25.01.2022 Perhaps the start of a new legacy for Torres Strait... Saltwater Pearl Festival 2021...

24.01.2022 Look out for a our story NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week on SBS News and NITV on the theme "Always was, always will be".

24.01.2022 Any comments on this vessel? Has the lugger lines except the main mast with an additional top gallant

24.01.2022 It was at Kamay (Botany Bay) that James Cook first set foot on the Australian continent. His landing was challenged by two men, from the Gweagal clan of the Dharawal nation, standing on the beach. https://www.nma.gov.au/ex/endeavour-voyage/kamay-botany-bay

23.01.2022 Five years ago I was in Cape Melville whilst working with the Cape Melville, Flinders & Howick Island Traditional Owners on the Recognition Expeditions for the 1899 Pearl Disaster to give recognition to the names and cultures of the crew that were lost. The event itself was, and still is, the worst maritime disaster and largest, most devastating cyclone in Australias history that destroyed 4 schooners, 54 luggers and killed more than 300 of the crew. Half of the Torres Strai...t pearling fleet and half of the crew! Since 1899 these 300 so called "coloured crew" were anonymous, without name or identity, but were from many nations around the world including Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Sea Islands and Singapore. There was also no acknowledgement of two Torres Strait Islander children who, as it was in the day, were with their mothers who were "swimming" for pearl shell when the cyclone struck. In 2015 we placed a temporary memorial listing the 300 or so names that is now housed in the Pearlers Locker museum... but Now just a bit excited that we along with the TOs are now in the final stages of finalising the design of a new memorial and making arrangements for custom and cultural ceremonies to have it installed next to the existing one as soon as our vessels are on the water. Please share any suggestions on memorial design, involvement of family groups to be involved during the ceremony and any potential sponsors. We will be undertaking this voyage and installation on one or more of our historic ships as soon as we are all ready to go.

23.01.2022 Seeking information on a Pearl Lugger ZEPHYR, potentially Broome Lugger built in 1937 for Herbert Kennedy. Went through a few owners and was used by the Royal Australian Navy during WWII, then purchased by the Commonwealth Government. After that had a stint with Paspaleys before being used in the Torres Strait. Any info would be appreciated. As far as we know, did not hold an "A" pearl licence and assume does no longer exist.

23.01.2022 Looking forward to attending with one, maybe two historic Torres Strait pearling luggers and even Cape York mission vessel Stephen Davies.

23.01.2022 A great visit to the Pearlers Locker Museum and the Pearl Lugger Heritage Fleet from the new cadets of the Navy Indigenous Development Program and team with Noel Zaro. Sharing information about pearling, Blackbirding, the Saltwater (Solwata) Club and witnessing the restoration progress of Pearling Luggers ANTONIA and TRITON and learning of the history of the Mission Vessel STEPHEN DAVIES. A visit to the Pearlers Locker museum always has dive pumps, pearl lugger models, outrigger canoes, turtle shells and all things nautically First Nations.

22.01.2022 A NEW LUGGER IN MORE THAN 60 YEARS? WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD NAME FOR A PEARLING LUGGER IF WE BUILT THE FIRST NEW ONE IN 60 YEARS? Today, we were the recipients of a substantial piece of wooden artwork from the late, legendary Shipwright Frank Woodnutt. A keel laid more than two decades ago is longer and larger than our largest lugger ANTONIA A99. This was Franks "Cape Horn" boat that he was building for himself.... Thanks to quick thinking of his son Alan, local lugger owner Rick and a few others, it managed to escape the chainsaw and make it to our yard as the property on which it was located has been sold following Franks passing. We hadnt seen any photos and were expecting a 15m long keel, some deadwood and horn timbers but nothing like this. The craftsmanship and skills of Frank is astounding and when it landed and sat next to the lugger TRITON A82, its size and volume became apparent. What are we going to do with it? Well in the first instance just saving it, storing it safely and thinking about it later. However when it landed we immediately thought "theres the foundation of the first new pearling lugger in more than six decades!!! If we did ever get around to building a lugger from it, or some form of tall ship, black birding vessel or Missionary schooner... what name would we call her?

21.01.2022 Painted by James Wieneke and posted by Mark Clayton who found it in a thrift shop. Titled 'Boat building Thursday Island'.

21.01.2022 TORRES STRAIT FLYER? Any comments on this find?

21.01.2022 So sorry to hear that this could be the end of the Cape and Torres News...

17.01.2022 Had a surprise visit today from Bala Laurie Nona to have a look at where we are at with the restoration of Triton (Yancy Taum) and a yarn about other luggers Antonia, Anniki and the Stephen Davies. Bala reckons it looks a bit different now, particularly when we started the renovations a few years ago. Looking forward to finally getting her back up to the Torres Strait next year.

10.01.2022 Not in our usual area of expertise but does anyone have any information on ATTUNGA, a 65ft ex Heron Island Launch? Apparently sold to a Church in the Torres Strait, possibly 1979 and sunk when it hit a reef. May have also done some work for an oil tanker? Gordon Dunnett is seeking information as he is researching all former Heron Island vessels.

10.01.2022 Former Missionary Vessel and Cape York cargo boat STEPHEN DAVIES achieves registration on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels (HV000798) at the Australian National Maritime Museum. She joins the rest of the fleet including historic pearling luggers ANTONIA, ANNIKI and TRITON.

09.01.2022 Micro-Story: Sonia Minniecon and Mike Smith are co-founders and directors of the SaltwaterClub.Life and the Pearl Lugger Heritage Fleet. They believe Indigenous... maritime cultural heritage has been the missing link in Indigenous experiences. There are only a few historic pearling luggers and missionary vessels remaining. Sonia and Mike say, Our primary aim is to acquire, preserve, restore and repurposethese vessels[and] to return all vessels to service in cultural business, Indigenous maritime heritage tourism, sea country management, education and training. COVID had an impact on their business saying, Like many others, we closed for a few months. However, we were fortunate that we were in a position to suspend all operations...we needed to ensure the safety of our crew and visitors. They plan on re-launching later this year saying, We liken it to the doldrums just something you have to deal with, but we will harness the winds, tides and waves when they are right. Living by the words of friend and musician Seaman Dan, Steady-steady, Sonia and Mike believe Indigenous maritime culture and heritage has been part of history for hundreds of years That history is not going anywhere, and neither are we. Take your time, its more about the voyage than the destination. The Saltwater Club and Pearl Lugger Heritage Fleet deliver iconic, First Nations seafaring cultural heritage adventures & experiences throughout Tropical North Queensland, Cape York and the Torres Strait. To find out more check out their websites: www.pearlingluggers.com.au and www.saltwaterclub.life . Thanks for taking the time to read about another fantastic Indigenous business. 08.01.2022 Torres Shire Council regrettably advises with a heavy heart that Council has made the decision to postpone the Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival, due to be cel...ebrated on Thursday Island from 15 to 18 September 2020. This decision was not taken lightly but was taken because of the changing and widespread impact of COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The health and well-being of our communities and our people were paramount in our decision to postpone and Council feels sure that the community understands and supports our decision. Torres Shire Council would like to thank our community for taking the COVID-19 situation seriously, we ask everyone to continue to observe current Queensland Health advice and follow State and Federal Government directions to help minimise the potential spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) into our vulnerable communities. Together lets make the Festival in 2021 a great success

07.01.2022 2021 will be on the hunt for historic Torres Strait pearling luggers and missionary vessels that went to Papua New Guinea... maybe not the actual vessels as highly unlikely anything survived but lots of information coming in on photos and wreck locations both pre and post WWII

07.01.2022 Torres News making a comeback. Well keep sending through content again... next story about the Missionary Schooner STEPHEN DAVIES.

06.01.2022 Cynthia Lui MP - Member for Cook is the first Torres Strait Islander elected to any Australian parliament. Today she introduced the Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa ...(Torres Strait Islander Traditional Child Rearing Practice) Bill into Queensland Parliament, delivering on our 2017 election commitment. For generations, Torres Strait Islanders have supported their children and each other in loving, supportive extended families, but these family relationships have not been fully recognised in Australian law. This legislation means children and adults who have grown up with traditional adoptive parents will finally have their legal identity match their cultural identity, supporting and strengthening their connection to community and culture.
