23.01.2022 Preach! Thanks Taylored Dog Training! Behaviour is a science, the trainer you choose needs to have a current understanding of the research, not what we thought we knew 20 years ago - because a LOT has changed since then (as with any medicine or psychology). Early in my career I was worried about seeming inexperienced in comparison to others who had 20+ years in the industry. ... A good friend of mine suggested that it wasn't about the number of years, but how much they've evolved in that time (thanks Bev!). 20 years of the same experience (e.g. no continuing education) is very different from 20 years of consistent professional development, learning and changes to best practice methods. Another way to look at this - if your trainer doesn't cringe at the things they were recommending 5 years ago, don't hire them.

19.01.2022 Opportunity to participate in some interesting research on how Covid has affected our lifestyle and our dogs! Survey takes a few minutes and is easy - for trainers and pet parents alike!

13.01.2022 A friendly reminder from a very perfectly imperfect role model - Gus 'The Goodest Boi'(& Gwen, lol) 'It's not a problem if it's not a problem. Your dog doesn't have to be the perfect dog, they just have to be perfect for you'

13.01.2022 Vale Gus Edwards-Kirton Chris, Gwen and I are heartbroken to share that Gus left us peacefully on Saturday afternoon, at home and surrounded by his family. We know many who followed his journey here had met him in classes, consults, seminars, or simply followed his journey here. We are forever grateful to have shared our life with him, and know his friendly, goofy and happy nature impacted everyone he met.... We are so thankful to Gus for being such an incredible teacher to us over the years. He was our rock. Gus The Goodest Boi Forever in our hearts. Through this journey we have been supported so well by our friends, family and Gus' verterinary care team. Thank you to you all. There are many vets around Adelaide that can help your animal pass in the comfort of their own home. While losing a loved one is rather traumatic (the loss, not the process necessarily) and also very personal, we feel this was the best for Gus, but also very comforting for us too. There is also excellent resources out there on dealing with the grief of losing a family member. Be kind to yourselves. And please join us in celebrating the awesomeness of Gus by sharing every day with your furbaby to the fullest - especially by allowing them to be dogs as much as it is safe. Give them a treat for no reason, let them roll in mud or dig, leave things for them to 'hunt' in the backyard. 'Love the dog you're with' -The Good Enough Dog (Nancy Tucker)

12.01.2022 Gwen took her orange toy to where Gus was laying to eat. The empath in me wonders whether she did so because she knows her brother is unwell and she couldnt bear to be a part from him The trainer in me knows we've done so much work on eating and settling on mats, that she just wanted to get comfy, Gus be damned. ... And *that* is exactly what a strong reinforcement history looks like. My work here is done

10.01.2022 I'm sharing this again because I've seen a few different social media threads now explaining (or asking) the difference between classical and operant conditioning. Sometimes a visual of the practical application helps to understand. Here's a video of us working on preparing Gwen for cruciate surgery - by shaving her leg the day before so she could take treats and so the pre-med on the day would be less stressful/ involved. The first half of the video is the application of op...erant conditioning (positive reinforcement for keeping still with her chin on the floor) and the second half is the use of classical conditioning (pairing the scary stimulus of the shaver with a pleasant stimulus of food). The steps are broken down and explained in the video. My application can always be better, but it does show the difference between the two quite nicely. There is always overlap between the two learning procedures as well, however you can choose which you use predominantly based on what the target behaviour/ emotional state is for the dog. Massive thanks to our friend Felice at Puppy Partners for her help with this video - watch the way she breaks things down for Gwen - absolutely awesome!

02.01.2022 So lovely to work as part of a council that does such great community education programs! :)

01.01.2022 Some very cool new research on non-lethal dingo management from one of my supervisors Dr. Bradley Smith! So nice to see people thinking outside the box for wild animal welfare that also benefits farmers too. 'Fred-a-scare'
