24.01.2022 We are giving the brightest minds in Victoria the funding and support they need to make discoveries and breakthroughs that change lives, save lives and drive the future of Victoria’s economy. Recently the Premier, together with Minister Pulford (Innovation, Medical Research and the Digital Economy) announced a landmark $2 billion for the Breakthrough Victoria Fund to ensure Victoria remains at the forefront of research and innovation. This is an investment that delivers certa...inty for industry and will create a pipeline of more than 15,700 jobs. Their advanced robotic high-throughput screening is helping fast-track the discovery of new medicines and discover more effective treatments for a range of conditions. It’s just one example of the world-class research being done right here in Melbourne and as Victoria recovers from the pandemic and rebuilds its economy, the Labor Government is driving further investment in our research and development sector. Victoria’s medical research sector supports more than 30,000 jobs across institutes, universities and industry, with more than 40 per cent of Australian-based biotechnology and medical technology companies calling Melbourne home. The establishment of the Breakthrough Victoria Fund complements the $210 million boost to medical research and new Australian Institute for Infectious Disease which also received funding in this year’s Budget. #vicbudget

23.01.2022 Latest update from the Premier's press conference.

23.01.2022 Today we wore orange at Parliament in honour of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. I'm proud that as a government, we are committed to progressing gender equality and ending violence against women. During this year’s 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, we are asking Victorians to talk about what respect and equality looks like at home, in relationships, in families, in workplaces and in public.... We must all #CallItOut when we see disrespect.

23.01.2022 I felt really lucky to get outside yesterday for a run along the Maribyrnong river. See the sparkle on the water? Love our community. Love where I live. I hope you've been getting some outside time too.

21.01.2022 I'm really pleased to let you know that the Sole Trader Support Fund is now open for applications as part of the Victorian Governments $3 billion Business Resilience Package. The program will provide vital funding grants of $3,000 to eligible Victorian non-employing businesses that must stay closed or operate under restrictions until COVID Normal. This support is targeted to sole traders who continue to incur these overheads while their operations remain subject to restrictions. 21.01.2022 Hon. Danny Pearson MP, Member for Essendon, Parliament of Victoria - November 26, 2020. Speaker, I rise to speak of the tragic conflict occurring in Ethiopia and express my wish for peace.... A battle is being fought between rival military forces in Tigray in Ethiopia’s north. This battle has set in train a mass exodus and a humanitarian crisis on a devastating scale. Speaker, my electorate of Essendon is home to many of Ethiopian background. It matters to them that I can speak these words in this place. It’s one small way I can offer my support. My Ethiopian constituents are glued for hours to their screens to try to glean any scrap of news about loved ones caught up in the crisis. We forget sometimes, in this country, how fortunate we are not to face these kinds of conflicts. But we must not ever forget. Speaker, I quote here from an Age article to tell you just how desperate the Tigray situation is as its citizens make impossible choices. The women were midway through their labour when the hospital director came in and told Mihret Glahif she had to run for her life. It didn't matter that her patients were giving birth, the staff had to leave immediately. The civil war had arrived, and it was knocking on the door. We heard gunshots and bombs," the 25-year-old nurse said. "We left all of the patients. Some of them were injured soldiers, some of them were women in labour. We left everyone." Speaker, there are reports emerging of bombings, beatings, machete massacres, even ethnic cleansing. Ethiopia is on the brink and experts point to the country being in a pre-genocide phase. To my Ethiopian constituents many who have arrived in Victoria as refugees, I send my support and my sincere wish for peace.

21.01.2022 Keep going Melbourne. Keep going.

18.01.2022 I was at the iconic Espy in St Kilda today with my friend Martin Foley MP, the Member for Albert Park, Ella Hooper and Isaiah Firebrace to announce more financial support for artists and live music venues. The Andrews Labor Government is supporting music venues, musicians, businesses and workers to continue their road to recovery from a tough 2020 sharing new music and live performances with audiences across the state. More than 130 Victorian music businesses, artists and ...venues will share in grants totalling around $3 million, supporting nearly 5,000 jobs in the industry as part of the Victorian Music Industry Recovery Program. Some 68 music venues are being supported to recover and rebound with nearly $5 million injected into Victoria’s iconic live music venues, as part of the final tranche of the Victorian Live Music Venues Program. We’re helping musicians and artists get back to doing what they love.

17.01.2022 A proposed reduction in the Victorian Default Offer for 2021 could see a drop in yearly electricity bills of 9% for Victorian small businesses and 7% for households. Thats $575 a year for small business and $105 a year for households. This follows the Andrews Labor Government introducing the Victorian Default Offer in 2019, to give customers fairer deals on energy bills on 1 July 2019. The VDO is one of the biggest reforms to the energy sector in over a decade. 16.01.2022 Loved this piece in the paper last weekend about acts of kindness during the pandemic. Kindness matters, but never has it mattered more than it has during 2020. I've heard lots of stories about kind and caring things people have done for others across our community during the challenges of lockdown and restrictions. Thank you. Special shoutout to the Essendon Good Karma Network, the Ascot Vale Good Karma Network and the Ascot Vale Little Free Pantry for the cheer and support they have been spreading around the neighbourhood.

15.01.2022 How good is this news? Passengers along the Craigieburn line will have access to a train every 10 minutes at the busiest times of day, with a redesigned timetable to take effect from early next year as Victorians get back onto the public transport network. Today details of the Victorian Government’s new train timetables were announced, which will see 30 new services a week added to the Craigieburn line from 31 January 2021 including 10 during the busy morning and afternoon ...periods. These extra train services for the line come on top of the 10 extra services the Government added in July to help people stagger their travel giving passengers more space on trains and platforms, making it easier to practise good physical distancing. To make it easier for metropolitan passengers to travel during quieter times and physically distance as Victoria recovers from the coronavirus pandemic, off-peak fares will be discounted for three months. From 31 January 2021, anyone using myki money between 9.30am and 4pm or after 7pm on weekdays will receive a 30 per cent discount.

15.01.2022 Absolutely delighted to announce this afternoon that members of Moonee Ponds Rate Levy Association (Moonee Ponds 3039), Union Road Traders Association and Flemington Chamber of Commerce will benefit from grants awarded through the Andrews Labor Government’s Grants for Business Chambers and Trader Groups program. The funding will help chambers and trader groups to provide critical advice, connections and resources to businesses across the Essendon throughout their members’ tra...nsition to COVID Normal. Grant recipients will use the funding for business activation initiatives like facilitating members’ adaptation to COVID Normal, ‘buy local’ campaigns and improving access to programs and services focused on resilience and recovery. The Grants for Business Chambers and Trader Groups program is part of more than $7 billion in direct economic support provided by the Labor Government to Victorian businesses and workers to help them weather the storm of the pandemic.

15.01.2022 It’s been a very busy week so far. Budget week always is! But this week in my (newish) role as Assistant Treasurer it's been especially so. I want you to know that the Andrews Labor Government is putting Victoria’s greatest asset at the centre of its economic recovery its people. The global pandemic has shaken economies right around the world Victoria included. But our success in driving down cases means that we are in a strong position to rebuild, recover and grow.... As we do, every Victorian in every suburb, region and rural community will be at the heart of our recovery with our success measured not only by the wealth of our economy but also the wellbeing of our people. The centrepiece of the Victorian Budget 2020/21 is the Jobs Plan, which sets an ambitious target to create 400,000 jobs by 2025, and half of those by 2022 because we understand a job means certainty and security for workers and their families. Our Jobs Plan will help drive our economic recovery helping businesses big and small create jobs across the state, while using the power of our projects to get more Victorians back into work. #economy #people #jobs #security #vicbudget #springst

14.01.2022 Because all young people should have the opportunities that work for them, we're overhauling Victoria’s school-based vocational education with a new integrated end-of-school certificate ensuring wherever they go to school, every student will be able to do both academic and vocational subjects. This week's Victorian Budget 2020/21 invests $38 million to develop a new single VCE integrated senior secondary certificate meaning students no longer have to choose between doing VCE or VCAL and fund new Jobs, Skills and Pathways Coordinators in government secondary schools. Great news for all students and an incredibly worthy pathway forward.

14.01.2022 Its Friday evening in Washington DC. On the steps of the US Supreme Court, the crowds gathered are singing Amazing Grace to honour the life and work of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. As a person who cares deeply about equality and as the dad of three daughters, I will always be grateful for the formidable leadership of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the stunning legacy she leaves for us. Im proud too, to be part of a Labor government ministry which has a majority of women. But theres mor...e to be done, and RBG will remain a great motivator and inspiration for this work. Vale.

14.01.2022 30. Happy Sunday.

13.01.2022 Yesterday I visited the NGV with the Premier. NGV is proudly one of the world’s leading art galleries. Creativity and the arts is in our Victorian DNA - central to our way of life, reputation, liveability and economy. I’m really excited to let you know that Stage 1 of the Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation project was fully funded at $1.4billion in Tuesday’s #vicbudget ... A landmark new Gallery NGV Contemporary will be built behind the existing NGV on Southbank Boulevard, amidst a new 18,000 square-metre public garden in the heart of Melbourne Arts Precinct. NGV Contemporary will take NGV into the next realm among stunning galleries across the globe. At least 5000 construction sector jobs from this project will help drive Victoria’s economic recovery and another 200 ongoing roles for NGV Contemporary will come into the job market. There will be tourism jobs, and economic flow on effects across the state. This is the biggest cultural infrastructure project in Australia, happening right here in Victoria. This project will permanently cement Victoria’s reputation as the nation’s cultural capital and I can’t wait for it to come to life.

12.01.2022 Great to chat all things Flemington Community Centre / Hub last week at an update with the City of Moonee Valley and my friend and colleague Ingrid Stitt MP, Member of the Legislative Council for the Western Metropolitan Region. The Andrews Government is investing $5million toward the Flemington Hub and Debneys Park project. The project will deliver much needed community, sporting and recreation facilities to a community who cant wait to have them. There are wonderful times ahead for the Flemington community and surrounds.

12.01.2022 This is important. Public drunkenness will be decriminalised in Victoria. We need to focus on support and safety, not punishment. The current laws have devastated too many families and left too many vulnerable people without the care they need. ... We will keep working with Aboriginal communities, health and other experts to make sure that we develop the best possible health model. A model that ensures our response to public drunkenness is safe, supportive and based on a person’s health.

11.01.2022 This weekend, the Jewish community celebrates Rosh Hashanah and the start of the High Holy Days. Rosh Hashanah will take place from sunset last night to sunset this Sunday, and marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year. While the New Year looks different this year, households will celebrate virtually with their families, with prayers, personal reflection, and apples dipped in honey.... To all Jewish Victorians, I wish you a wonderful, and sweet, New Year. Shana Tova from my family to yours.

08.01.2022 An update on masks From 11:59pm on Sunday, 17 January, rules around mandatory mask wearing will revert to the settings that were in place at Christmas time. This means that masks will now only be mandatory on all domestic flights, at airports, in hospitals, on public transport, in commercial passenger vehicles, at supermarkets and other large indoor retail locations, including shopping centres.... It’s also recommended that Victorians wear a mask in other situations if physical distancing is not possible. Victorians have made an amazing effort in getting tested and we continue to urge everyone, if you have any symptoms at all, please get tested and then stay home until you get your result. #proudofyouall #StaySafeStayOpen

07.01.2022 On 19 February 1942, the bombing of Darwin forever shaped and changed the chief port of the Northern Territory. Up until then, combat hadn’t occurred on Australian soil during WWII. But on that day, war came to Australia's shores. Seventy-nine years ago today, the Imperial Japanese Navy began the first of at least 64 air raids on the top end of Australia, which continued for 18 months, killing more than 230 service personnel and civilians and left countless others injured. Th...e bombings destroyed the wharf and ships in the harbour, causing a significant toll on Darwin's buildings and infrastructure. After Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour on 7 December 1941, there was a growing realisation that a Japanese attack on Darwin was imminent. Prime Minister Robert Menzies' War Cabinet ordered over 2,000 women and children to be evacuated from the region by air, road and sea. The final evacuation aircraft left Darwin just one day before the first Japanese air raid. As the first bombs fell, Australian troops ran to defend. It wasn’t just men who contributed to the war effort in the north. Large numbers of army nurses and enlisted women served in military hospitals and camps throughout the Territory. Hundreds of Indigenous women provided crucial labour at army installations during the war. Often called 'Australia's Pearl Harbour,' the bombing of Darwin was a defining moment in Australia's history. It showed the tenacity and courage of those who fought in the Second World War, and united Australians together as they gathered in the aftermath to rebuild. We honour and commemorate those who courageously defended the country during this time, who selflessly helped others, who suffered through the aftermath and those whose lives were lost.

03.01.2022 The local community of Essendon is home to many Qantas employees. Air crew, pilots, ground staff and many more. I wrote to the CEO of Qantas, Alan Joyce, urging him to reconsider the premature decision to sack over 6000 workers. We are going to need these vital workers when our skies are able to open up more widely.

03.01.2022 A message to everyone in the State District of Essendon. My Member Statement from Parliament last week.

03.01.2022 Acknowledging loss is so important. And so many experience the loss of a child in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. I really love this idea. A new commemorative certificate will provide greater recognition for Victorians who have experienced the tragic loss of a child in early pregnancy. 03.01.2022 Respect Victoria is an organisation dedicated to the primary prevention of all forms of family violence and violence against women. Their focus is on stopping violence before it starts, by changing the norms, practices and structures that allow it to happen. Respect Victoria has recently launched Connection Keeps Us Strong, a series of stories from Victorians who are navigating the pandemic together. The pandemic has led to significant challenges for all of us, but many famil...ies and households are working hard to stay connected, find the right balance at home, and lead with respect. Connection Keeps Us Strong showcases conversations between three different generations of Victorians, grandparents and grandkids, and a group of Dads who are making positive change in their homes. For the three Dads that Respect Victoria spoke with Stephen, Andrew and Bwe working from home has brought silver linings. They have been able to play a bigger role in the lives of their children and take steps to ensure that they are sharing housework and care work equally. Family violence is less likely to occur in households where gender equality is championed and relationships are underpinned by respect. Respect Victoria is doing such vital work. 01.01.2022 There's some warm weather ahead this weekend, and maybe a little rain. But don't let the rain stop you from getting out to some of the great playgrounds and parks in our community. Playgrounds have re-opened just in time for the school holidays. Enjoy the outside time. Here's a link to some of our favourites: https://www.mammaknowswest.com.au//cat/moonee+valley+parks
