24.01.2022 Bruxism is the involuntary clenching, grinding and gnashing of the teeth. Approximately 50% of the population does this occasionally and 5% are regular, forceful tooth grinders, often while sleeping. Aggressive grinding can cause the teeth to shorten in length, resulting in a loss of vertical dimension. This can drastically change one's appearance, make them appear older and causing the corners of the lip to sag.... This patient had been grinding for many years and had not realised how much damage he had done to his teeth. Using a combination of porcelain veneers and resin build-up, we have now strengthened his teeth, reducing the damage he will do to his enamel. If you have noticed that you wake up with pain in your jaw/teeth, you could likely be grinding in your sleep. Speak to your dentist to find out what solutions are there for you

19.01.2022 If you are looking to replace missing or damaged teeth, dental implants are an excellent option. They are the most natural looking restoration option, and unlike dentures, you don't remove them for cleanings, and you can still eat the foods you love. You brush dental implants as you would your natural teeth, chew food with them, and to the untrained eye, they appear to be the teeth you were born with. Dental implants are titanium roots that are implanted into your jawbone beneath your gums. Once in place, they provide a solid foundation to have a crown placed on the implant. The crown is specially made to look like your other teeth in size, shape and colour. What do you think of this case?

17.01.2022 Did you know an estimated 10% of adults, and up to 15% of children, grind their teeth at night, and most are unaware they're doing it? Several symptoms are commonly associated with bruxism, including hypersensitive teeth, aching jaw muscles, headaches, tooth wear, and damage to dental restorations (e.g. crowns and fillings).

17.01.2022 Did you know that certain lipsticks can make your teeth appear whiter? Check out what looks best and what to avoid

17.01.2022 Dental fluorosis is the appearance of faint white lines or spots on the teeth. This develops in the younger years of life, when children consume too much fluoride, from any source, over long periods when teeth are developing under the gums. Fluorosis isn’t a disease and doesn’t affect the health of your teeth, but can be a cosmetic concern. No matter how much you might brush and floss, the fluorosis stains do not go away. Thankfully, these spots can be very easily and beaut...ifully covered with porcelain veneers. Additionally, veneers don't stain and can help you achieve a straighter, whiter, brighter smile. 14.01.2022 Trauma or deep decay involving the nerve can cause a tooth to appear discoloured or darkened. Teeth that have had root canal treatment can also darken in appearance and be very noticeable in your smile. Thankfully, with porcelain veneers or crowns, this discolouration can be masked and appear as natural as your other teeth.

06.01.2022 Did you know the first design of braces was introduced in the 17th century? Pierre Fauchard was a dental pioneer of the 1700’s and his innovation paved the way for modern orthodontics. 'The Bandeau,' as Pierre called it, was an iron device shaped like a horseshoe, designed to expand the upper arch. It was fixed to the teeth using silk thread or waxed linens. In 1754, Louis Bourdet perfected the process by implementing the extraction of teeth as a treatment to prevent overcrow...ding. The 1800’s brought many orthodontic advances, including J.S Gunnels invention of headgear in 1822, that could straighten teeth from the outside. At this stage braces were taking years to correct the misalignment of teeth and the experience was considered 'excruciating.' In 1970 orthodontic treatment had a major breakthrough! Instead of individually wrapping each tooth with a metal band, adhesives were discovered, allowing dentists to bond brackets onto the teeth. Stainless steel was also now available and was a much more flexible material to work with, in comparison to iron, wood, ivory and gold that had also been used over the centuries. With the modern invention of clear aligners, traditional braces are becoming a thing of the past. This option has elimated a lot of discomfort and aesthetic concerns, and is considerably cheaper than braces, allowing more people to have this option accessible to them. Additionally, as they are removable, it allows the patient to maintain good oral hygiene. Aligners work by using carefully calibrated force to move your teeth into a new position. At the start of a patient's journey, they will be able to watch a 3D video showing them how each set of aligners will move the teeth, allowing the patient to visually see the results before committing. Unlike traditional braces that are typically worn for two years, clear aligners may take as little as 6 months.

04.01.2022 Is it really that important to brush your teeth? Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day isn’t a meaningless mantra from the dental community it’s essential medical advice! Just by brushing and flossing twice a day, you can prevent almost all gum disease. Doing so thereby also helps prevent more severe complications and more complicated medical procedures, like root canals. Brushing your teeth also helps prevent tooth decay. Teeth that aren’t cleaned regularly will bec...ome home to many bacteria that start to eat the tooth away. In mild cases, this can result in the need for fillings. In more advanced cases, crowns, inlays, or onlays may be needed to partially restore a tooth. All of these conditions require expensive, time-consuming processes and procedures to fix. Meanwhile, brushing and flossing your teeth costs a few dollars a month. What would you prefer?

02.01.2022 According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, 42% of children who are ages 2 to 11 develop a cavity in their baby (primary) teeth. Caring for your child's teeth is so important.

01.01.2022 What Causes Crow's Feet? Your facial skin stretches like a rubber band due to its elasticity. But, as you age, your skin loses this elasticity, causing certain body parts to start drooping and wrinkles begin forming. A primary reason for this is that our bodies' production of elastin and collagen lessens with age. Repeated muscle contractions from squinting, raising eyebrows or frowning cause your skin to fold and furrow, gradually leading to facial lines.... Although UV exposure and age play a key role in the formation of these lines, crow's feet can occur at any age. Unlike other wrinkles, crow's feet actually can show up in your mid-twenties; even earlier in some individuals who don't engage in good skincare. But either way, they're unavoidable. Thankfully, we have BOTOX. The Botox injections stop nerve signals from getting to the muscles, thereby causing them to contract less often. When using Botox for crows feet, it relaxes the muscles that surround the corners of your eyes, smoothing your skin out. This treatment is relatively pain-free (if not a very minor sting) and only takes 10 minutes! If you want to find out more, book online or call 3708 7272 for a complimentary consultation with Dr Luma
