14.01.2022 A lot of people ask if it is a good idea to add their Bestow Collagen Boost to coffee. This is a common recommendation from producers of collagen powders but I must admit that I am not a fan of the idea. The heat from your coffee will destroy the vitamin C and any antioxidants it contains. So essentially this will reduce its nutritional value. I recommend you take it in water, a smoothie or any other cool drink. Another reason I am not so keen on the idea of adding collagen... to coffee is that for some of us coffee isn’t good for our skin. Coffee is a vasodilator which means it increases the blood flow through our skin’s fine capillary system. This means it can worsen any redness or inflammation in our skin. So if you have a fine sensitive skin that is prone to flushing or you suffer from any type of inflamed skin condition like rosacea, eczema or even acne, coffee will fuel that problem and is not recommended. Coffee also decreases the amount of B vitamins we have circulating in our blood. B vitamins are important skin nutrients and each one of them does something fabulous for skin. I liken them to a super-hero skin vitamin family. B vitamins are also our anti-stress vitamin family. They help our bodies become more resilient to stress so the fact that coffee depletes these important nutrients is another reason to limit your intake. Coffee can also be quite hard on our nervous system. It increases our levels of the stress hormones, adrenalin and cortisol. Essentially it mimics stress in our bodies. This can be an issue if you have a fine, sensitive nervous system that is prone to becoming over stimulated. Or it maybe you tend to drink more coffee when you are stressed. This adds stress to stress! This isn’t true for everyone as it seems we can inherit our level of sensitivity to coffee. Some people feel its effects much more than others. However I would suggest that if you do have a red skin or suffer from an inflamed skin condition you, try cutting out coffee for the sake of your skin. If you are stressed, or you have a fine, sensitive nervous system also look at reducing your coffee intake and see if you feel better.
