20.01.2022 Back in the Sydney Flower Markets with another excited group of Certificate III students. Despite the early start they were full of questions! Learning about flowers is an important part of the Certificate III program as we want you to become the Flower Expert. A florist needs to know more about flowers than just their names. You will need to know their natural season, what colours they come in, how to care for them, where to store them, how long they last as cut flowers a...nd what designs they are suitable for. As an example, a bride sends you through an image of a bridal bouquet she would like you to use for inspiration for her wedding. An experienced florist would be able to identify the key flowers and foliage and know whether they are in season, what colours they come in, if they are suitable to use in that particular design and where to source them. If those flowers are not available, a florist could come up with a list of other blooms to use in the bouquet to create that same look and feel. 10.01.2022 HOW DO ALL THE ROSES BLOOM JUST IN TIME FOR VALENTINES DAY? AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE IMPACT OF THIS SEASONS CLIMATE EXTREMES? Over the past 50 years Pearsons has seen Valentines Day grow in popularity with a dozen sexy long stemmed roses remaining the most popular gift.... So do how our flower farmers get all the red roses to bloom just in time for Valentines Day? Its all to do with Timing and Sacrifice. Flower growers time the growth of the flowers, heavily cutting all the rose plants back in December and January, whether they are in bloom or not. They let the rose bushes re-grow and bloom all at once in time for Valentines Day. Effectively the growers sacrifice crops from late December through January to ensure they are in full bloom for February. Where do Pearsons roses come from? Pearsons source our roses both locally and internationally, road-testing different varieties before selecting the best roses for our Valentines bouquets. Many of our roses will be imported from South America or Kenya while the majority of our other cut flowers are Australian grown. 90%. Luckily for Pearsons customers we have over 50 years experience and strong relationships with our growers to ensure that we can provide beautiful roses on our busiest day of the year. Pearsons owner Bernard Pollak personally visits local farms on a regular basis to ensure our customers get the best quality available. Roses and the climate change The challenge has been so much greater this year with local flower growers struggling with hot temperatures and drought. One of Pearsons regular flower growers lost 90% in one glasshouse on Christmas Eve with temperatures soaring to 48.5C. Our longer summers and shorter winters are affecting harvesting and pruning timelines. This combined with rising water bills due to increasing water stress means more pressure than ever this year.
