and businesses were launched from there. Emma, I’m so grateful for those few years in that office. You are a bloody excellent finance broker (seriously, check here out @emma__lockwood) and friend. Here’s to the next ten years @ Elwood, Victoria, Australia

20.01.2022 Merry merry. Happy festivus. Merry Christmas. Happy holidays. My work life is now over for the year, and I’m about to switch my brain to rancho relaxo mode. Thank you to everyone who has worked with me this year. The trust you put in me and the vulnerability you show while opening your business up to me is epic. I will never get over that and will always be grateful for each of you.... Thank you to everyone who has supported me in other ways this year too. The friends I’ve made through my business have been so special to me. Thanks for showing up, for making me laugh and letting me vent occasionally too. Enjoy your downtime. Stay safe. Hope you get to look at some beautiful nature like this perfect flowering silver princess in the photo. My favourite plant.

20.01.2022 The final instalment of my ten years in business series. How could this brilliant human not be included? That smiling face right there belongs to Cherie from @thedigitalpicnic. You know this company as the absolute queens of social media. They walk the walk: managing social media for a small group of incredible businesses. They teach too : running custom corporate and NFP training sessions. They empower: running exceptional, inclusive and empowering social media workshops fo...r small businesses and creatives. They also lead: Cherie is redefining what an agency can look like. How staff can be treated and included in a business. She writes from the heart, and is the most captivating copywriter and storyteller. Her words dance across the page and have us all waiting for the next story she’s going to tell us. Me? I met Cherie about three years ago and legitimately nearly fell off my chair when she asked me to come and work with her. In those three years I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Cherie, her GM Cat and her team as @thedigitalpicnic has grown into a progressive and purpose led business doing great things. I’ve shared my knowledge of business and finances with Cherie and seen her financial literacy get stronger and stronger. I’m proud to be a tiny part of this business and community. Wherever Cherie is there’s community, and she’s made me feel like a part of hers since the day we met. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with values led leaders like Cherie. Cherie, thank you for showing us how business can truly be such a force for good. Proud to know you

17.01.2022 My most challenging and awesome memories from my ten years as a business owner... This one again lives in the challenging column. In the last few months of 2012 (just over 2y in business) I had the displeasure of working with two business owners who became bad debts. The two men ran different businesses and didn’t know each other. It was dead unlucky that I was working with both of them at the same time.... One of them bullied me, bullied my staff, and accused me of making errors in work that was done by someone else. The other had no intention of ever paying my invoices after an already stressful and panic filled project. This period of my life was incredibly stressful and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. It was probably the catalyst for years of ill health which I’m still recovering from today. Eight years later. Here are some of the things I learned from this experience: - It’s (so much!) better to say no to a client than work with one that won’t pay you. - Word of mouth referrals that come from existing clients (the ones you love working with) are almost always the right clients to work with. - Some people will not listen to reason, and the only way to communicate with them is with short, sharp communication that leaves no room for rebuttal. - No client, project, opportunity or money is worth ill health. I didn’t take on any new clients for the next year. I just didn’t have the energy or resilience. I did make it to New York about eight months after this clusterbubble though (see my last post). I've learned to become circumspect about which clients I say yes and no to. I’m solo in business and in life (which comes with many positives), and it means that I am it. There’s no partner, salary, savings or trust fund paying my bills if Peach isn’t performing. If you’re solo too? You can become financially independent through your business. And you can do it while running a values led business. I’m doing it. Warts and all.

16.01.2022 Following on from my reminiscing about the last ten years of Peach... There’s no way I could leave out this human and this business. Drew and I met at a local networking event, got on like a house on fire and spent the next six months working on his start up: Port Phillip Pedicabs. I’d launched Peach a few months earlier and was ready to sink my teeth into something great. I started working with Drew on his business plan and ended up working really closely with him through t...he launch and early days of his business. I was the business manger + copywriter + accountant and more and it was a sheet tonne of fun and startup enthusiasm. I’ll never forget the phone call from the police. They were letting me know they’d found a pedicab that had been stolen, a few km from where it usually lived at the Sea Baths in St Kilda. The gears were all busted up and I pushed that bloody pedicab by hand into a squally headwind for what felt like forever. Drew was away working (he had a super dangerous day job as a commercial diver) so it was me or no one! That business was so much fun and with such a beautiful purpose behind it. Drew has now moved on to his latest venture: taking in recycling the vast amount of plastics in the ocean. Yep, he’d a good egg. Thanks for such a great ride Drew and everyone involved in Port Phillip Pedicabs @ St Kilda Beach

14.01.2022 Today marks a pretty special day for me: Ten years in business. T-E-N Years! It was an ordinary day (apart from working at home thanks to Covid) spent working on my clients businesses and a few client sessions too. I'm incredibly privileged to work with the businesses I do. Helping you to make great business decisions lights me up. I love what I do, I love working with purpose led business owners and I love the freedom and flexibility I have created for myself. ... I've been reflecting on my decision to create Peach, and the incredible ride that I've been on as a business owner in the last ten years. I could never have predicted where this business would have taken me and the people I would meet as part of it. Over the next week or so I'm going to share with you some of my favourite memories and moments as part of this challenging, awesome, fun, hard, stressful, expansive, gratitude filled ten years

06.01.2022 Yesterday I celebrated my business turning ten years old. I thought it'd be fun to share some of my most treasured and difficult moments as a business owner. How could I start with anything other than this glorious woman? It was on a weekend away in the Grampians in 2010 with my friend Jennine that Peach was born. You see, Jennine is a graphic designer (www.redmc.com.au - check our her beautiful work) and had been working for herself for a few years. She could see that I was...n't fulfilled with my work and had been very gently encouraging me to think outside my square. It was on that weekend that we popped into the cafe at Mount Zero Olives for a cuppa tea and to get out of the wild weather after a hike. I had the great fortune of a poignant conversation with one of the founders of Mount Zero: Jane Seymour. Jane was looking for someone with my skill set and wasn't expecting that skill set to wander into the cafe on that rainy day. By the time I was back in Melbourne I knew I was going to start my business. I knew who I was going to work with and had an idea of what I could do for them. The name Peach came in the middle of the night and before long Peach was made real. It all felt so organic. When I called my friend Jennine to ask her to create my branding for me, the stars were even more aligned. I'd forgotten that she'd grown up surrounded by peach trees in her family orchard, and the rest is history. Jennine, thank you. That weekend and your gentle encouragement was the momentum I needed to launch my own business. And I'm bloody proud of what I've achieved since.

04.01.2022 My most challenging and awesome memories from my ten years as a business owner... This one lives very much in the challenging column. This photo was taken by me, standing against my bedroom wall with my fancy camera on 28 Dec 2011. I was taking my own photo because I was broke and wouldn't dream of asking one of my photographer friends to take my photo without payment. I used this as my professional headshot for quite a few years and I still love it.... This was a few days before a challenging and poignant New Years Eve for me. I had been in business for almost 18 months and it was the second year in a row that I had less than $1 in my bank account on NYE. I had 37c in there that year. The Christmas holidays were really hard for me in those early years because my clients didn't need my services, and I hadn't reached an income level that allowed me to put money away for it. I was in the privileged position of having family who could have helped my financially, but I was mostly too proud to ask. And I knew that I was broke rather than poor, and that I would get through it. Believe me, I acknowledge my privilege. That New Years Eve I set a ridiculous goal for someone with 37c in her bank account. I set myself a goal of heading to New York, for a month, that June. I picked New York because I wanted to set myself a target of somewhere expensive. Somewhere I hadn't been before, that would feel like I'd "made" it once I was there. What the girl in this photo didn't know was that things weren't going to get easier just yet. But I did get myself to New York. I did spend a month there and it was *only* 18 months after I set that goal for myself. I truly don't think I would have been able to pull myself out of that financial hole without a stupid big goal. And that's was how I ended up in New York eighteen months later. I'm nothing if not transparent, and I will keep doing my best to tell my business story warts and all

03.01.2022 Continuing with my most awesome and challenging moments from my ten years as a business owner...and an awesome memory right here In late 2010 I had the great fortune of meeting these two incredible women. Sharon and Rhiannon. Mother and daughter, firecrackers, passionate advocates for people with spinal cord injuries. These ladies had a dream to open a spinal cord injury recovery and wellness centre. I had the pleasure of working with them on the business plan, creating a ...not for profit, and then going on to raise $50K at a gala ball which became the foundation for the NFP to become real. It wasn’t easy. We worked our guys out. I devoted almost all of my time to making this dream a reality for six months. Mainly as a volunteer. I learned so much from these two. Rhiannon has a spinal cord injury and is a quadriplegic. Her sheer determination, the support of her mum and the right approach to recovery means that Rhiannon is able to do many things the doctors claimed she could never do. She lives an independent life with a significant amount of mobility won by her hard work, mindset and commitment to her wellbeing. The ladies wanted other injured Australians to have the opportunity to recover, in their own way. @thenextstepscirecovery has now been open for six years. The wellness centre is a home for injured athletes from all walks of life. They train the whole person - mind, body and soul. They believe that anything is possible. Words are important. Sometimes they can be the difference between independence and not having control over your body. Possible is a word that means a great deal to the sci community. I am so proud to know these women. And proud to have been a small part of the creation of this incredible wellness centre. Rhiannon is a life coach, model, speaker and more. You can follow her adventures @rhiannontraceymywheellife These humans are truly being the change @ The Next Step Spinal Cord Injury Recovery

02.01.2022 My most challenging and awesome memories from my ten years as a business owner... This memory sits very pretty in my awesome column, gives me all the feels and makes me outrageously proud. The two incredible women in this photo are Lucy and Rosie Thomas. Sisters. Besties. Big-hearted, talented, kind, giving and creative. The Co-Founders are recipients of an Order of Australia Medal, recognising their service to youth, and contribution to tackling bullying through their work ...leading Project Rockit , and some of the most humble people you'd meet. We met through mutual friends and bonded over our mutual love of taking in the sights and sounds of our local bar. When I heard about Project Rockit I was watched and cheered from the sidelines. Occasionally contributing to their business over coffees and phone calls where we spitballed ideas and talked through the opportunities that were coming their way. It wasn't too long after that, 2013 in fact, that Project Rockit became a beloved client of Peach and we have worked together ever since. As if working with Australia's youth-driven movement against bullying and hate at Project Rockit wasn't enough to keep my cup full? Working with these two humans has been an experience that has hit all of my feels. I adore these ladies. I adore their business, and every one of their staff. I love their ideas and how they have grown so much with their business. You have taught me so much about inclusivity, equality and respect. Rosie and Lucy, I am forever grateful for your friendship. Being one of your mentors is an incredible honour. If you want to see what purpose led, social impact business is? It's right here, with Project Rockit and the Thomas sisters. PROJECT ROCKIT
