17.01.2022 Did you know that you may be eligible to receive 5 FREE Physiotherapy visits per calendar year through Medicare (under the CDM scheme)? If you have had a chronic musculoskeletal complaint (present for at least 6 months) you should see the attached link and speak to your GP for more information. Medicare only pays around $52 per session so some clinics will charge the gap to make up the full service fee. At PEAK HEALTH PHYSIOTHERAPY though I have decided to be "GAP FREE" for Medicare treatments so as to make health care more accessible to those in need. 16.01.2022 WE HEAR THE TERM "CORE STABILITY" SO MUCH NOW BUT DO YOU ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT IT MEANS AND WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT? In order to protect the spinal cord & spine, allow movement and carry loads we require core strength. This is provided by co-ordination between the passive structures (eg vertebrae), active structures (eg. muscles) and our control of these (neurological systems). This is quite a complex process as it includes control of the brain, sensory input, muscle output, joi...nt actions and correction of any abnormal or adaptive behaviours which have developed. Our CORE consists of the deep muscles which attach to the lumbar spine and can have a stabilizing effect on it. (See the pic: Transverse abominus, Multifidus, Pelvic Floor and Diaphragm). People suffering from LOWER BACK PAIN have impairment of this deep muscle system and Physio treatment should be aimed at normalizing their function through specific muscle activation/control training. There is no single exercise or one particular muscle which will achieve this. Recovery, &/or achievement of optimal stability/sports or work specific function, requires retraining to co-ordinate all components, ability to isolate specific muscles, progression with functional variation to gain greater strength, control and stability in all positions. WHY SHOULD WE ALL WORK ON OUR CORE STABILITY? * To reduce the stress placed on our spine * To provide a stable base for other joints (eg. hips) in order to also reduce the strain on other muscles * To increase power generation (the more stable the base the more power can be generated eg. to kick or lift loads) * To avoid pain and the development of pathology, such as disc bulges or spinal arthritis) * To improve our quality of life with improved function HOW DO I KNOW WHAT MY WEAKNESS ARE OR WHICH EXERCISES TO DO? See your Physiotherapist of course! :) (Just make sure that they focus on neuro-muscular control! Going to a Physio who only does passive treatments (eg. heat, machines) will not make any long term difference). You will need a thorough assessment to determine if you have any joint dysfunctions, which muscles are over-active, which muscles are weak, what position/action is normal and which exercises will help you the most. Unfortunately attending a large group core class or following the latest DVD will not necessarily be what is best for you. Some exercises may be too advanced/too basic for you, you may not be activating/controlling your muscles correctly, the exercises may not target your needs and they may not be specific for the requirements for the tasks/sport that you most engage in. Lastly.. in the end it is up to you! Once you have discovered what you need to be doing.. you need to do it! We make the time to service our car, take our pets to the vet, visit the dentist.. don't forget the spine you have is yours for life so best to look after it too!
