25.01.2022 At Fire and Rescue NSW, we are prepared for anything...except being chased by an angry cow. About 12:30pm on Sunday 29 November 2020, Firefighters from Richmon...d Fire Station were conducting hydrant inspections at the Richmond Lowlands when a stray cow was sighted on the roadway. The stray cow must’ve seen red and decided to chase a firefighter on the roadway, who had to mooove out of the way. It's the fastest we've seen this firefighter move in years! Luckily only his ego was bruised and he’s otherwise okay. He was able to compose himself to complete the hydrant inspection. The offender managed to get away. #preparedforanything

22.01.2022 Ever wonder what a ferry bladder looks like? Or what a ferry bladder is? Five 500 US gallon fuel bags, in five dedicated leakproof containers, are placed in the... body of our #RJ85. These components combine to create a ferry system that allows the Canada-based aircraft to fly over long stretches of ocean on the journey between continents, so that the aerial firefighting aircraft can support Australia during their bushfire season. In the picture, the bags are filled with air as part of the testing phase of the complex installation process. #Conairaerialfirefighting

22.01.2022 On this day last year NSW recorded 17 concurrent Emergency Warnings. Communities in the Blue Mountains, Clarence Valley, Richmond Valley, Walcha, Armidale, Namb...ucca, Kempsey, Tenterfield, and the Mid Coast were all being impacted by fire. At 6pm 94 fires were burning across the state. While the losses on that day were significant they could have been far worse were it not for the extraordinary efforts of firefighters and community members. See more

15.01.2022 Today marks 40 years since five young lives were tragically lost battling a bush fire at Waterfall. It was 3rd November 1980 - just before 5am crews were alerted to a bush fire burning near McKell Avenue. Numerous brigades responded to the southern end of the Royal National Park, working to contain a large fire which was burning under mild conditions.... The conditions on the day were cool, the temperature reached 19c, humidity was low and southerly winds prevailed. As the southerly winds increased in strength late afternoon, the fire transitioned from the forested area into heath, increasing the intensity and spread. The fire rapidly headed in a northerly direction towards the Uloola trail. It was on this trail where a fire tanker from Headquarters (Heathcote) Brigade was overrun by fire. It was at this location where five brave firefighters were lost - Steve Crunkhorn, 26, Gregory Rolfe, 24, Vernon Stedman, 21, William Cummings, 21 and David Marshall, 19. The fire was contained days later after burning 2,246 hectares of the Royal National Park. We remember these brave firefighters.

15.01.2022 SEVERE WIND WARNING Source: Bureau of Meteorology For people in parts of Mid North Coast, Hunter and Metropolitan Forecast Districts.... Issued at 4:28 pm Wednesday, 4 November 2020. STRONG AND GUSTY SOUTHERLY WINDS ALONG THE COAST. Weather Situation: A surge of strong southerly winds are forecast to build on Thursday as a low pressure system deepens off the NSW coastline. This low is forecast to quickly move into the Tasman Sea with conditions easing by Friday. DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are possible about parts of the coastline from late Thursday afternoon. Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds early Friday morning as the low pressure system moves further offshore. Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Sydney, Forster, Seal Rocks, Bulahdelah, Nelson Bay, Wallsend, Toronto, Wyong, The Entrance and Woy Woy. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. * Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall. * Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

12.01.2022 Last night I had the privilege to catch up with Darren Nation and his amazing team at the Horsley Park Rural Fire Brigade at their regular Wednesday night meeti...ng. It has been just over nine months since they lost Andrew ODwyer and Geoff Keaton in the Green Wattle Blaze in December last year. They are a tight unit and incredibly well led by Darren. They have looked after and supported each other, especially Andrew and Geoffs families who are such an integral part of their local RFS family. They are now preparing for the forthcoming season, as they always do. They have also been able to recruit new members to their local Brigade who will be joining them wherever they are likely to be deployed. The trucks out the front are named in honour of Andrew and Geoff as a constant reminder of the selfless service they have committed to. I was pleased to once again be able to pay my respects to the memorial out the front of the station and spend some time together, talk about fishing, camping and the NRL and how they were all doing. As PM you so often get to see the best of Australia. Last night was another such opportunity and especially as we remembered Andrew and Geoff.

10.01.2022 Bush fire arson is a crime. The NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW Police Force are committed to fighting bush fire arson. Bush fire arson is dangerous. It can destroy lives, properties, and have long term effects on the environment. It is also costly for the community with the loss of properties, cost of firefighting resources and the disruption to businesses. ... How you can help If you see something that looks out of place, this may be what Police are looking for. If you can, record the details of vehicles such as the make, model and registration of suspicious vehicles. Also take note of the appearance of anyone acting suspiciously. Report suspicious behaviour to Crime Stoppers NSW on 1800 333 000. To report a fire emergency call Triple Zero (000). 09.01.2022 UPDATE!!! We have had our sign fixed !!! A big thanks to Ian .... the handy man and Karen .... the quick dialer, who took time out to get our sign up an...d going again Jacob from HiVis, you are the man Without your help today we wouldn’t have a working sign. The biggest expense today was time and a few phone call. Thank again HiVis!! And a thank you to our fantastic community and friends from out of town for standing behind our brigade. We greatly appreciate your support Why? Just why? Our lovely community here at Long Beach and Maloneys Beach have worked with our brigade to raise money for everything we have. So when vandals continue to brake our equipment, they are also braking your equipment. Since we have had our Fire Danger Rating board, it has been broken several times. This is a cost to the brigade that we really don’t need. On Friday night / Saturday morning someone, who clearly has no respect for the brigade or our community has selfishly broken it good and proper. This time not only has the arrow been broken but the gears that operate the system has been forced one to many times. There is thousands of dollar worth of safety equipment sitting there, doing nothing. A warning system for our community, now useless! The person / people who have done this must not have been effected by fire last season. Or just have no heart. Why would anyone want to damage and destroy equipment that could save lives this fire season.? So now we need to..... A. Fix the damage ( at a cost to us, so it’s a cost to you ) B. Install some sort of protection board or fencing or something ( at a cost to us, so once again, a cost to you ) C. Install a camera or two, so we can catch these people and make them pay for the damage they have done. ( and once again, another cost to us, so..... yep! You guessed it, a cost to you ) We have also had some damage done around the station over time. So far nothing that our hard working volunteers, with a few dollars, have been able to fix. We have recently up-graded our security system. With up-graded cameras that capture a larger area with much clearer footage, so it’s easier to identify anyone doing the wrong thing up there If anyone has any information or has seen anyone doing the wrong thing around ANY of our equipment and station please contact Crime Stoppers or our local police station Photo are from when the board was installed

09.01.2022 Recent rain has resulted in good growth across much of NSW. While this is welcome, it does bring with it the risk of grass fires. This weekend we want everybody to consider what they can do to reduce their fire risk. Now is the time to Get Ready for the fire season.

01.01.2022 North Head Hazard Reduction Burn. I joined the Minister today to inspect the burn and thank the National Parks and Wildlife team and RFS for their work at N...orth Head. The weather conditions were spot on with the rain limiting the smoke and helping with the burn at North Head. We are already preparing for summer and Environment Minister Matt Kean MP is ensuring the National Parks teams are fully equipped! Hazard reduction is just one way of preparing for bush fires it doesn't remove the threat of fire, and it doesn't remove the need for you and your family to be prepared. There will be more hazard reduction burns locally, so please be aware and thank you for your patience

01.01.2022 Some useful information I found shared by a friend. Worth a read That bite of summer has well and truly come early this year and with that heat, comes snakes. ...This article was written by Rob Timmings Rob runs a medical/nursing education business Teaching nurses, doctors and paramedics. Its well worth the read #ECT4Health 3000 bites are reported annually. 300-500 hospitalisations 2-3 deaths annually. Average time to death is 12 hours. The urban myth that you are bitten in the yard and die before you can walk from your chook pen back to the house is a load of rubbish. While not new, the management of snake bite (like a flood/fire evacuation plan or CPR) should be refreshed each season. Lets start with a Basic overview. There are five genus of snakes that will harm us (seriously) Browns, Blacks, Adders, Tigers and Taipans. All snake venom is made up of huge proteins (like egg white). When bitten, a snake injects some venom into the meat of your limb (NOT into your blood). This venom can not be absorbed into the blood stream from the bite site. It travels in a fluid transport system in your body called the lymphatic system (not the blood stream). Now this fluid (lymph) is moved differently to blood. Your heart pumps blood around, so even when you are lying dead still, your blood still circulates around the body. Lymph fluid is different. It moves around with physical muscle movement like bending your arm, bending knees, wriggling fingers and toes, walking/exercise etc. Now here is the thing. Lymph fluid becomes blood after these lymph vessels converge to form one of two large vessels (lymphatic trunks)which are connected to veins at the base of the neck. Back to the snake bite site. When bitten, the venom has been injected into this lymph fluid (which makes up the bulk of the water in your tissues). The only way that the venom can get into your blood stream is to be moved from the bite site in the lymphatic vessels. The only way to do this is to physically move the limbs that were bitten. Stay still!!! Venom cant move if the victim doesnt move. Stay still!! Remember people are not bitten into their blood stream. In the 1980s a technique called Pressure immobilisation bandaging was developed to further retard venom movement. It completely stops venom /lymph transport toward the blood stream. A firm roll bandage is applied directly over the bite site (dont wash the area). Technique: Three steps: keep them still Step 1 Apply a bandage over the bite site, to an area about 10cm above and below the bite. Step 2: Then using another elastic roller bandage, apply a firm wrap from Fingers/toes all the way to the armpit/groin. The bandage needs to be firm, but not so tight that it causes fingers or toes to turn purple or white. About the tension of a sprain bandage. Step 3: Splint the limb so the patient cant walk or bend the limb. Do nots: Do not cut, incise or suck the venom. Do not EVER use a tourniquet Dont remove the shirt or pants - just bandage over the top of clothing. Remember movement (like wriggling out of a shirt or pants) causes venom movement. DO NOT try to catch, kill or identify the snake!!! This is important. In hospital we NO LONGER NEED to know the type of snake; it doesnt change treatment. 5 years ago we would do a test on the bite, blood or urine to identify the snake so the correct anti venom can be used. BUT NOW... we dont do this. Our new Antivenom neutralises the venoms of all the 5 listed snake genus, so it doesnt matter what snake bit the patient. Read that again- one injection for all snakes! Polyvalent is our one shot wonder, stocked in all hospitals, so most hospitals no longer stock specific Antivenins. Australian snakes tend to have 3 main effects in differing degrees. Bleeding - internally and bruising. Muscles paralysed causing difficulty talking, moving & breathing. Pain In some snakes severe muscle pain in the limb, and days later the bite site can break down forming a nasty wound. Allergy to snakes is rarer than winning lotto twice. Final tips: not all bitten people are envenomated and only those starting to show symptoms above are given antivenom. Did I mention to stay still. ~Rob Timmings Kingston/Robe Health Advisory #vrarescue #snakebite
