25.01.2022 One of the more controversial topics in running the past 10yrs or so. Foot strike and braking forces. Heres an interesting, if a bit technical heavy, article on the science and research of foot strike positioning.

24.01.2022 Lessons learned the hard way is how I would describe my race last Saturday. It was the Trex Redlands State Championships. I have had some good races of late and was really looking forward to going out and giving it a good crack. Water temperature was 24 deg and really pleasant. It wasnt a wetsuit swim, so I asked the TA tech officials if we could wear swim skins/fast suit, as I was keen to try mine out. Got the verbal ok and we were ready to rock and roll. The swim leg was c...haotic, especially at the first turn, with me being caught midpack and arms and legs going everywhere. I felt I was a bit slow and was then starting to think about getting in and smashing the bike. Turns out the swim course was about 200m long I had fun on the bike, making up a number of places, and this was when it came crashing down for me. Coming into T2 one of the TA officials came up to me and gave me a red card. I was told I could continue my run leg to finish but to come and see them when I finished. I was a bit confused. I ran hard, over took a few more, but didnt go flat out. I caught up with the officials after the race and was informed I would be DQd because of my swim skin. They had gone through transition and inspected the swim skins used by everyone, and apparently mine didnt meet TA regulations. The material on the chest piece was non compliant with their rules. I explained that I was verbally told we could wear them for the swim, and I researched with the manufacturers website that it was suitable for non wetsuit swims, but to no avail. It was written there, in the rules and It wasnt allowed. So my ignorance cost me, what could have been 12th Overall and 3rd in AG at the Nissan State Champs. Lesson learned. Now to train for, and smash out, another result at the National Champs in Feb 2020. See more

24.01.2022 Well, last off road Tri for the season, Trex Championships. A great day for it. Water temp was a balmy 19deg, the MTB course was fast and grippy, and the run leg was tough as always. I was happy with my time, and ended with a great result- 1st in age group. So time for a bit of a rest this afternoon, head to Wild Horse@Night with Kelly, then head back tomorrow for a 45km MTB ride to complete the Dirt Master Challenge. Thanks to Jack from Moreton All Body Care for doing some running repairs on my legs earlier this week, and to Nathan from Morayfield Super Cycles for keeping the bike rolling fast and a few last minute bits and pieces.

24.01.2022 Flying at this mornings CRR 10km handicap run. I wore my new Skechers Go Meb Speed 5. A nice shoe for a quick 5 or 10km.

23.01.2022 An interesting article on what other professional runners think of the Nike Next%/VF4% shoes. I personally love following the change in footwear technology, the other manufacturers will catch up. But as mentioned, you dont get the results if you dont put in the work, the shoes wont run the race for you. https://www.outsideonline.com//elite-marathoners-nike-vapo

23.01.2022 Exciting news for our local running community. The Jetty2Jetty Fun Run has been moved to Sunday the 4th of October. This has been a favourite event of mine for some time, and is the course that I achieved my half marathon PB. Distances available include 3km, 5km, 10km and 21.1km. The date is 12 weeks away. If you are looking to make a post Covid running statement, this could be the event for you. If Covid hasnt been kind to your fitness, I can personalise a come back plan for any of these distances. Your plan would be designed around your needs and what you can achieve each week. It wont be a generic, one size fits all. Mention this post and Ill do a special Covid Come Back Run Training Program for you for $100. Dont leave it too long to start. Let me know your interest in the comments below or PM me.

22.01.2022 I said good bye to the Trek Stealth bomber today. A bit sad, as it was a great ride. Going to the home of a young racer, so still might get to see it out and around.

22.01.2022 One of my fave events rolled around again- the Old Hidden Vale Dingo Duo. Its a 5km trail run/40km MTB/5km trail run. This year it was hot (33deg) dusty and very dry. At least it wasnt sweaty, it instantly dried to a salty crust . Lucas did the Dingo Dash and brought home the bling, taking first place in the U14, and I came home with Silver in a time of just on 3hrs. It might be my last race on my Trek Top Fuel stealth bomber, with some plans underway for an upgrade. Ill keep you all posted.

21.01.2022 Like so many others, I too watched Eluid Kipchoge break the 2hr mark for the marthon distance on Saturday afternoon. What a feat of performance, and Im glad I got to witness it. Since then the controversy has started over the footwear he used, the prototype from Nike called the Alphafly, and whether it should be legal or should it be banned because of its performance enhancing benefits. I might put my thoughts on that matter in another post. But then l came across this artic...le in Triathlete magazine. The World IM Champs were held in Kona on the weekend also, and as usual, pretty extreme conditions. Jan Frondeno set a new course record, wearing a yet to be released Asics Carbon Fibre plated shoe, running a 2:42 marathon. But I havent come across any complaints about his choice in footwear and that it is not available to all athletes (as written in IAAF rules, and yes I know this is Tri). So how is any of this fair and equitable to all athletes if some athletes get access to equipment not available to others? https://triathlonmagazine.ca/featu/frodenos-fast-footwear/ See more

21.01.2022 And this is Bumblebee. A Scott Spark. It is faaasssttt! Thanks to Morayfield Road Super Cycles for the great service and looking after me.

21.01.2022 I came across this today, and found it really interesting. Ive been trying to explain the Load vs Capacity mechanism of injury for some time now. Kevin Maggs has put together this great little video that helps explain it. One point I find really interesting as both a coach and athlete is the role of carefully planned stress and recovery. An overload of stress can lead to injury, and complete reduction of load can lead to decreased tissue capacity, also contributing to injury. Its a delicate balance. https://vimeo.com/339686848

21.01.2022 Run leg, Qld Cross Tri Championships 2019.

19.01.2022 New dates for the postponed Tre-x Event at Ewen Maddock. Just gives you more time to train

19.01.2022 Welcome to 2019. Its shaping up to be a big year, and to kick start it off, Ive redesigned my logo for this years racing. Im hoping to go back to racing some tris and multi sport events again this year, along with my running and mountain biking. Some lofty goals in the pipeline, and hoping the body holds together for all the training

18.01.2022 Ok, knees feeling better, so Im in.

17.01.2022 The Peak Feet Multisport crew out pacing some of the local junior talent. Im especially proud of Seth, who six weeks ago asked for a running program to help him break the 20min barrier for 5km. So I designed one for him, and followed him along the way. Right on 6wks he came home at the Central Lakes parkrun in 19:37, what a fantastic effort Seth! Ava ran with Kelly and set a new PB and Levi ran with Tina. A new program will be underway for a Half Marathon debutant this week too. Now my training is easing back for a couple of weeks (not that the events are, with the Trex Championships and R & R duathlons coming up), so if you have any questions about a running program, or running technique, hit me up.

17.01.2022 Well, its been fully hectic these past few weeks, with Operation Xterra Rotorua in full swing. Ive been hitting the pool for early morning coached swim session, in an effort to improve my technique, and hopefully pick up some speed. On the weekend I got to try out some new toys that will help me to a great race next month. The new wetsuit is a Tyr Hurricane Cat 5. I upgraded as my Huub suit was always a bit on the small side, and two years of not wearing didnt help lol. ...The new Tyr has super buoyancy built into the chest and legs to help with body position in the the water, and core control panels to help stabilise the abdominal and hip area to prevent fish tailing and reduce fatigue over longer swims. Its a little stiff still, being so new, but it was fast! The new shoes are a trial. Ive always wondered what the On Cloud shoes felt like, so when I heard a good mate of mine, Mark Dumbell, was one of the Australian Reps for On, we got him in to give us a demo at work. I picked up a set of Cloudventure Peaks to take for a spin at Bunyaville parkrun on Saturday morning. I set a 30sec PB for the course, and the shoes felt great. Softer in the heel contact than I was expecting, but still firm on the toe off. Im looking forward to taking them to North Habour parkrun for a spin this weekend! There is some more new kit on the way for Xterra, but Ill keep that under wraps until it arrives. Thanks for reading and have a great day everyone.

13.01.2022 I just want to say a big thank you to these guys for helping me out on my journey. Morayfield Road Super Cycles always do great work keeping my quiver, or what Kelly would call a fleet, of bikes in tip top shape. Nathan, Jeff and Dave are great guys, bike nuts, and give great service. They stock a range of brands, across road, MTB, BMX and scooters. They service all brands, and I can testify they do amazing work on suspension components. So if youre in the market, or thinking about a new bike, support a local business, and see these guys.

13.01.2022 Various distances on offer. A great local event, and a tradition on the Australian Trail Running calendar.

12.01.2022 It was great to meet up today with Chris Adams from Injinji Performance Products to check out the latest gear from Topo Athletic, Ultimate Direction and Injinji. Let me tell you there are some exciting products coming! My first look at Topo shoes, and I must say they are pretty impressive. Will be a great alternative for those looking for something to replace their Altra running shoes. A range of trail, hybrid and road running shoes. I cant wait to get my feet in a pair and test them out.

12.01.2022 Big morning out on the BVRT this morning. A small, and really fun event put on by AAA Racing and Out There Cycling. Was warm out in the open, but the trail did offer a fair amount of shade. Really happy with my finish.

12.01.2022 Well no surprises here at all, but nice piece of work from @danielbonanno Christian Barton and the crew at LaTrobe Conclusion The relationship between strike pa...ttern and injury risk could not be determined, as current evidence is limited to retrospective findings. Considering the lack of evidence to support any improvements in running economy, combined with the associated shift in loading profile (i.e., greater ankle and plantarflexor loading) found in this review, changing strike pattern cannot be recommended for an uninjured RFS runner. #foot #footstrike #forefoot #rearfoot #injury #bartoldclinical #podiatry #podiatrist #physio #physiotherapist #physicaltherapy

12.01.2022 Good luck to Peta Vee. Taking on the huge challenge of the Blackall100. You got this.

10.01.2022 3 mini sprint Tris Back2back2back, to practice transitions today. Pretty happy with the consistency. It put Strava in a bit of a spin as it recorded all 15 segment separately

08.01.2022 ITU World Cross Tri Champs were held last night. Congrats to all who made the start line and competed. Water temp was about 14.9deg, and air temp about 19deg with nice sunny conditions. We are in awe of the training, work and dedication the athletes put in to get there and compete.

07.01.2022 WOW, Queenstown really turned it on for us today. Spectacular views, sensational conditions. Overall a great Mara!

06.01.2022 I must also say a big thank you to my wife, Kelly, for putting up with my obsessive training and everything else . To Moreton All Body Care for looking after my wearing out body. To Morayfield Road Super Cycles for keeping my bikes in shape and Running The Numbers Chartered Accounts for keeping the financials on track. Thanks also to everyone who has supported my on my journey, it has been greatly appreciated

05.01.2022 Done! And wow that was hard. Ive done about 15 marathons now so I wanted this one to be a bit different. Coach Dave has said to me I have run them too conservative, and I needed to unleash. So with this Iso mara I decided to break it down into segments and run them as quick as possible. I went 12.2, 10, 8, 6, 4 & 2km, all on the same road course. At time it was a real struggle- especially mentally, and other times it felt good- so just like a full marathon. I feel just as beat up physically, as full marathon as well. But so glad I did it. Thank you everybody who partcipated and contributed their stories to the 42.2km in 42hrs page, it was a great inspiration. Now I might just rest up for the next day or so

05.01.2022 Just under 3wks until this iconic trail event takes place. Looks like I'll be out at check point 7 make sure everyone is running well and staying safe. Its a great option for those looking to do their first ultra event.

05.01.2022 Sunshine Coast Marathon 2019 done and dusted. My 8th running of this great event, and a new PB. Overall a 2:58:13. Tactically almost perfect for me. I ran the first 21.1km in 1:30:30 and negative split the 2nd 21.1km in 1:27:45. Had a really fun first half running with one of my old touch buddies, Mel Charlton, who I havent seen for years. Felt good at the 32km mark, and had a feeling that a good last lap of 10km would see me home under 3. So se5 sail and just let the legs ...set the pace. My lap splits from the last 10 were 4:08, 4:09, 4:05, 4:03, 4:09, 4:06, 4:03, 4:06, 4:03, 4:01. I a must really happy with these split. My 5km splits were really consistent, and I was super happy with no fade . My shoes today were Nike Vaporfly Flyknit4%, and nutrition was Infinit Jet Fuel. A huge thank you to my long suffering wife, Kelly, who puts up with me getting out of bed far too early, out running far too late at night and for far too long on the weekends. Love you lots, and thank you for letting me chase these crazy dreams. See more

03.01.2022 Survived my first day. New adventures begin.

03.01.2022 So these happened last night. Im a bit excited. Thanks to Brad at The Running Company - Sunshine Coast for hooking me up. Apparently only 180 were released in Australia. I plan on giving them a wear in, then Ill post up a full report when Ive got some kms in them.

03.01.2022 Well this weekend should have been the In2Adventure Dirt Master event. A 47km MTB Race, followed by a trail half marathon. It was originally postponed to May, due to Covid restrictions, then later cancelled for 2020. So I decided to do it anyway, Iso style. I did it in my local area, so the ride was a couple of km extra, make up for the bitumen out and back. The 21.1km was on the Cab-Wam Rail Trail as there is plenty of space, as well as being just the right length. Had a blast doing both, but miss my racing buddies. I hope everyone else is trying to stay strong, and finding things to do to stay motivated.

02.01.2022 Running shoes have always intrigued me. Ive been running a long time and have seen a number of trends come and go. So when Nike released the Vaporfly 4%s a couple of years ago my interest grew. These shoes were developed for the Breaking 2 project- the attempt to break 2hours for the marathon distance. Their limited availability has made them even more desirable. So now Ive had them for a couple of weeks, and completed a couple of runs in them, I think I can pass comment o...n their performance. The 4% in their name, comes from the research NIke has conducted, and found that the shoe made runners 4% faster, given all other factors remained relatively constant. Wow, was the first thing that came to mind when I took them out for a spin at my local parkrun. The first km flew by in just 3min 18sec. I was pretty sure I couldnt keep this pace up, so I eased back and settled down a bit. What I noticed was the springy cushion that the shoe has. They are soft like the Hoka Clifton 1, but they have a carbon fibre propulsion plate, which sends you forward after toe off into a feeling of extended flight phase. It does feel a little weird to start with, but it settles after a while. Its like running on little pogo sticks. Today, before running a quick 10km in the VF, I warmed up in my Adidas Boosts (which I love), and then put the Nikes on to run. The first thing I noticed was the stack height. They do feel like youre wearing spongey mini stilts. The shoe doesnt have much flexibility, but I does have a rocker built in, which rolls you forward onto your toes, where the carbon plate gets to works its magic. The cushion is definitely softer than the Adidas boost foam. They feel easier on the knees, and I didnt notice my irritated right gastroc. Do I like them? YES. Are they fast? Yes. Do they make me a faster runner? Yes. Will they make you a faster runner if you dont do the training? No, there are no free lunches

02.01.2022 I had a really interesting weekend, with Sunday seeing me do my first level of ASCA Strength & Conditioning Coaching. One of the fun tools that was raised in discussion was the Toe Pro dynamometer. Its designed to measure forces exerted by the intrinsic foot muscles, and we can tell where there are imbalances which may contribute to injuries, falls or even poor performance. We can measure, record, implement rehabilitation and then remeasure to monitor progress. Looking forward to putting to work.

01.01.2022 An interesting article. But jut another explanation of "do what makes you feel happy." We are all here on our own journey. One thing that I have noticed recently is how many people will undervalue their choice of distance when discussing events. "Im just doing the 5km." or "Im just doing the short one today." Theres no "just " about it, its your distance, so own it. https://trailrunnermag.com//you-dont-have-to-run-ultras.ht

01.01.2022 Getting ready for tomorrows gravel grind. 68km of BVRT in the Harlin Duathlon. Bring it on!
